Venture Capital Today & Tomorrow - Alumni event in London - 11 Nov.

E-mail sent by Michaela Wood, Friday, 5th November 2010 @ 12:10am

Lucy P. Marcus
(Founder & CEO of Marcus Venture Consulting, Chair of the Mobius Life Sciences Fund, Fellow of Judge Business School and Non-Executive Board Director – full bio here) will share her outlook on the state of venture capital in the UK, Europe and beyond, examining how the model is functioning and asking whether it is robust enough to function in the future.

The session will examine the changing nature of what it means to be an accomplished VC in an arena of increasingly complex deals and sectors in a transitioning economy. It will also look at the impact of the economic environment where limited partners and venture capitalists are becoming increasingly risk averse: who is left to invest in early-stage ventures? Finally, Lucy will look at the responsibility the investment community bears when investing in sectors like biotech and cleantech, areas that impact people and the planet.

The event is open to anyone interested in the economy, policy, investment, or innovation.  It promises to be an exciting discussion for those working in venture capital, private equity, investment and finance, as well as providing a useful insight for entrepreneurs working with VCs or seeking funding.

All proceeds from the event will go to the International Step by Step Association (ISSA).

ISSA is a registered charity promoting equal access to quality education and care for all children, especially in the early years of their lives.

I2M Workshop – Sales

Nothing happens without a sale. An entrepreneur has to sell effectively to investors, customers, suppliers and employees for a venture to be successful.

In this 2 hour workshop, Oxford based entrepreneur John Thompson shares the secrets of his success in sales, and explains a systematic and effective way of thinking about the process of selling.

John Thompson started his career in sales at QSS Ltd, an Oxford based software start up. John grew revenues by 1000% in his first two years in sales, and made a significant contribution to the growth of QSS which was sold in 2000 for $115m. In 2001 John co-founded Commerce Decisions Ltd, a procurement software business and secured Venture Capital funding. Commerce Decisions went on to support Government procurement projects worth collectively over £50bn. The business was generating £2m per year of positive cash flow when John sold it to defence and technology giant QinetiQ plc in 2008 for £12m. John is now Managing Director of a £50m turnover business within the QinetiQ group.

OE: A Summer Update

E-mail sent by Ashvir Sangha, Wednesday, 28th July 2010 @ 1:19am

Hello all!

Calm may have descended on Oxford with many students having gone home for the summer vacation. But for Oxford Entrepreneurs, it's business as usual! So it's time for an OE Newsletter with some great opportunities for your consideration...

That's all folks! (Well... not really... Is it ever!!??)

E-mail sent by Ashvir Sangha, Thursday, 17th June 2010 @ 4:05pm

Dear Members, sponsors, partners and friends.

It pains me to say it, but today has finally come! It's now a year since I took over the reins of OE, and what a year it's been. I won't labour the point, and I know Ash is keen to elbow me off the throne before the seat gets too cold, but I just wanted to say a huge thankyou - to everyone who has been involved this year. Thankyou to our sponsors for giving us the cash we need to survive. Thankyou to my committee for supporting me so well, and thanks to all of you for being Oxford Entrepreneurs. I can say with my hand on my heart that this has been the most wonderful (albeit the most challenging) experience of my life - I'll never forget it.

It's been an honour, it's been a privilege, but most of all, it's been a pleasure.

Have a wicked summer all of you, and good luck in anything and everything you choose to do.

Your soon to be ex-President,

Jordan x
