Some Information about OE and the Committee

Oxford Entrepreneurs began in 2002 to encourage student enterprise at the University of Oxford and beyond. Since then we have grown to become the largest free society in Oxford and the largest student enterprise society in Europe. Through expanding the OE model to leading universities such as Imperial, LSE and Brookes, a national movement encouraging student enterprise has been forged. OE exists as a force to encourage students to consider entrepreneurship as a career option. Our success can be gauged by the six fully funded start-ups which have emerged from our ranks, with one recently exiting for $5m.
The Committee attracts our most talented and interesting members - most of us want to start businesses on graduation. We’re getting great experience from building the Society, and run it in a way that is a model for our members in terms of innovation, quality and ambition.
General Guidelines for Committee Positions
Investment:
* 6-8 hours/week during full term, 2-4 hours/week during vacation * Attend the full-day Committee Retreat on October 5, 2008 * Attend weekly Committee meetings during term time * Attend OE events * Pioneer your role and help refine it for subsequent years

Return:
* Exclusive dinners with top speakers * Ultimate networking position within the society * Media coverage * Experience developing a venture * Work with an experienced, enterprising and dynamic team * Agreed business expenses * Personalized OE business cards and Committee shirts

All Committee members must be leaders in their own right and must possess a high level of accountability and responsibility, be self motivated and enthusiastic, and be committed to the aims and objectives of OE.
If you want to join us in this venture, send a CV and covering email to OE’s PR Director, Radhika Mehra, at Radhika@oxfordentrepreneurs.co.uk. Please tell us about your interests, where you are in life, what you can contribute and what you hope to gain. The deadline for all roles is Monday, September 15, 2008. Open applications are welcome.

E-mail: [OE] Annual Report 07/08

Dear Oxford Entrepreneur,
Oxford Entrepreneurs has continued to grow over the past year while sticking to its core values of encouraging and supporting student entrepreneurship through Inspiration, education, and networking. We now have over 3500 members making us the largest free society in Oxford and shows that students are most excited than ever by entreprepreneurialism.
Oxford Entrepreneurs is inspiring students to aim high and giving them a launchpad. This year saw Kulveer and Harjeet Taggar become the first company from Oxford Entrepreneurs to exit for $5m. Previous OEers Sumon Sandhu (SnapTalent), David Langer and Andy Young (Groupspaces), Richard Price (Liveout), Kirill Makharinsky and Bob Goodson (YouNoodle) now all have major funding for their ventures. The multitude of ventures coming out of the society are testament to the entrepreneurial drive OE is unleashing.
I would like to welcome Oxford Entrepreneurs President 08/09, Victoria Lennox. Victoria comes from Canada and has previously setup a successful dance tutoring company and student society focusing on women in politics. I have every confidence that she will lead the society to a new high. Accompanying Victoria will be an evolution in the society’s governance which will allow for increased activity and improved continuity.
Please read on for more details of our events and activities from the past year.

Idea Idol

After four months, hundreds of entries and weeks of training and preparation, we crowned 2008’s Idea Idols in a dramatic final on 19th February 2008 at The Said Business School.
Over 300 people attended to watch the finalist deliver their 2 minute elevator before facing gruelling questions by the four judges, including Deborah Meaden, who is well known for being one of the Dragon’s on the BBC’s Dragon’s Den. Other judges were Katherine Mathieson, Head of Future Innovators at NESTA, Reshma Sohoni, CEO of Seedcamp, and Sebastian Grigg, MD of Investment Banking at Credit Suisse. http://tinyurl.com/35o57f
Deborah Meaden commented that “the presentations we had here tonight beat 90% of the presentations we have on Dragon’s Den”
The atmosphere in the lecture theatre was electric. Alasdair Bell and Jennifer Tsim, two of the OE committee members, hosted the evening and kept the crowds entertained as they introduced the event. Once the finalists had pitched their idea and faced tough questions, the judges went off to deliberate as to the winner.
The joint winners were fledging firms Altitude Medical and Zoombu, which were awarded £4,500 each.

Altitude Medical, set up by Alexander Roman Oshmyansky and Dan V Nicolau Jr, have produced a simple device which involves antiseptic being released every time a door handle is used in a hospital. The inventors believe that this device will reduce the risk of infections and superbugs in hospitals caused by staff and visitors failing to wash their hands properly. Altitude Medical were also awarded a £500 People’s Choice Award after winning the vote of over 300 local entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, business angels and fellow students. Later this concept won second place in the international, £25k Big Idea business idea competition.
Zoombu is an idea which Alastair David Hann came up with. He describes it as the ultimate way to plan a trip between any two places in Europe. Zoombu searches every permutation of coach, rail, air, sea and car travel, enabling users to find the fastest, cheapest or greenest routes between the destinations.
Glen Mehn received £500 to make the trip to Silicon Valley to present their heat transfer concept to Google.

Here is what the press said:
* Oxford Mail – Idea Idol Winners Named http://www.oxfordmail.net * BBC Radio Oxfordshire: Alasdair Bell, Altitude Medical and Zoobu were interviewed on BBC Radio Oxford about the competition and the businesses. * Cherwell and Oxford Student ran features on the competition.

Entrepreneurs – are they born or trained? And how can the UK grow more of them?

Registration is from 5.00pm with presentations to start promptly at 5.30pm.
The Panel debate will be followed by a wine reception and networking until 7.30pm.
NESTA, 1 Plough Place, London, EC4A 1DE

Come and see Oxford Entrepreneurs Special Relations Officer, Rajeeb Dey, take part in a panel debate!

Over the last 20 years, entrepreneurship has emerged as a major focus of research interest among academics, policymakers and educators. While much has been learned about how entrepreneurs can be identified and nurtured, there are still differing views about to what extent an entrepreneurial approach is innate – and how much is shaped by circumstance.

The answers to these questions are important – entrepreneurs can deliver social and economic benefits for all of us. Yet without a detailed understanding of how entrepreneurs are formed, how can we ensure that the UK has a culture that supports entrepreneurs? Crucially, how can we be sure that we have the right educational environment to encourage and support the entrepreneurial efforts of our young people from the earliest age?

Join us on Thursday 12th June for a lively panel debate to launch Professor Elizabeth Chell’s The Entrepreneurial Personality: A Social Construction, a timely look at how our entrepreneurial potential can be catalysed or not by the cultural, economic and business environment around us. Elizabeth Chell will open the discussions by presenting findings from her research on entrepreneurs. John Bates will respond and will suggest an agenda for what the UK should do about it. They will be joined on the Panel by Rajeeb Dey, founder of the English Secondary Students Association and previous President of the Oxford University Entrepreneurs Club, and Alastair Wilson, Chief Executive of the School for Social Entrepreneurs. The event will be chaired by Richard Halkett, Executive Director of Policy & Research at NESTA.

Queen's Entrepreneurs' International Business Plan Competition

The Queen’s Entrepreneurs’ Competition (QEC) is an international business plan competition that allows undergraduate students from around the world to come together, present their innovative ideas and develop their entrepreneurial skills, with a chance to win over $25,000 in awards. The competition, which takes place annually at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, is entirely organized by undergraduate students of the Queen’s School of Business.

The preliminary round of the competition begins in November where teams submit business plans which are judged by qualified business professionals. The top sixteen teams are then invited to participate in the final round of the competition during a weekend in January, where they will compete for the top prize of $15,000 CDN.

During the weekend, there will be a keynote speaker and competitors will also have a chance to network with the judges and other schools. Past QEC speakers have included Clive Beddoe, founder of WestJet Airlines, and Seaton McLean, founder of Alliance Atlantis.

The deadline for the business plan submission is November 1st, 2008. The final competition will be held in January 22nd-24th, 2009. For more information, students can visit www.theqec.com.

E-mail: [OE] Wk 3: Growing Your Startup, Join Us!, Enternships, Showcases, Dragons and more...

Dear All,

In this weeks Odds and Ends section of the newsletter is a blog post summarising wisdom from MIT’s Underground event. Let me pick up on a key quote about student entrepreneurship.

“Don’t overestimate the risk: If you’re just about to graduate (or have recently graduated), you might tend to overestimate the actual risk in a startup. Sure, it’s not going to pay you what you’d get at a big company, but the odds of you not being able to find some job later, if things just go horribly are pretty high.”

Now check our event in 4th week about growing your start-up and sign up! This event gives you a great opportunity to ask entrepreneurs and investors about the road ahead and how to grow a successful company.

All the best,
Alasdair

Business Week's Most Innovative Companies

The latest issue of Business Week contains its rankings of the world’s 25 most innovative companies. The list, developed in cooperation with the Boston Consulting Group, is based on surveys of more than 2500 leading corporate executives. Not surprisingly, Apple tops the list for the third straight year. Most respondents lauded Apple for its introduction of the iPhone which has, in only ten months, pushed Apple to #3 in the global smartphone market. Other innovative firms include (in rank order): Google, Toyota, General Electric, and Microsoft.

“The 25 Most Innovative Companies: Smart Ideas for Tough Times,” appears in the April 28, 2008 issue of Business Week.

The Pioneers of Today: Israeli Business & Entrepreneurship

Oxford Investment Club, ManSoc, OUIFS, Oxford Entrepreneurs, E&M Society and the Oxford Israeli Cultural Society present:
Thursday May 1st (Week 2) 8 - 10pm, Said Business School

“Israel is like a bit of Silicon Valley.” (Bill Gates)

While 60 years ago the challenge for Israel was to build a state from scratch, today it is an economic one and its pioneers are its entrepreneurs, scientists and businesspeople. With venture capital firms investment growing by 8.5% ($1.76 billion, in 2007), Israel has the second highest number of start-ups outside Silicon Valley and is considered a vital “incubator” for new technology companies to form before they are taken over by larger conglomerates.

This talk by two of Israel’s most successful businessmen will look at their own secrets of success and address what entrepreneurs in other countries may learn from the examples of their Israeli counterparts.

Dr. Abe Peled set up and launched Israel’s first Internet Service Provider, after which he became Chairman and CEO of NDS Group. Its clients include DirecTV, BSkyB, CanalSat and SkyItalia, and during his tenure, he has expanded the company 15-fold bringing it to its current position of holding 35% of the global market for digital pay-TV.

Zeev Holtzman is the Founder and Chairman of Giza Venture Capital. Giza was founded in 1992 and is one of the pioneer funds in Israel. It manages over $500 million, currently raising its 5th fund.

Chairperson: Colin Green was Commercial Director and Company Secretary of BT Group plc, Chairman of BT Spain and Senior Board member of ECI Telecom, one of Israeli’s largest Hi-Tech global companies. He is currently Chairman of the Hermes Group Pension Scheme, Green Aid, Shalom Nursery Ltd, a Trustee of Nightingale House and a voluntary adviser for the Citizen’s Advice Bureau.

Some Information about Oxford Entrepreneurs and the Committee

Oxford Entrepreneurs began in 2002 to encourage student enterprise at the University of Oxford and beyond. Since then we have grown to become the largest free society in Oxford and the largest student enterprise society in Europe. Through expanding the OE model to leading universities such as Imperial, LSE and Brookes a national movement encouraging student enterprise has been forged.

We’re getting great experience from building the Society, and run it in a way which is a model for our members in terms of innovation, quality and ambition. If you want to join us in this venture, send a CV and covering email to personnel@oxfordentrepreneurs.co.uk. Please tell us about your interests, where you’re at in life, what you can contribute and what you hope to gain. Deadline for all roles except president is Saturday 10th May. Open applications are welcome.
