The creation of the Unicef Society Oxford is part of the UNICEF OnCampus initiative launched by UNICEF UK in 2005.
As part of this initiative, a network of over 50 student societies have been set up all over the UK, each with the primary aim of raising awareness for UNICEF’s work and campaigns.
Although primarily charged with raising awareness, the society also looks to raise funds, given that UNICEF exists only through monetary donations. Moreover, our activities are not restricted to the scope of Oxford University, we have representatives at Oxford Brookes University and we have established links with local schools.

‘Remember that war started by a child?
Neither do we’
It is estimated that some 300,000 children – boys and girls under the age of 18 – are today involved in more than 30 conflicts worldwide. This week’s Series event looks at the involvement of child soldiers in armed conflict worldwide. How far is it possible to prevent children's participation in conflict, whether voluntary or involuntary? Is it possible to separate children from the social and political life of a country in conflict? Do children have a right to defend their communities and participate in the social life of the country? And even after they have laid down their weapons for good, what steps must we take to ensure their rehabilitation and reintegration into society?
Speakers include… Wayne Bleier, Programmes Director for War Child UK, an award winning charity that works with local partner organisations to protect marginalised children - street children, child soldiers and children in prison - in places that are acutely affected by conflict such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Northern Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ina Zharkevich has carried out research in Nepal, after the end of the Maoist insurgency. Her research suggests that the absence of any opportunities either for education, employment or migration, as it was in the internal areas of Nepal, can present a more interesting and prospective choice for 'children' and youth for growing up, often a more secure one, thus presenting a different case from many African conflicts.
Richard Willson from SOS Children’s Villages, which has provided a new family and home for more than 78,000 children across 124 countries. Mr. Willson will be talking about projects in Sudan and Uganda geared towards the care of ex-child soldiers following experiences in militia groups, enabling children to deal with the psychological trauma they have experienced.
This week's Series also sees the launch of the Series dinner, an opportunity for students to interact close up with the speakers of the evening's event! Join us before the Series, 6.15pm at Exeter's dining hall for a fascinating conversation with Toby Ord and Will Crouch over the moral case for giving more and giving effectively. Dinner per head costs £6.50 and includes free flow of wine. Email series@oxfordhub.org to book your place now!
