Planting Promise runs businesses in Sierra Leone to support education projects. We believe successful business is the route to sustained and sustainable development, delivering efficiency, wealth and prosperity.
We run a free primary school in central Freetown with 298 students and an adult education project which teaches adults literacy, numeracy and vocational skills. We think of ourselves as a business, rather than a charity. Our businesses are intended to be socially beneficial in themselves, and provide employment as well as income both for Planting Promise and the individuals we support.
a. We farm 180 acres of land in Makeni, Bo and Moyamba Junction and Mile 91 of rice and cassava.
b. Processing: with our machine we process cassava into gari, starch, eba, foofoo and flour.
c. We run an internet café in central Freetown
d. Our staff provide affordable courses in ICT
e. Soap- and textile-making – this is an example of how our social and profitable intentions interact
f. Run as a vocational training scheme, our soap ‘Grace’ is sold to generate profit for the school as well as providing skills for the adults
This is a new and exciting project which challenges the status quo perceptions of international development, founded and run by Cambridge students.

Interested in International Development?
Planting Promise is an organisation, founded and run by Cambridge students,
dedicated to the development of education in Sierra Leone. Our aim is to do
this by bringing to the world's poorest country opportunities to initiate
self-run, self-supporting projects that offer real solutions to the
difficulties facing the country. It is our belief that real and lasting
development comes from below, from local projects that address specific
needs, rather than large international models. I went there this summer and
there are really exciting changes going on right now. The Planting Promise
International Primary School has been up and running for a year, educating
nearly 300 children. By night, this becomes an adult literacy school.
Self-supporting projects include agriculture, an internet cafe and a soap
making business.
From the UK, as well as coordinating the activities going on in Sierra
Leone, our primary role is fundraising. Last year this was fantastically
successful - through donations, funds and events in Cambridge Planting
Promise raised over £13,000 which has made a massive difference to the
school we support.
To find out more, come to our squash. We are all finalists and looking to
leave a lasting legacy in Cambridge so there are plenty of opportunities to
get involved and make a difference to this dynamic, young organisation.
