NOMINATIONS FOR COMMITTEE

Alexei Frank – University College
Fun-loving, outgoing and willing Univ Fresher, hoping to be able to contribute much to LawSoc next year. Have always enjoyed LawSoc events and want to help make them even bigger and better. People, I have nothing else to do – vote for me, please!

Ollie Troop - Wadham College
ENTHUSIASTIC, EXPERIENCED and FUN. Bar and Social Rep at Wadham. ORGANISED and MANAGED the Wadstock cocktail bar. Good at buying BUFFETS! Don’t be out of the loop, vote for TROOP.

David Dowling – Oriel College
Dowling. David Dowling. Oriel Theologian. Keen to work hard, ready to do the unpopular jobs. Writer for OxStu, founder of school paper – really eager to make sure that Verdict gets a good verdict. Work experience - UK Chambers; major international law firm (US). Want safe pair of hands? Vote Dowling!

Alice Fraser – Lady Margaret Hall
Enthusiastic and committed LMH lawyer who delights in general organising activity and would relish the chance to give something back to Law Soc. Reliable yet fun-loving and willing to dedicate lots of time to ensure Law Soc socials, presentations and moots run as smoothly, and are as enjoyable, as ever!

James Dobias – Merton College
I’d love to get involved in such an exciting society as I’m strongly interested in law and have lots of useful experience. Having run two societies, and been to lots of LawSoc socials and presentations, I’ve the organisational-skills, creativity and enthusiasm necessary to ensure events are highly successful and well-attended.

Sarah Burton – Hertford College
I would love to become part of the running of Law Soc which has provided me with so many fantastic events this year. I am a Hertford PPE-ist who has always been passionate about law. If elected I would be a committed, enthusiastic and reliable member of the committee.

Noor Ashraf - Mansfield College
It’s simple. I can bring enthusiasm, commitment, experience, reliability, organizational skills and most importantly the overwhelming drive to take the Oxford Law Society on to the next stage of truly spectacular events and stimulating career related opportunities. In turn I stand to gain from the amazing learning experience from working with a similarly dedicated group of individuals.

Dominic Rea – Lady Margaret Hall
More of what the people want - continue the impressive tradition of champagne and chocolates, wine tastings and spectacular balls for those who enjoy the finer side of law soc. More career related talks and networking opportunities for those with an eye on careers. Experience in events organisation as LMH VP.

Posted by Piers Taylor, Thursday 5th June @ 5:20pm

Secretary - CONTESTED

Piers Taylor:

As the Publicity Secretary I proved myself to be efficient and reliable.
I now wish to focus inwardly on the organisation of the committee and to
undertake the responsibility of Secretary.

I’ll endeavour to help next term’s Executive in any way possible to
ensure Michaelmas runs smoothly and effectively and will, as ever,
undertake ad-hoc tasks at short notice with enthusiasm.

It is my intention to exceed your expectations - let me prove my
dedication to the society by voting Piers for Secretary.

—-|—-|—-|—-|—-|—-|—-|—-|

Efe Ekhaese:

My time on the committee so far has been both enjoyable and rewarding, and based on my dedication and performance I feel that I would make a great candidate for secretary. I am organised and enthusiastic and feel that the role of secretary is one of the most important on the committee and needs an diligent and effective candidate such as myself. I do not feel that much change must occur in this position for next term, as such a great job has already been done, therefore I will place emphasis on maintaining this high standard for the committee.

Posted by Piers Taylor, Thursday 5th June @ 5:20pm

Treasurer - uncontested

Srijanee Bhattacharyya:
DEDICATED, EFFICIENT, FRIENDLY, HARDWORKING and ORGANISED: I hope to bring you an unforgettable Hilary Term as Treasurer.

Through my two terms on committee I have not lost my enthusiasm and passion for all things LawSoc  and I want to become more involved.

I am confident that I can ensure that the LawSoc’s finances means that the high standard that one  expects from all LawSoc events, whether they be the socials, moots or presentations, are maintained  and improved.

I will put in 100% effort and work closely with both exec and committee to achieve this.

Vote for me – Srijanee!

Posted by Piers Taylor, Thursday 5th June @ 5:20pm

Vice President - uncontested

Henry Stuart-Brown:
As Social Secretary I have appreciated the effort that goes into creating a great term. Law Soc has an extremely good formula, however, there is a need to keep the society fresh and ensure law firms and members remain interested in events. As VP I would like to bring more focus to debates and lectures, particularly from barristers, which would provide a fresh change from the tedium of 40 minute advertisements from city law firms. Socially I would look to continue the much-loved traditional events whilst building on the new ideas that have really brightened up the term card.

Posted by Piers Taylor, Thursday 5th June @ 5:20pm

PRESIDENT - uncontested

Dominic Barker:
Dear member,
I am Committed, having attended every presidents’ cocktails in the last 2 years, and only missing one C&C (due to it being full), but was so committed I went back to Tesco’s and bought my own cava and Twix. I have also attended Lawsoc events despite having less than 3 weeks before my finals. I have Experience, having been on the Wadham SU committee during both Wadstock and Queerbop, organizing things such as the ice-cream stall, have secured sponsorship for a private house party, and have good leadership and organizational skills, learnt from the OTC and my time as mooting secretary (thank you Jen…)

Vote Dom!

E-mail: Ball tickets information YOU ARE ON THE WAITING LIST

Thank you for your interest in the spare ball tickets. If you have received this message you are on the waiting list. DO NOT WRITE AND SEND THE CHEQUE - This is not an offer of a ticket. Here’s some info so you understand what’s going on:
The first few names from the waiting list have been offered tickets. These are the tickets of those who won the ballot but then told us they no longer wished to come. There weren’t too many of these.
BUT There is a larger number of tickets that are being held for people who haven’t got back to us at all after being offered them from the ballot. We have emailed these people and they have until 5PM tomorrow to let us know what they’re up to. After so much time to be in touch with us, it seems pretty likely that these people don’t want to come so you still have a good chance of being offered a ticket.
Tomorrow at 5 we will have the exact number of tickets going spare and will offer these to you sometime in the evening in the order you emailed us today. There aren’t many of you and there are a good number of these tickets on hold so you do have a good chance.
Hang in there for one more day, and thank you for your interest in the ball at such short notice.

Nominations for Officer Positions

Trinity Term

Secretary, Contested

Alice Free, St Catherine’s College

As a social secretary, I proved myself to be a keen volunteer and hard worker. I am now eager to take on the greater level of responsibility that the position of Secretary offers. The administrative tasks the role involves are crucial to the ongoing success of the society; organised and efficient, I would perform my secretarial duties diligently and effectively. With the utmost enthusiasm, I can guarantee an energetic and dynamic approach to the role. Capable of working well in a team, I know the committee could depend on me to act with complete dedication to the Law Society.

Jennifer Ashley, St Hilda’s College

I’ve loved my first term as social secretary, attending events religiously and learning to become an amazing buffet buyer! I hope to continue moving LawSoc forward and helping members of the society get as much out of it as I do.
I promise to bring enthusiasm to the role of secretary, efficiently taking minutes, organising rooms and making clear, fair rotas. I’m eager and ready to help anyone who needs it, whenever they need it.
I believe I am an organised , reliable and fun member of the committee, dedicated to LawSoc and great for the role of secretary.

Michaelmas Term

President Elect, Uncontested

Ryan Taylor, St Catherine’s College

Having served as Secretary for the committee, I am enthused and determined to contribute further to this already vibrant society. I see President as being the natural progression to match my organisational skills, reliability and commitment to Oxford law society. As a confident and out-going Yorkshireman I’ll endeavour to improve the quality of all society events with efficiency and professionalism; from creating new social events and sporting fixtures to maintaining excellent relationships with all sponsors (+ Marks & Spencers)!

Vice President Elect, Uncontested

Jamie Hill, Balliol College

I have plenty of experience of how the society functions after two terms on committee and feel I have developed the necessary skills to perform the role of vice-president successfully. I have been fully committed to the society during my time and having worked under two fantastic executives, I would relish the opportunity to input my own ideas. I want to revamp the membership so that all members receive our emails and are fully aware of upcoming events. Other ideas include a ‘members v sponsors’ sporting event and a traditional ‘ballroom’ location for the ball.

For a thrill, vote Hill!

Treasurer Elect, Uncontested

Agata Duda, Pembroke College

I would love to be given the opportunity to dedicate my boundless enthusiasm and hard work to the position of Treasurer…

-Many qualities and heaps of experience to bring to the role -Extensive involvement with fund raising during gap year and at Oxford -Always efficient and organised
-Proven dedication and passion for all things Lawsoc -Effective team player that combines imagination, drive and initiative -Enthusiastic to work with the President and VP to bring you the most memorable events of Michaelmas

Do the deed- vote for DUDA!

Committee Positions Trinity Term

Suzanne Ashman, Trinity College

I’m Suzanne, a 2nd year PPEist and new convert to Law Soc. I particularly want to help non-lawyers get involved with mooting. I’ve organised debating competitions before so I’ve had some experience doing this sort of thing. I’d make a good mooting secretary because I’m enthusiastic about mooting and organised.

Paul Eastham, St. John’s College

This passionate John’s lawyer has been inspired by the unique calibre of speakers and rejuvenated by the healing power of socials provided by Lawsoc to a grateful membership. A dedicated, committed student and sportsperson, I always give 110% and hope to bring that enthusiasm to a successful committee. Vote Paul!

Sam Churney, St. Catz

As an industrious, organised and dedicated person, I feel I would be a valuable contributor to the Committee. I have had experience in organising functions and dealing with marketing. It is important to develop the essence of Law-Soc using an innovative team in which I would play a productive role.

Simon Cassell, University College

Hard-working, dedicated and outgoing Univite in his second year seeks prestigious Oxford law society for fun and frolics. Regular attendee of LawSoc events and talks now wants to give something back. Hope to have as much fun organising as have had attending, and will ensure you have a great time.

Courtenay Watson, Hertford College

Want legendary events more spectacular, memorable and original than ever before?
Want it to be possible for more members to attend? Want more prestigious speakers and sponsors? With huge experience planning events, and as an enthusiastic, committed and hardworking person, give me the chance to contribute to LawSoc Committee.

Jaimie Li, Balliol

If elected, I will generate interest in Law Society events and deliver a formidable turnout to each one. I can relay information reliably and informatively due to my communication skills, promptness, and attention to detail. I have had prior experience publicizing OUSU campaigns through poster distribution, newspaper advertisements, and Facebook.

William Haig, New College

A first year Psychologist (no exams next term!), I am planning a career in the law. I have worked at Lovells and Clifford Chance and have experience running a society at school. I have attended and enjoyed many LawSoc events this year and I am keen to help organising them.

Efe Ekhaese, St. Catz

As a confident, enthusiastic and productive person I feel I would be a dynamic addition to the committee. Having regularly attended Law-Soc events I would relish the opportunity to help with these and enjoy the rewards that they bring. Vote Efe for a new dimension to this already successful society.

Piers Taylor, Exeter College

Reliable and friendly, with plenty of spare time to help out with law soc events and organisation (I don’t do sports). I promise to be dedicated and happy and will gladly put my organisational and other generally nerdy skills to good use on the committee. Please vote for me: PIERS!”

Henry Stewart-Brown, Merton

Henry Stewart-Brown, 2nd Year Biochemist at Merton. Previous experience running a School Science Society: inviting/organising weekly speakers along with other events. With an exam free summer I would love to organise events as a member of the committee. I am efficient and outgoing and have particular interests in patent law.

Josh Glancy, Balliol

Fun, outgoing, committed. Debating experience and keen amateur interest in the law. Lots of previous social-organisation experience – in charge school leavers ball, vice-captain of college rugby organising socials. Regularly attend law-soc events and really enjoyed social events – love chance to help organise them.

Don’t be a nancy, Vote for Glancy!

Chesca Lord, St. Hildas

I am a friendly, enthusiastic second-year historian aspiring to a career in law. In addition to Lawsoc social events, I have attended employer presentations and mooting events. I would be a valuable asset to the committee because I am hard-working, dedicated, work well in a team and am always smiling.

Sarah Tulip, Exeter College

Sarah Tulip … likes Law Soc so much more than Law because Law Soc: -Tests your capacity for alcohol - not case-law
- Gives you champagne and chocolates - not essays and Mods -Is about great social evenings - not 9am lectures Let me do more Law Soc and less law :)

David Thomas, Mansfield

Having organised more than 80 outdoor adventures, I’ll ensure that membership is an adventure.
I’ll help run socials, and career related events. I’ll build the reputation of the Society among the University by involving academics in mooting and exam skills talks. I wont forget the fun!”

Dear all,

Sorry for the late notice but Lord Falconer has been in touch to say he has been delayed getting to Oxford tonight. Therefore, his talk will begin at 7.30pm tonight rather than 7pm.

Venue: Lecture Room 4, New College.

Sorry again!
We hope to see lots of you there.

E-mail: TONIGHT: Lord Falconer, 7pm at New College

Dear members,

Just a reminder that Lord Falconer is coming to speak this evening at 7pm.
Venue: Lecture Room 6, New College.

Lord Falconer is best known for his appointment as Lord Chancellor and as the first Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs. This shift in tradition was called for as the government argued that the position of a cabinet minister as a Judge and Head of the Judiciary was no longer appropriate and would not be upheld by the European Convention on Human Rights.

Upon that reorganisation of power in early 2007, Lord Falconer became the first Secretary of State for Justice, while keeping the title and role of Lord Chancellor.

Before becoming Lord Chancellor, Lord Falconer practised as a barrister and became a QC in 1991. He was created a Life Peer in 1997. In 1998 he became the Minister of State at the Cabinet Office, taking over responsibility for the Millennium Dome.

Please arrive at 6:45pm for a 7pm start.

Best wishes,
