UCLU Friends of Medecins Sans Frontieres

You may have heard of Médecins Sans Frontières, the independent humanitarian medical aid organisation? (See http://www.msf.org.uk if you haven't!)

UCL FoMSF focuses on promoting awareness of, and fundraising for this charity. We were set up in 2006, and went on to become an official UCLU society in 2009.

We run various talks, film screenings and fundraising events throughout the year based around the theme of humanitarian medical aid, such as the annual Battle of the Bands, held in conjunction with the UCLU Live Music Society.

We also hold an 'electives forum' each year for students planning work placements in developing countries. Anyone is welcome at our events!

This year we have been involved with UCLU Darfur Week when we facilitated an MSF speaker event; raising money at ‘Dance for Change’; and the FoMSF Fun Run, and are keen to establish links with other societies and universities in the future. For the clinical students at UCL we organize a talk every year about electives and working abroad, and also host a speaker at the Careers’ Fair.

Furthermore, we have been keen to establish links with ‘Engineers Without Borders’ at UCL, which resulted in a successful evening of talks given by members of Article 25.

We were delighted to be given the UCLU Award for ‘Best New Society’ for our work this year!

THE HUMANITARIAN MEDICINE CONFERENCE

July 25th to 28th, Tel Aviv 2010

This July 25th-28th, an international conference on Humanitarian Medicine will be held in Tel Aviv, Israel and will be attended by dozens of students from around the world.

The HMC 2010 (Humanitarian Medicine Conference) offers students the rare opportunity to learn from the rich experiences of experts in their field. Top speakers will present a wide range of medical humanitarian aid activities through fascinating panels, lectures and tours and will present amongst others, military humanitarian missions to disaster stricken areas, unique techniques implemented into field medicine and cutting edge developments designed to improve medical care.

Ethical and moral issues arising while providing humanitarian aid during both times of conflict and crisis will also be discussed. The social events will provide students with the opportunity to meet and interact with their peers from around the world.

The conference is organized by a group of students from Tel Aviv University who take part in the StandWithUs Fellowship program, which empowers active students to become future leaders, in cooperation with the Tel Aviv University student union.

We would like to extend an invitation to attend the conference to prominent and influential young leaders as well as to medical students and students who are deeply involved in humanitarian aid activities. Hopefully the only thing you will need to pay for is the flight, and as Tel Aviv is now serviced by easyjet, this is not expensive.

Happy Easter!

E-mail newsletter sent by UCLU FoMSF, Tuesday 30th March 2010 @ 12:22pm

Hey everyone!

Thanks to all of you for supporting us this term – it’s been great to see so many of you at our events, and much appreciation goes out to those of you who have been helping out, volunteering and generally getting involved in our activities.

It's been a really busy year for us - we've had a number of speaker and film events including a talk held as part of One World Week; been involved with Battle of the Bands 2010 and Dance for Change where we hoped to have raised at least £500; taken part in the campaigning for Darfur Week where another £500 was raised... and best of all, organized the first collaborative FoMSF Fun Run!

On that note - a quick update on the Fun Run: photos have now been uploaded at http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/fomsfrun! Even more exciting is that the money raised from sponsorship has passed the £23,000 mark - and it's still going up! To donate, please visit http://www.justgiving.com/fomsfrun2010.

Lastly, a huge thank you to all of you for attending our talks and screening, for getting involved and for generally supporting us during the year. We hope you have enjoyed all of our events... and thanks to your help, we were awarded with the UCLU Award for Best New Society! We couldn't have done it without you, so thank you all again.

There will be lots more opportunities to get involved in next year, and if you’ve got any feedback or want to get involved more in organising events then please do email us at uclmsf@gmail.com!

Best wishes and happy revision from everyone at UCLU Friends of MSF!
