**HUM** Chutney and Chips!

E-mail sent by Jamie Patel, Tuesday, 1st February 2011 @ 10:05am

Chutney and Chips is Oxford's FIRST multi-cultural, dances, beautiful costumes and a unique storyline crossing cultures. Cambridge, LSE, KCL and UCL already have them, and it is time to show everyone what Oxford has to offer!

Our bid to the Oxford Playhouse was successful, but now the hard part starts: actually putting the show on stage. Whether as an actor, dancer or as part of the many teams behind the scenes, we need YOU to get involved.

For those of you wanting to audition for parts, here is a brief synopsis of the play:

Chutney and Chips is essentially a modern Western take on a proverbial Bollywood love story. The production tells the tale of a simple and honest girl from London, who is constantly battling a desire to break free from the confines of her prescriptive lifestyle, whilst simultaneously trying to stay respectful to her deep-rooted cultural beliefs. At the same time, we learn about the story of an outgoing and charismatic boy studying at Oxford, eager to make the most of his degree and university life, but under pressure by his parents to find a wife.

At its very heart, the play sends out a message about the struggle posed to British-born ethnic individuals in maintaining the duality of cultures. However, ultimately, it is a celebration of the symbiosis of cultures and therefore it is a play for everyone. As a result, we welcome ANYONE that would like to audition and this is reflected in our diverse cast list.

Please look at the attachment for a breakdown of character profiles - see bottom of the email.

First auditions dates and times (these are the last set of first auditions, so please ensure that you can make them if you would like to have a chance of acting in the show):

Thursday 3rd February: 6.30pm-8.30pm
Saturday 5th February: 12pm-2pm

Second auditions dates and times:

Saturday 5th February: 4pm-6pm
Sunday 6th February: 12pm-2pm

Venue: New College- Lecture room 6

Please email Nikita Thakrar at and state which day you wish to attend. We will e-mail you back with further information on the audition format.

If you would like to get involved in any of the positions outlined below, please e-mail Nikita Thakrar with a maximum of 250 words, outlining why you are applying for the position, including any previous experience and anything else you feel is relevant. The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday 4th February (end of this week) and we may ask to meet you on Sunday 6th February after 2pm at New College.

Positions available:

-Designers: Will be required to create the posters, leaflets and website for the show. We are looking for people who have had experience in designing such things in the past and have excellent computer skills.
-Publicity team: Amongst other tasks, will be required to organise the press campaign for the show, contact any celebrities to make an appearance in the show and get a licence for a street performance on Cornmarket Street.
-Marketing team: Amongst other tasks, will be in charge of selling tickets, distributing flyers and posters, recruiting college reps, organising the launch party and arranging the content of programmes.

We are looking for someone who has had previous experience in creating websites. The website is extremely important for sponsors of the show as well as for publicity purposes.

Will be required to seek sponsorship from a variety of sources (using sponsorship packages that have already been made) and correspond with sponsors after sponsorship has been secured. You will work alongside the design team in order to ensure that logos/information about sponsors are displayed on the correct medium.

The Production Manager is responsible for overseeing backstage departments and all aspects of production. He or she must liaise with the other members of the production team and ensure the smooth running of the technical team.

We are looking for a team to create the sets for the show. Your artistic abilities will enable you to create backdrops and props of the highest quality.

We are looking for a team to help create amazing costumes for the cast of the show. You will understand the characters, having been briefed by the director and having attended rehearsals, and will then decide on the wardrobe for the entire cast. If you have created costumes in the past, this may be useful.

Hope to hear from you soon!
