Dear members, Just a reminder that Lord Falconer is coming to speak this evening at 7pm. Lord Falconer is best known for his appointment as Lord Chancellor and as the first Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs. This shift in tradition was called for as the government argued that the position of a cabinet minister as a Judge and Head of the Judiciary was no longer appropriate and would not be upheld by the European Convention on Human Rights. Upon that reorganisation of power in early 2007, Lord Falconer became the first Secretary of State for Justice, while keeping the title and role of Lord Chancellor. Before becoming Lord Chancellor, Lord Falconer practised as a barrister and became a QC in 1991. He was created a Life Peer in 1997. In 1998 he became the Minister of State at the Cabinet Office, taking over responsibility for the Millennium Dome. Please arrive at 6:45pm for a 7pm start. Best wishes, Publicity Secretary Previous NewslettersELECTION RESULTS V&A BALL PHOTOS! LAW SOCIETY ELECTIONS TGM and ELECTIONS TODAY TGM 12PM LAW FAC TOMORROW Ball tomorrow!
