Annual Report 07/08

E-mail sent by Alasdair Bell, Thursday, 19th June 2008 @ 6:04pm

Dear Oxford Entrepreneur,

Oxford Entrepreneurs has continued to grow over the past year while sticking to its core values of encouraging and supporting student entrepreneurship through Inspiration, education, and networking. We now have over 3500 members making us the largest free society in Oxford and shows that students are most excited than ever by entreprepreneurialism.

Oxford Entrepreneurs is inspiring students to aim high and giving them a launchpad. This year saw Kulveer and Harjeet Taggar become the first company from Oxford Entrepreneurs to exit for $5m. Previous OEers Sumon Sandhu (SnapTalent), David Langer and Andy Young (Groupspaces), Richard Price (Liveout), Kirill Makharinsky and Bob Goodson (YouNoodle) now all have major funding for their ventures. The multitude of ventures coming out of the society are testament to the entrepreneurial drive OE is unleashing.

I would like to welcome Oxford Entrepreneurs President 08/09, Victoria Lennox. Victoria comes from Canada and has previously setup a successful dance tutoring company and student society focusing on women in politics. I have every confidence that she will lead the society to a new high. Accompanying Victoria will be an evolution in the society’s governance which will allow for increased activity and improved continuity.

Please read on for more details of our events and activities from the past year.

 Alasdair Bell

President 07/08

Wk 3: Growing Your Startup, Join Us!, Enternships, Showcases, Dragons and more...

E-mail sent by Alasdair Bell, Tuesday, 6th May 2008 @ 12:53pm

Dear All,

In this weeks Odds and Ends section of the newsletter is a blog post summarising wisdom from MIT's Underground event. Let me pick up on a key quote about student entrepreneurship.

"Don't overestimate the risk: If you're just about to graduate (or have recently graduated), you might tend to overestimate the actual risk in a startup. Sure, it's not going to pay you what you'd get at a big company, but the odds of you not being able to find some job later, if things just go horribly are pretty high."

Now check our event in 4th week about growing your start-up and sign up! This event gives you a great opportunity to ask entrepreneurs and investors about the road ahead and how to grow a successful company.

All the best,

Saïd Business School Venture Fund - Call for Submissions

E-mail sent by Alasdair Bell, Tuesday, 1st April 2008 @ 6:47pm

We are delighted to announce the 2008 call for submissions to the Saïd Business School Venture Fund (SBSVF). The Fund provides an opportunity for entrepreneurs to access seed capital for their new ventures, and is open to SBS members and alumni, plus University members of Oxford Entrepreneurs, the student society. It is managed by a committee of MBA students and University advisors, which reviews potential investments and administers the fund’s portfolio. Typically, investments are between £50,000 and £100,000.

The committee is looking for realistic, sustainable new ventures. Applicants submit a two-page summary and up to ten finalists will be selected to make a full presentation to the committee, in Oxford, on 28th May 2008. A small number of these finalists will then go on to present at a high-profile public event at the Saïd Business School on the evening of 29th May 2008, which will be chaired by Sir Victor Blank and introduced by Dr John Hood, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford. The panel includes the fund’s original benefactors, retail entrepreneur Sir Philip Green and venture capitalist David Bonderman.

The fund not only provides seed funding for our growing numbers of SBS-related entrepreneurs but also represents an opportunity for finalists to leverage Oxford networks and resources.

Ideas must be submitted to the SBSVF Committee by 5pm (GMT) Wednesday 30th April 2008 in the form of an executive summary. Your executive summary must be no more than two A4 pages long. Please also provide your name, contact details and the dates when you were, or became, a student at the Saïd Business School, or in the case of Oxford Entrepreneurs, the date when you joined the University of Oxford, and the date of joining Oxford Entrepreneurs. If you have team members please give their names and contact details also. You will be informed of the Committee’s decision by mid-May. All finalists will be expected to attend the presentation events in Oxford on 28th and 29th May and will be required to submit a draft PowerPoint presentation one week before the final event in Oxford.
