Presidential Introduction and the Coming Year

E-mail sent by James May, Thursday, 25th September 2014 @ 4:47pm

Dear OE members, it's my pleasure to introduce myself. My name is James May and I will be taking over the helm of Oxford Entrepreneurs as President for 2014-2015.

A bit about me: I just graduated from Oxford University with a Masters in Engineering Science. I have been heavily involved in OE last year holding the role of Head of Marketing, and have dabbled in a couple of my own start-ups. Ultimately I'm an avid entrpereneur.

Anyway I hope you are as excited as I am for the year ahead, we have an exciting year lined up with some amazing new events, programs and opportunities planned. I hope you take advantage of as many opportunities we throw your way (including the fantastic ones below).

OE Summer Internship Initiative

E-mail sent by James May, Monday, 23rd June 2014 @ 4:13pm

Are you an entrepreneur looking for an intern this summer?  We'll help you find one.

Last year it was a huge success:  entrepreneurs said “Wow, these guys were really helpful” and interns said “Yay, now I have some real work/business experience”.   Read feedback from last year here.

The basic gist:  A-level /college level or greater (often times we do get uni level )  students volunteer themselves (for free) to help out local startups/entrepreneurs.   They are expected to do this a minimum of 2 weeks, but in the past it wasn’t uncommon to see the interns extend.

A bad user case: “I need a javascript and node.js developer to build my app for me.”
A good user case: “I need some help with online research and data presentation.”

Though the interns can work remotely, we highly encourage the entrepreneurs to meet face to face as often as possible.  This is so the interns can get their value from the partnership too.  The Launch Pad at SBS is one option where you can meet up, but coordinating such falls mainly on the entrepreneur’s shoulders.  (It’s good for the interns to get some exposure to Oxford University facilities.)

Entrepreneurs should expect to write a recommendation for the interns at some point.  If you are an entrepreneur (or ‘aspiring’ entrepreneur ;)), and are interested, fill out this google form - The form only concerns your availability this summer; further correspondence will come shortly thereafter.

If you are interested as a potential intern, please fill out this google form

Please direct all questions to: Taimur Abdaal <taimur.abdaal@univ.ox.ac.uk>  and Cc:john.stringfellow@oxfordentrepreneurs.co.uk
FYI to interns:  If your question is something like, “I am only available this summer during these days…” or “I can only work these hours…” we are simply going to say, “Work that out with your entrepreneur.”  Even if you have your doubts about whether you can participate, your best bet is to just fill out the form and go from there.

OMG! OE Fort has risen!!!

E-mail sent by James May, Thursday, 19th June 2014 @ 6:19am

OE Fort is ready and we’d really love it if you would consider being a part of it! – www.OEfort.com

What is the fort?  So, our society is 10,000+ strong.  It is made up of everything from super early stage entrepreneurs to top brass at LinkedIn, Skype, Y-Combinator, etc.  We also have members that aren’t working on a startup at all, but simply want to be a part of the ecosystem.   Everyone is scattered and there is no good way for people to meet.  The fort aims to fix this.

Entrepreneurs can showcase their startup – If you are looking for employees, partners, interns, advice, mentors, publicity, investment, etc., this is the best way to do it!  It takes 5 minutes to create a profile and if your idea is super Top Secret, leave out as much detail as you want.

Advocates – So you say you are willing to help out entrepreneurs?  Put your typing where your mouth is and create a profile!  This takes 2 minutes (seriously).  Literally anyone could be an advocate, and everyone SHOULD be!  Everyone has some skill or special knowledge – even if it’s….umm…’measuring the nanometer length of bacteria of the genus Mycoplasma’ or as broad as ‘Venture Capital’, everyone has something to offer and our entrepreneurs may want assistance with a very wide range of challenges.
Be INVOLVED!  Join the fort!!! www.OEfort.com
