It's Week -2 of Michaelmas according to my Oxford radar, and we're nearly back! Summer is fading away, replaced by the cloudy skies, crisp breeze, and spiced apples of Autumn. The best part of that, though? Diwali Ball has been announced! Note down the date, folks, 25th November 2016, sure to be a night to remember for all. In addition, notices include a concert by the Fusion project at the Sheldonian Theatre, and an inter-University Bollywood singing competition.
Look out for us at Freshers' Fair and enjoy the rest of the vacation!
This summer, I discovered how great I am at multitasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at once.
RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN IS COMING TO OXFORD
The internationally renowned singer and nephew of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is sitting down to jam with our friends at The Fusion Project on the 12th of July. We know its outside term time but if you'd like the chance to listen to and even meet Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan then do get in touch with The Fusion Project! All you have to do is sign up to their mailing list at:
We wish everyone a fantastic Summer vacation!
-The HUM Committee

Answer to previous Riddle: a Candle! Well done to the various people that got this (particularly Amrita M!)

Riddle: My life can be measured in hours;
I serve by being devoured.
If thin, I am quick; if fat, I am slow.
Wind is my foe.
What am I?
Answer to Holiday Riddle: One person says whatever they get on the coin flip, whilst the other says the opposite of what they get 0_o
Hope everyone had a fantastic Holi yesterday! If, like me, you didn't manage to celebrate with colours, then don't fret, because we are just 50 days away from our very own Oxholi celebration on the 15th May (hopefully with much warmer weather...) In the meantime, be sure to listen to the Fusion Project's new song.
Holiday Riddle (no one has got this yet): 2 people are each given a coin and taken at gunpoint to 2 separate rooms. There, they flip the coin, and each person tries to guess whether the other person flipped heads or tails. If they both guess correctly, they are shot; otherwise, both are freed. Beforehand, they are allowed to meet and come up with a strategy.
There is a strategy that enables them both to survive 100% of the time. What is it?
For those of you still in Oxford, the OCHS is holding its annual Daffodil Kirtan - sure to be a wonderful evening next Sunday.
Hope everyone had fun in Hilary!

Answer to Week 7's riddle: the man was playing Monopoly. Well done to Shruthi M and Amrita D!
Nearly there! Hilary term is drawing to a close, but we've still got plenty of events for everyone. In addition to our weekly Arathi this Wednesday, we have the second of our Bollywood Film Nights on Thursday at Keble - this time watching the much more modern Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania! Last but not least, our friends over at the Oxford India Society are hosting one of their famed Bollywood Bops this Friday at Emporium from 10pm - be sure not to miss out.
Have a great week!
Riddle: A man pushes his car to a hotel and immediately realises he is bankrupt. Explain what happened.
Answer to last week's puzzle:
You can save every prisoner except the last, who has a 50/50 chance of survival. The best strategy is for each prisoner to count the number of red (or blue, but let's say red) hats in front of them. If the number is odd, they shout 'Blue'; if even, they shout 'Red'. This way, each person can deduce the colour of their own hat from what the person behind said and the number of red hats they can see, while continuing the pattern for the people ahead.
[No-one got this right :'( ]
3 weeks left! Let's make them count. This Thursday we'd like to invite you all to HUMSoc's inaugural Bollywood Film Night at Keble College - be sure to vote on your choice of film on the Facebook poll! As always, please come to the Aarti on Wednesday and invite everyone you know to Oxholi. It's gonna be great.
Have a fantastic week!
Logic Puzzle (email/FB message me solutions!):
100 prisoners stand in a line, each wearing a red or a blue hat. They can only see the colour of the hats of people in front of them - not their own or that of people behind. A prison guard walks from the back of the line and asks each prisoner in turn the colour of their own hat. If they answer correctly, they are pardoned, but if they get the answer wrong, they are executed. Before beginning, the prisoners are allowed to confer and come up with a strategy.
How many people can be saved guaranteed, and what is the tactic required to do so?
I hope you're not feeling those 5th week blues (because there are only 4 weeks of awesomeness left this term!) Oxholi Preparations are underway - please keep inviting friends and check 'Going' on FB - and, in addition to our weekly Aarti, the OCHS will be running another of its famed Gita Classes next Monday (22nd)! Finally, we'd like to invite people to the LSE Student Union's India Forum - more details below.
Best wishes everyone,
Answer to last week's riddle: a ton! (Well done Raghav T, Amrita D, Sai P, and Archith K. Bad luck Amrita M. I can only accept your first answer ^_^ .)
