E-mail: [Oxford Hub] ISRAEL AND PALESTINE; COMMITTEE POSITIONS; JOBS
|
Dear Oxford Hub member, Term is racing by, but there are still plenty of interesting events and opportunities arriving in my inbox. Upcoming highlights: - The Oxford Hub Series event this week is hosted by Christian Aid and takes a look at the human cost of the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
- Keep Saturday 31st free for fun in the sun at the Oxford Hub Garden Party - our termly social where we bring the whole of Oxford's charitable together. Krispy Kremes, Giant Twister and Mr Whippy ice cream will be on offer, as well as the presence of all of Oxford lovely charity people. Full details later in the week.
- The Pick of the Environment and Development Studies events this week look especially interesting.
- Don't miss out on applying for one of the many interesting committee positions on offer. Look out as well next Sunday for Oxford Hub and OxFID committee positions, as well as more internship opportunities for the summer.
Finally, there's no news summary this week I'm afraid, as Natasha is away. But there is a Call to Action to give you something to do about tackling problems in the fashion industry's supply chain. Also, if you're considering making a donation to the Burma-Myanmar appeal, consider the below recommendation we've had through from a Burmese student. Have a good week, Adam |

1. Oxford Hub Series - CHRISTIAN AID: ISRAEL AND THE OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES, THE HUMAN COST OF CONFLICTWednesday 5th Week (21st May), 8pm, Magdalen Auditorium The media is awash with stories about the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. Whether it is hopeful news about peace negotiations or horror stories about violence this is one of the most comprehensively covered conflicts in the world. And yet we very rarely hear the stories of the human cost of the Occupation. Nigel Varndell of Christian Aid's Advocacy and Policy Group for the Palestinians and Israel will explain what life is like ordinary Palestinians under occupation and what Christian Aid is doing to help. |

4. Jacari Committee Needs YOU!The window for applications to the Jacari committee has been extended to midnight 6th June - this is a great opportunity to get involved in a student charity next year, as well as pick up some fantastic experience and have a lot of fun. Jacari matches up children who have English as an additional language with volunteers who give them private tuition on a weekly basis - this has an enormous impact on children's language skills and confidence in the classroom and gives students the opportunity to interact with the Oxford beyond the university. Next year will be very exciting for Jacari - for the first time we will have a full-time staff member, a recent graduate and Jacari Committee veteran, and this means there's real scope to expand and develop the charity. Committee members will be responsible for coming up with innovate and creative ideas to promote Jacari, raise funds and expand the volunteer base, as well as for putting on events teaching workshops and seminars. The roles on offer are detailed in the attachment - please submit a CV with relevant experience and motivation for applying (no more than 1 A4 side) to president@jacari.org, and leave some time free on Sunday 8th June for a short interview. Don't miss out on the opportunity to do something amazing next year! |

9. Oxford Students for Liberty: BATTLE OF THE ALLITERATIVE DISCUSSION GROUPSTONIGHT at 8.30pm in the Union R&R (Rum and Rights) will be taking on P&P (Port and Policy). The motion being discussed will be: "This house believes that a stronger state is not the answer to terrorism in Britain" Is increasing the power of state necessary to ensure our safety and future liberty? Or will it simply erode our values without making us any safer? And even if it does make us safer, would it be worth it? Is there a balance that can be struck between the two? By undermining our own liberty in the name of security are we in fact just making a mockery of our own ideology and making the job of the terrorist easier? Or is a short-term restriction on liberty the only way to ensure that we do not become subject to tyranny in the long term? And what of non-state actors? Is centralising power in the state actually discouraging British subjects from doing their bit by taking away their rights and with them their responsibilities? So come along and support us civil libertarians and have a little bit of port along the way! The event will be held in the Union - no membership needed to come along though! |
