**HUM: Amendment to the last email**

E-mail sent by Amrita Dasgupta, Tuesday, 24th February 2015 @ 2:01pm

Hiya HUMstars,

Apologies for spamming your inboxes with more than one email a week. Anyways, yesterday's email had a Facebook event link for the "Chai, Samosas and Educational Sewa" event on Tuesday 3rd March however due to technical difficulties we've had to make a new event on Facebook. The new link for the event is: https://www.facebook.com/events/949841195028994/

The details for the event remain the same. Do come along for some free samosas, snacks, chai and a great time with fellow HUMsters!

E-mail sent by Amrita Dasgupta, Monday, 23rd February 2015 @ 11:42pm

Hiya HUMstars (in keeping with the Oscar buzz),

I hope that at least some of you are enjoying watching the Cricket World Cup as much as I am! If not that then maybe the Oscars last night? In any case there are plenty of exciting things going on this week like the Bollywood Bop, Mastana and Talam! As usual we will also be holding our weekly aarti on Wednesday and Hindi lesson on Thursday. Scroll down for the details!

P.S. You know the drill!

A casket with no hinges or lid, yet inside a golden treasure is hid. What am I?

**HUM: Hilary Week 5**

E-mail sent by Amrita Dasgupta, Tuesday, 17th February 2015 @ 12:16am

Hello HUMans (see what I did there?),

A belated Happy Valentine's Day to all our lovely members! The start of fifth week marks the arrival of the infamous fifth week blues. I hope my cheery emails manage to dispel some of those blues! Join us at our weekly aarti to brighten up your week and escape the notorious fifth week blues with your fellow HUMsters. There are plenty of exciting events being held during the next two weeks, so scroll down to read about all of them!

HUMpyaar xxx

P.S. As usual here's your weekly riddle!

Two sons and two fathers go fishing together in the same boat. They each catch one fish but the total catch for the day is three fish. How is this possible?

**HUM: Hilary Week 4**

E-mail sent by Amrita Dasgupta, Monday, 9th February 2015 @ 3:59pm

Dearest HUMaholics (because everyone loves HUM),

Time seems to be flying by here, I can't believe its fourth week already! I hope you enjoyed the snow last week; it seemed to make everything (as opposed to mostly the RadCam) in Oxford Instagram-worthy. There are plenty of events this week to entertain from fashion shows to our weekly aarti so come along and enjoy!

HUMpyaarxxx

P.S. Apparently the riddle from last week was too easy so to compensate here are three new ones! Don't forget to read all the notices before getting to the answers!

What loses its head in the morning and gets it back at night?

I have a head and a tail, what am I?

Name three consecutive days where none of the seven days of the week appear.

**HUM: Hilary Week 3**

Salutations HUMfolk (the old buildings here make me want to use archaic words),

It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Meet 'n' Greet last week! We hope you guys had as much fun as we did and if the lack of samosas left over were anything to judge by, then I'm sure you did! Do scroll down to read about the exciting events being organised both this week and later on in term.

HUMpyaar xxxx

P.S. Apparently some people liked the riddle at the end of the last email, so here's another one for all you riddle-lovers out there!

What starts with an 'e' but only has a single letter in it?

Scroll to the end for the answer!

**HUM: Hilary Week 2**

E-mail sent by Amrita Dasgupta, Sunday, 25th January 2015 @ 1:27pm

Hiya HUMsicles (given the chilly weather, I felt this was appropriate),

Hopefully the start of term hasn't been too hectic for all you wonderful people! I can't believe first week is already over, time really does fly here! We have a bunch of exciting events planned for this week such as our Meet 'n' Greet, weekly aarti and weekly Hindi lessons. Hope to see loads of you guys at these events! Do scroll down for the details!

HUMpyaaar xxxx

P.S. Just to ensure that you all actually do scroll through the email here's a riddle, the answer to which is at the end of the email!

What is the beginning of the end, the end of time, the middle of yesterday, and nowhere in tomorrow?

Dear all

With the end of Michaelmas fast approaching, the time has finally come for the 2014 HUM committee to send its final mail out.

We have had an incredible year holding weekly Aarti sessions, Meet & Greets, Bollywood film nights, a crazy OxHoli in May and the 2014 Oxford Diwali Ball. We are also proud to have raised a record breaking amount for charity! All proceeds from our events will go to Pratham UK and Food For Life Vrindavan to help them continue their fantastic work in alleviating poverty.

Of course, these events would not have been possible without all your support. Thank you!!

Although the HUM excitement in our lives is ending, we are delighted to welcome a new HUM committee to continue spreading HUM love throughout Oxford!

Presenting the 2015 HUM committee:

President - Srishti Suresh

Vice-President - Kiran Modi

Vice-President - Armand Rego

Treasurer - Henna Dattani

Secretary - Amrita Dasgupta

Events Co-ordinator - Ankita Saxena

Marketing Officer - Sashicumarr Thilakshann

Sponsorship Co-ordinator - Saloni Patel

Entertainment Co-ordinator - Tanay Joshi

Cultural Officer - Rehan Shah

We would like to wish the new committee the best of luck and hope that you continue to support them as well as you've supported us! If you would like a chance to meet the new committee, please do come to our final Aarti of 2014 on Wednesday. This will also be the final Aarti led by the 2014 HUM committee so it would be wonderful to see many of you there.

**HUM: Michaelmas Week 7**

E-mail sent by Member 133d6af, Tuesday, 25th November 2014 @ 1:34am

Dear all

Thank you to all those who attended Diwali Ball 2014 this year; with your support we will be able to help Pratham UK and Food For Life Vrindavan continue their fantastic work in alleviating poverty.

The committee worked incredibly hard on this year's ball and we have been humbled by the lovely comments received - thank you so much for your kind words and we are really glad that you enjoyed the ball.

However there are two points we would like to address. Firstly, the caterer struggled with the logistics and so the food queues became too long. This was not what we expected but for this we sincerely apologise. Secondly, the fire alarm. We are trying to understand what happened but we tried to minimise the impact by having Varsity Club open up to you early and agreeing with them to accept your drinks tokens. We're glad that a lot of you managed to have fun throughout the unexpected incident and 450 of you continued the night by marching on down to Varsity Club to have a good time! Most importantly, we are grateful for your co-operation and thankfully no one was hurt.

On balance we hope you all had a good time, we welcome any comments or criticisms and thank you for attending the Diwali Ball this year!

Dear all

Ahead of this week's main mail out which will include more details about how to purchase Diwali Ball tickets and other notices, we have a special message from Shaunaka Rishi, Director of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, about the Oxford Kirtan taking place this Sunday. Wishing you a very happy 1st week!

OXFORD KIRTAN

Dear Friends,

As the days end early, as the sky becomes grey, and as warmer clothes make their appearance again we have an opportunity to chant together in the warm cocoon of kirtan.

Our kirtan leader this month, Rangadevi hails from Gujarat, via London. She has been surrounded by kirtan her whole life and leads a lively and deep kirtan, as kirtan connoisseur might say. Rangadevi, among her many talents is also a yoga teacher.

This October's Kirtan will take place next Sunday, the 19th, from 4pm - 6pm, at the the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, Magdalen St, OX1 3AE (entrance between Jaegar and the Odeon cinema).

I look forward to your company and feel free to bring a friend, a family, a crowd, or even a college.

Warm regards,

Shaunaka

E-mail sent by Member 133d6af, Tuesday, 14th October 2014 @ 1:25am

Hello HUMsters old and new,

We hope you all had fabulous summers and are ready for HUM's biggest and best term of the year!

It was lovely to meet so many new people at the OUSU Freshers' Fair. For those who have recently signed up, here's a reminder of who we are and why HUM is such a great society to be part of.

HUMSoc is Oxford University's Hindu Society. Our aim is to promote and develop Hindu, and by extension Indian, traditions and culture throughout the university by holding a huge range of religious, social and cultural events.

A weekly Aarti is held on Wednesdays at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies (see below for details about the first aarti of term). The two big highlights of HUM's annual social calendar are OxHOLI, a massive colour-throwing festival that takes place in Trinity Term, and the renowned Diwali Ball which will be held on Friday 21st November, Friday of 6th week, so save the date!!

To kick things off, HUMSoc will hold our first Meet & Greet of the new year on Tuesday of 2nd week. There will be free Indian snacks, masala chai, and of course it's the perfect way to meet HUMmers, both freshers and non-freshers! More information below. You will also be able to purchase lifetime HUM membership for only £10 at this event.

HUMSoc is also delighted to be supporting St Anne's Diwali Week featuring a Diwali Concert, a classic Bollywood film night and a university wide pidge-a-diva service!

And finally, we are excited to announce that HUM are working in collaboration with the Cambridge University Cultural Hindu Society to organise a trip to Cambridge for their annual garba. The garba will be from 6.30-11pm on Saturday 1st November. If you are interested, then please let HUM know and more details will follow soon.

As a recap, here are the key HUM dates for your diary:

Weekly Aarti - Every Wednesday, Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, 6.30pm
First Meet & Greet - Tuesday of 2nd week, 21st October, 7 -9pm
OXFORD DIWALI BALL 2014 - Friday of 6th week, 21st November, Oxford Town Hall

Wishing you a wonderful year,

Your HUMSoc Committee 2014
