Recent OUEC alumnus Emily Ainsworth joined a Mexican travelling circus earlier this year as recipient of the RGS/BBC Journey of a Lifetime Award. Her documentary will be playing tomorrow morning (Friday 29 August) on BBC Radio 4. Tune in at 11am, or find it online. Here's what the Radio Times had to say:
How do you kill a circus? Go for the juggler... Thankfully, the family-run circus in Mexico that young anthropologist Emily Ainsworth travelled with this spring is in no danger of dying just yet. Although, as owner and ringmaster Don Humberto points out, he can only afford it because the business has been handed down from his grandfather. As winner of this year's Royal Geographical Society and the Radio 4 Journey of a Lifetime award, Ainsworth gets to fill in as an emergency Princess when they're one short and, far more worryingly, is chased home by a sex pest (don't worry, she's fine). All the colour and spectacle of an exotic show is here, from a harmonica-playing elephant to the sad reason why there are no tigers in Humberto's circus. You'll have to listen to find out.
