REFUGEE WEEK 2008 - June 14th-June 21st

Different Pasts, Shared Future

This Refugee week several groups across Oxford including Student Action for Refugees, Asylum Welcome and Actors for Human Rights have got together to organise a whole range of events right on your doorstep, everything from entertainment, art and culture, to educational activities and a Town Hall meeting. 1.    Play: Asylum Monologues

When: Sat 14th of June, 7pm

Where: The Gardeners Arms, on Plantation Road, Jericho

Cost: Free entry All welcome

A wonderful and thought-provoking production, this moving series of monologues gives first hand accounts of the UK's asylum system in the words of people who have experienced it. A unique performance with live musical accompaniment.

2.    Film: The Art of Flight

When: Sunday 15th of June, 1pm

Where: The Ultimate Picture Palace, on Cowley Road

Cost: £3.00

A guerrilla documentary shot in Egypt on camcorders, this extraordinary film documents the plight of Sudanese refugees trying to leave Egypt where they have taken refuge.

3.    Town Hall Meeting: How We Treat Those Seeking Sanctuary in the UK

When: Monday 16th of June, 7pm to 9.30pm

Where: Oxford Town Hall

Cost: Free- All Welcome

Keynote speaker Tariq Ali

4.    Community event: Refugee Week Jamboree: Celebrating Sanctuary

When: Saturday 21st of June, 2-5pm

Where: Mary Magdalen Church, bottom of Cornmarket Street, just opposite Debenhams.

(Entertainment and speakers on Cornmarket from 2 to 3pm)

Music, art and crafts, stalls, cakes, free henna and face painting...Come along to find out more!
