European Affairs Society

The European Affairs Society provides a much needed non-partisan forum for the discussion of European affairs.
The Society seeks to provide its members with an informed and critical exploration of affairs concerning Europe. The society strives to maintain its position as the university’s leading forum in this area and remains entirely impartial in its work. At the core of its termly programme the society brings its members into contact with noteworthy speakers by hosting a series of seven or eight discussion forums. The society has been fortunate enough to welcome senior diplomats, analysts, artists, politicians and Heads of State to its meetings. The society attracts some of the best people to Oxford and in recent years the society has been addressed by Joschka Fischer, Vaclav Klaus, Neil Kinnock, Sir Leon Brittan, Javier Solana, and Franz Vranitzky.

EAS Committee for Trinity

E-mail newsletter sent by Catherina Yurchyshyn, Tuesday 9th March 2010 @ 10:43pm

Dear everyone-on-our mailing list,

Hilary is almost up, and I hope you've enjoyed this term as much as I have. After our elections we have formed the new committee for Trinity 2010! The great news for everyone who wants to get involved is that there are still three positions up for grabs:

1. Sponsorship Secretary: target potential benefactors for sponsorship
2. Membership Secretary: maintain up-to-date membership database, organise a termly event to attract new members
3. Research Secretary: updates on European news and profile sheets for guest speakers

If you are interested in applying for any of these positions, then please email me at
catherina.yurchyshyn@queens.ox.ac.uk with a short 100-200 word manifesto by Friday of 8th week (12th March).

Have a great Easter, and look out for coming EAS events in Trinity!
European Love,
Cat

BBC Editors and Elections!

E-mail newsletter sent by Tabassum Rasheed, Sunday 7th March 2010 @ 5:55pm

Dear All!

The last week of term sees the EAS host two very important events: Monday evening, 7.30 pm, at Mansfield College, we have Gavin Hewitt, the BBC's Editor for Europe talking about his experiences in Europe and where it stands now within the world; Tuesday sees our termly elections - if you like the work we've done in Hilary, this is a great way of getting involved with the EAS and making your mark on the society - see below for more details!

I've also attached some info about AEGEE and European conferences for anyone who's interested. On a nostalgic note, Alastair Lenczner, the architect from Foster and Partners who came to talk in 4th week, has sent us a copy of his presentation here.

And that's it! I'd like to state that I've really enjoyed my Presidency and I hope you've all had a great time at our events too! Thank you for coming out and making up such a lively and questioning audience for our speakers' talks; it's really made the events. And most importantly, have a lovely Easter vac!!

European love and kisses,

BBC Editor Gavin Hewitt: The Age of Anxiety

Posted by Alex Chadwick, Saturday 6th March 2010 @ 9:05am

The European Affairs Society's last speaker of term, ladies and gentlemen, is none other than Gavin Hewitt, The BBC's Europe Editor.

An experienced correspondent, Hewitt has covered many major events from the Soham murders and Potters Bar rail crash in the UK to the Kashmir disputes and recent United States elections. He joined the BBC’s Panorama programme in 1984 as a presenter and was in East Berlin when the Berlin wall came down. Whilst at Panorama, Hewitt made a programme which led to the largest ever investigation into police corruption in the UK, as well as programmes about the Kosovo crisis and about how student leaders were smuggled out of China following Tiananmen Square.

Meanwhile, in 2000 Gavin Hewitt became a Special Correspondent and in 2001 he won the Television Society Award for his coverage of the Oldham riots and, also won the Broadcast Award for England’s Shame, an investigation into England’s football hooliganism at Euro 2000.

At Oxford, he'll be talking about pan-European issues about current crises facing the Continent, from economic to democratic troubles and the culture of anxiety that is slowly emerging among its citizens. As usual, his talk will be followed by a Q & A session; this talk is a must for any Europhiles or budding journalists, as Gavin will provide an in-depth look into both these fields.

For more information please see the information card on Gavin Hewitt here (http://oueas.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Information-Sheet-Gavin-Hewitt.pdf).

How to tame the bankers: Sven Giegold in Oxford on Thursday!

E-mail newsletter sent by Todor Todorov, Wednesday 3rd March 2010 @ 10:51pm

Hello Everyone,

Tomorrow (Thursday) is an exciting day as Sven Giegold graces us with his presence at the Danson Room in Trinity College! Sven is on the Economic And Monetary Affairs European Parliament committee which has shot to prominence following the start of the financial crisis. He will be involved in re-designing the regulatory mechanisms and regulation rules for banks in the EU, a procedure which will undoubtedly have big and long-lasting implications.

In his talk, he will cover EU financial and bank regulation closely. As a founding member of Attac - a Europe wide social movement (one of the largest with Greenpeace) which fights for the introduction of a global tax on financial transactions, his vision is "To build a Europe with a strong environmental and social framework" and so he will also tell us what steps can be taken in such a direction.

Summary:

SVEN GIEGOLD, TRINITY COLLEGE - DANSON ROOM

THURSDAY, 7.30pm - 8.30pm

See you there!
