Visiting Tibetan Monk: Wednesday 27 April, 4.30pm in the Oriel JCR Annex

Posted by Buddhist Society Secretary, Tuesday 27th April 2010 @ 10:51am

A Tibetan monk named Choedak will be visiting Oxford this Wednesday and has agreed to meet with members of the Buddhist Society. He'll give a brief talk about his experiences growing up in Tibet and his escape into exile in India, as well as his current work teaching and researching for a book on the history of the Dalai Lamas. After that, he'll be happy to take questions. It should be a pretty informal event, and so a good opportunity to get to know a monk and learn about his way of life. That's this Wednesday at 4.30pm in the Oriel JCR Annex.

Meditation classes return for Trinity Term

Posted by Buddhist Society Secretary, Tuesday 27th April 2010 @ 10:48am

As usual, we have our regular meditation classes this term at 8pm in the JCR Annex of Oriel College. Beginners can join in at any time, and you don't have to be affiliated with the university to join us. Bring a cushion to sit on, comfortable clothes to sit in, and a mug for tea. If you'd like to be added to our mailing list, drop us a line at buddhist.society@studentclubs.ox.ac.uk. There's a good chance we'll have to change location in 4th and 8th weeks, so watch for e-mail updates.

Sarah Shaw talk Thursday 26 November

Posted by Buddhist Society Secretary, Friday 20th November 2009 @ 12:10pm

We're very pleased to have Sarah Shaw coming in to give a talk called "Finding the balance of calm and insight: the Breathing Mindfulness sutta." Sarah is a member of the Samatha Trust and both a teacher and scholar of Buddhism. Her translation work includes the Penguin Classics edition of the Jatakas as well as "Buddhist Meditation: An Anthology of Texts From the Pali Canon" published by Routledge. In addition, Routledge recently published her book "An Introduction to Buddhist Meditation." Sarah teaches at Oxford's Department for Continuing Education.

The talk will be at 8pm on Thursday 26 November in the Miles Room of St. Peter's College (NB same college as Ven. Dhammasami's talk last week, but a different room).

Buddhist Meditation classes, MT09

Posted by Buddhist Society Secretary, Wednesday 14th October 2009 @ 6:24pm

Welcome back, or welcome for the first time, to Oxford! As usual, we'll be holding meditation classes every Tuesday evening of term (Oct. 13 - Dec. 1) at 8pm in the JCR Annexe at Oriel College. All are welcome (you don't need to be affiliated with the university to join), and you can join at any time.

The classes offer a graduated introduction to a Thai Theravada form of Buddhist meditation that brings calm and mindfulness. After meditation practice, we normally have a brief discussion of some aspect of Buddhist teaching and then enjoy one another's company over tea and biscuits, during which time people can meet one-on-one with our teacher, Jas'.

Participants range in experience from none whatsoever to people who have many years of exerience with meditation. No need to "be a Buddhist" in order to join: many people find they benefit simply from the calm and focus the meditation brings them, regardless of their spiritual affiliations, or lack thereof.

Remember to bring comfortable clothing, a cushion to sit on (your bum will be thankful!), and a mug if you want tea.

The classes are free, but voluntary donations are appreciated for the provision of our typically sumptuous tea and biscuits :)
