• TRASH XXVII Homebrew Competition

    Saturday, April 8th, 2017 at 8am - 5pm
Location: Helicon Brewing - 102 Union Ave, Oakdale, PA 15071

The 27th annual TRASH Homebrew Competition will be held on Saturday, April 8th, 2017 at Helicon Brewing in Oakdale.  The competition web site is live.  Judge and Steward registration is now open!  Entry registration opens on Thursday, February 23rd at 7:00 PM and closes on Friday, March 24th at 7:00 PM.

Please sign up to judge or steward here:

The competition is not open to the public - only those who have signed up to judge or steward should arrive at 8:00 AM.  A separate calander event and invitation will be sent out for the post-competition awards banquet, which will take place at Helicon during the evening of April 8th after judging concludes.

If you are interested in volunteering but have never been to a BJCP competition before and aren't sure what that entails, please sign up to steward.  No experience is required.  The job of a steward is to assist a pair of judges.  A steward's duties include fetching beers to be judged from the cooler, organizing score sheets after the judges have completed them, and soaking in the experience of a homebrew compeition.

A light breakfast of bagels, donuts, fruit, and coffee will be provided for all volunteers before the first round of judging, and lunch will be provided between the morning and afternoon rounds.

The competition is capped at 300 entries.  There is a 15 entry per brewer limit.  The entry fee is $7 per beer/cider/mead.  Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in every category, and there are major awards for Best of Show, Best low-abv beer, and the Turtle Creek Award - given to the brewer who amasses the most points (5 for gold, 3 for silver, 1 for bronze).  Full rules and details are available on the competition site.

As is always the case with the competition, we need help from everyone to pull this off.  It's a big endeavor, and we need the whole club to chip in to keep this longstanding tradition rolling.  Please save the date and sign up to judge or steward at trashcompetition.org.

  • TRASH XXVII Awards Presentation Ceremony

    Saturday, April 8th, 2017 at 7pm - 10pm
Location: Helicon Brewing - 102 Union Ave, Oakdale, PA 15071

Following the conclusion of judging and tallying of results from the TRASH XXVII Homebrew Competition, please join us at Helicon Brewing for a celebration as we announce the winners!  Medals and prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place of every flight as well as the winners of Best of Show, Runner-up Best of Show, and Turtle Creek Award presented by East End Brewing Company.  (Details of these awards are available on the competition web site.)  Prizes were donated by the competition's many sponsors.  Check out the list of sponsors here.

    * If you can't attend, your score sheets and medals will be returned to your bottle drop-off location (or mailed to you if you shipped your entries).  Prizes will not be mailed or dropped off; you must attend the awards banquet to recieve any prizes you might win.

The event is free to attend, but we need an accurate headcount for logistics reasons.  Please 'purchase' a free ticket here for yourself and all guests no later than Wednesday, April 5th.

A note to competition volunteers (judges and stewards): please let us know if you are staying for the awards ceremony after you are done judging/stewarding by 'purchasing' a free ticket here.

There will be no meal provided as part of the celebration this year.  There are several restaurants nearby that you can order take-out from to bring to to the event.  Moreover, Helicon is close to the Robinson / North Fayette area and its many dining options.  We suggest you and your crew grab dinner on your way to Helicon.

    Schedule of Events:

6:45 PM: Doors open for ceremony attendees to enter the judging area.  Buy yourself a Helicon beer, mingle a bit, and settle in for the awards.

7:00 PM: Brief TRASH club announcements.

7:15 PM: Awards presentation begins.  Good luck competitors!

8:00 PM: Awards presentation ends - but the party goes on!  Please stay for a while, buy some Helicon beer from the bar, and sort through the leftover competition entries.  The 2nd bottle of every non-1st-place beer - including silver-and-gold-medal-winning entries - is available to open, taste, share, take home with you, etc.  Grab your score sheets, hang out, and have a good time!

Score sheets will be made available to entrants at the conclusion of the awards presentation.
