Hello HUMsters!

Hope your weekend has got off to a brilliant start! Just a reminder that our first event of the year is this Monday. We are hosting a Meet and Greet with lots of delicious food and chai of course!

It was also really lovely to meet some of you at our first Aarti this past Wednesday. Aarti takes place every Wednesday at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies so please do come along for the next one to get a feel for what it's all about!

Don't forget to scroll down for more info on both these events and also a couple of exciting notices

**Introducing your new HUMsoc Committee**

E-mail sent by Member 133d6af, Wednesday, 22nd January 2014 @ 8:24am

Hello Humsters!

Collections are over, Hilary Term has begun and we have all entered back into the crazy life of Oxford students. The beginning of this term also marks the start of your new HUMsoc committee! We would firstly like to thank last year's committee for all their enthusiasm, the excellent array of events they organised and for handing us a brilliant society. We will miss them all (and a particularly shout out to Adi's hilarious emails!) but fear not, we are determined to continue their hard work with all the enthusiasm that only HUMsters know how to bring.

We have a fantastic year of events planned; the annual extravaganzas of OxHoli (Trinity Term 2014) and the Diwali Ball (Michaelmas Term 2014) will be bigger and better than ever before! More details to follow later on...
We also have our weekly Aarti at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies (OCHS) and next Monday  we will be hosting our first Meet and Greet of the year! Bollywood film nights, curryhouse trips and some exciting new events are also being lined up so keep an eye out in future HUMsoc emails for more details.

With lots of HUMpyaar from your new committee:

Vaibhav, Akriti, Rhiya, Priya, Stuti, Devika, Devarshi, Sukanya and Rangarajan

**HUM** ONE LAST TIME

E-mail sent by Member 10a3dfd, Monday, 2nd December 2013 @ 4:03pm

Hello HUMpeeps,

As some of us come to an end of yet another Michaelmas and others (all you freshers) come to an end of what has hopefully been a smashing intro to the Oxford experience, the time of our committe (2013) also comes to an end. We thank each one of you who has shown us support in any way, and it goes without saying that we couldn't have put on half as good a Holi or Diwali Ball was it not for you guys!! Coupled with the sadness of one of the most amazing experiences of our lives coming to an end, there is also the excitement of introducing your new HUM committee 2014!!! Here goes:

President - Vaibhav Agarwal

Vice President - Akriti Nanda

Treasurer - Rhiya Pau

Secretary - Priya Shah

Events Coordinator - Stuti Johri

Sponsorship Coordinator - Sukanya Majumdar

Marketing Director - Abhay Soorya

Sewa Coordinator - Devika Chatwani

Religious Coordinator - Devarshi Lodhia

IT Officer - Rangarajan Ramesh

If you would like to meet your new committee and bid us a good farewell as we hand over the reins, there will be an end-of-term meal after the last weekly aarti of this term! So be at the OCHS (near Tesco on Magdelen Street) at 6:30 on Wednesday and keep yourselves free for a meal after!

Also, message from Ewan French: 'I have an exciting opportunity to present to you! Back home, I am the proud owner of a big, loud Dhol, and when I looked around Oxford to see whether there was a chance for me to play/practice in an ensemble, I was disappointed. I did however find Chris Hills (chrishills@btinternet.com), who is looking to set up a group to make a big... loud... group. Now I'm not sure what the numbers are out there that might be interested in it, so I thought I'd send this message out. Chris at the moment goes around schools and does workshops with children on the dhols that he has, and so obviously people interested wouldn't need one of their own, and could just show up and make some noise with other people, but hopefully we're going to get a nice group together and actually do some gigs and stuff! I personally am really excited about this opportunity, and if you'd like to get involved, in this new group, then please give Chris or I (ewan.french@lincoln.ox.ac.uk) a quick email and say you heard from me and we'll see about setting something up for Hilary term!'

Have an amazing Christmas and an even better New Year!!! Although some of you may be glad to know this is my last email (freedom from hashtags?), I will really miss it!

Remember, Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost.

LOTS OF HUMpyaar xxxx

Hey guys,

Sorry for yet another email (though we know you secretly love them), but we forgot to mention our plans for SEVA WEEK which takes place this week! We will be doing a variety of things during the week, so we would love for you to get involved in at least one thing, if not more. And if you're feeling very charitable, then come along to help every day! Seva will take place in the evening every day this week

Here is the itinerary for the week:

MONDAY We’ll all be ‘online mentors’ on Horse’s Mouth which is a social network where those with any type of problem from relationship to work pressures can ask for advice and anyone can offer word of wisdom. You don’t need any special experience; anyone who has lived and learned can offer pearls of advice!

TUESDAY We’ll give blood.

WEDNESDAY We’ll hold a collection at Aarti so bring along any old clothes /shoes /blankets/ imperishable food that you have lying around.

THURSDAY We will volunteer with the Oxford Food Bank to redistribute food all around Oxford to local charities (TBC).

FRIDAY We’ll be heading down to St Clements’ Family Centre where KEEN (a charity that helps young people with special needs in Oxford) hold their weekly KEEN Zig-Zag session for young children which involves lots of arts and crafts and KEEN teens after that where they’ll be lots of board and computer games.

If you would like to get involved in, please email Niloy (niloy.biswas@sjc.ox.ac.uk), letting him know what you'd like to do!

That's it for now - we hope to see lots of you getting involved! Let's show our #HUMspirit and do good for those less fortunate than us!

**HUM** REMINDER: COMMITTEE APPLICATIONS

E-mail sent by Suriya Prabhakar, Thursday, 21st November 2013 @ 5:34pm

Applications are OPEN for the 2014 committee positions (Hilary - Michaelmas) and will close on Saturday of 6th week (23rd Nov) at midnight! Attached is a document detailing the job descriptions for the various committee positions. If you would like to apply, please send a word document of around 100-200 words to me (suriya.prabhakar@seh.ox.ac.uk) or Aditya (aditya.jain@exeter.ox.ac.uk), stating what position you are applying for, why the position appeals to you, and why you think you are suited to the position. (Please include any past or relevant experience). Interviews will be held in 7th/8th week.

Being on the committee is such an enriching experience that allows you to take so much away, and we have no doubt that you will not regret applying. (In fact, you will regret not having been given the chance to be on the committee if you don't apply)! If you feel as passionate as we do about HUMSoc, then get those applications rolling in; and even if you don't, and simply think it might be something different to try out, you have just as much a chance to make it on to the committee! If you have any questions at all about any of the positions, please free to email any of us (names and colleges are on the attached file) and we will be happy to answer them! Good luck!

**HUM** DIWALI BALL FEVER!

E-mail sent by Suriya Prabhakar, Friday, 15th November 2013 @ 8:48pm

Hey all you lovely people,

Only one day left till the big event, and it's not too late for you to get your tickets! Below I have outlined the most important things you need to know about tomorrow.

**HUM**2 DAYS TILL DIWALI BALL

E-mail sent by Member 10a3dfd, Thursday, 14th November 2013 @ 11:30pm

Hello HUMmers,

GET PUMPED, JUST TWO DAYS LEFT! Couple of exciting things:

EXTENDED SPOT SALE TOMORROW from 11:30 to 4:30 at Starbucks on Cornmarket Street #bethereorbesquare! We only have a limited number of tickets available now so make sure you don't miss out!

Also, not giving much time to those of you guys wanting to do bank transfers but we can't account for any transfers made after midnight tonight (in the next half hour). Online tickets can only be bought by 10 PM tomorrow. Also, we won't be able to get you your ticket on time if you pidge a cheque now so it's too late for that as well! BUT, because we don't want anyone to miss out on this amazing night, we will be selling tickets at the door on the day of the Ball (from 6:30 to 8:00 pm) so make sure you get your's then!

It is also important for everyone who is attending to bring some form of a photo ID with you (bodcard will do) so that we can tally your name against your ticket number!

Lastly, we have struck up a deal with Royal Cars (01865778866): It will be 10 pound to Kassam stadium from city centre (same rate for the other way as well) on the day! You will just need to mention that you're going for Diwali Ball to the taxi driver! This can work out to be much cheaper than other options if you take a taxi with a bunch of other people living near you!

Remember guys, all proceeds go to charity! Plus, bound to be a crazy night!!! There's no reason you shouldn't be there #letslightitup

See you there!!!

**HUM** BACKUP DANCERS FOR ARJUN WANTED

E-mail sent by Suriya Prabhakar, Saturday, 9th November 2013 @ 7:09pm

Hey guys,

We understand that this is short notice but we have an amazing opportunity open to you! If you are interested in gaining a great deal of recognition by performing as a backup dancer for Arjun for 2-3 of his songs at the Oxford Diwali Ball (16/11/13), and are willing to put in enough rehearsal time in this final week, please get in touch with me asap (suriya.prabhakar@seh.ox.ac.uk). Ideally we'd like 2 or 4 dancers, so if you would like to get involved, even if it's just for 1/2 songs, then do let me know. Mp3 files and routines will be provided, so there won't be any choreography necessary and there's still enough time! Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Here are the links to the songs that you could perform to as a backup dancer:

1) RUN AWAY - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=285VO0GHFFg

2) CHAMMAK CHALLO RMX - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqR01iepgx4

3) TAKE IT BACK - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhLz9KF1SRs / CHAIYYA CHAIYYA RMX - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9D89IiJmAjk

This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity to perform for the award-winning UK Asian R&B artist ARJUN! So do consider it and let me know asap if you're interested!
