OE: A Summer Update

E-mail sent by a GroupSpaces user, Sunday, 17th July 2011 @ 10:45pm

Hello all!

Calm may have descended on Oxford with many students having gone home for the summer vacation. But for Oxford Entrepreneurs, it's business as usual! So it's time for an OE Newsletter with some great opportunities for your consideration...

Summer Internship Opportunity

Posted by a GroupSpaces user, Sunday, 17th July 2011 @ 10:29pm

  • Hi!

We are looking for a couple of interns this summer to come work at our office located at TechHub, in the heart of Silicon Roundabout. We have two projects you can work on. The first project requires students to perform a market analysis of the VC industry in East London with a special focus on interviewing Tech City entrepreneurs. The second project requires someone with a technical background (computer coding), and project management experience, to liaise with our existing team building out our tech platform. There is some overlap in projects, which provides a great opportunity to gain new experience.

The Tech team is using Python and hosting it on Google App Engine (GAE). Website designs have actually been created by us, even though your input on UX and the programmed code will be needed with every successive iteration. So, the role up front will be more of a project management role transitioning to full-time development work on the website to get a beta version ready for public testing.

What we're offering is effectively a flexible unpaid position for the Summer, working alongside us (we’re all unpaid). However, you will receive a nominal stipend to cover some local travel and food expenses. You will be based in London, working out of our offices in TechHub. You will also have the opportunity to interact with the start-up & VC community in London and Oxford.

We are looking to build a permanent technical team - so, if you're the right fit, you may be hired at the end of the summer. We’re currently funded only for our fixed operating expenses for the next two years. However, we have great interest in the company and we have more investors lined up once we reach proof-of-concept in the market. We also plan to be cash-flow positive by January 2012, by which time we should have regulatory clearance from FSA (UK) and FINRA (USA). This could be a high-reward opportunity – if you’re an entrepreneurial individual willing to work with a dynamic team, please contact: jbelkin@altcapx.com

    About AltCapX:

AltCapX brings a hybrid model to London that incorporates elements of SecondMarket and AngelList. Our initial focus is on creating secondary market liquidity for shares in venture-backed, high-growth tech companies in Europe and the United States. In order to fuel the growth of tech clusters, such as the one in Silicon Roundabout / East London Tech City, we believe there needs to be “recyclable wealth” available in the ecosystem. Early investors and employees who find some liquidity for their stock holdings are able to redeploy this newfound wealth to other start-ups in the area or double-down on their own efforts.

Tonight's debate at the Oxford Union is co-organised with Oxford Entrepreneurs. The motion is "This House Believes That You've Only "Made It" If You Make It Yourself" and sees some of Britain's most successful entrepreneurs take on some of Britain's top corporate/government executives.

In proposition:

  • Levi Roots - has expanded the "Reggae Reggae Sauce" made from his grandmother's recipe into an international brand after appearing on BBC's Dragon's Den. He has since released a cookbook and made his own BBC television programme and is a keen supporter of youth enterprise.
  • Luke Johnson - the ultimate entrepreneur, he has expanded Pizza Express from 12 restaurants to 250 before founding Strada. He was Chairman of Channel 4 and saw the organisation enjoy record revenues and ratings and is currently the Chairman of the Royal Society of Arts.

---
IAN SMITH, Chairman of Young Enterprise UK, will deliver a floor speech
---

In opposition:

(Only 50 Places Available)

Speakers:
-----------------------------

Taso Du Val

As an early and lead engineer at Fotolog (Acquired by Hi-Media for $100m), Slide (Acquired by Google for $224m), and his own companies, Taso brings top management and engineering experience to TopTal. While running a small engineering consulting firm, he recognized that while many of his co-workers overseas were just as good as his friends and colleagues at Google, Facebook, and other companies with notable top engineering talent, it was simply impossible to find more of them. TopTal was thus created as a solution to the sky-rocketing demand for top engineers in Silicon Valley, US, and Europe despite the shrinking local graduation rates of such engineers.

Andrew Masanto

Andrew Masanto is the co-founder of Higher Click SEO Management, Altitude Shoes, MadCheap SEO and My SEO UK. Andrew holds a B Commerce / B Laws degree (1st Class Honors) from The University of Sydney. He has worked with Macquarie Bank and Rothschild as an Investment Banker in Technology related sectors and also worked as an international lawyer for Linklaters in the UK and Australia (where he practiced Information Technology law, amongst other legal fields).

After leaving the legal profession, Andrew subsequently successfully founded and ran numerous online companies, including Altitude Shoes, the UK’s largest online retailer of mens Elevator Shoes. The success of his online ventures came from his SEO and PPC work and many of Andrew’s companies now rank at the top of Google for competitive keywords.

Andrew Smith

Andrew is the founder of Cendez, a fast growing on and offline retail company with distribution in 7 countries.

His products are sold on the high street in numerous stores and will soon be on the shelves of major retailers including Boots, and online through websites such as pureclinica.com, popacols.com, aviahealth.co.uk.

As the CEO of a company that experiences triple digit growth year on year, Cendez operates on a business model centred around the 4 hour work week methodology. By automating, outtasking, and outsourcing the core systems and processes within the company, Andrew has developed a blueprint that allowed him to not only restructure his business but also his life. Andrew now spends his time travlling while working on expanding existing and developing new revenue streams.

Gael Breton

Gael Breton is Head of SEO and co-founder of the SEO companies listed above. He has been involved with numerous internet and start-up ventures such as bodyrock.tv and flippa.com. After graduating from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Rouen Business School, he worked for various SEO companies and will be speaking about how SEO works and how you can use it to kickstart your online businesses.
