Opportunities

E-mail sent by Isobel Caton Harrison, Friday, 24th February 2012 @ 3:22pm

Good afternoon badmintoners,

I have two notices of reasonable importance. Firstly, if you feel you're not getting enough playing time at the current clubnight sessions, I've been informed that Oxford Brookes University, as you may already know, also runs casual badminton sessions twice a week at their sports hall, which is located on the Headington Road, beyond South Park. They have five courts, and charge £25 per term, or £3 for guests. The times are Fridays 8.30-10.30pm and Sundays 8.00-10.00pm. The Sunday session is apparently reasonably busy but the Friday one is very quiet. There's no website for this club, instead they have a Facebook page, and I believe that this is the link:

http://www.facebook.com/groups/84050479958/

If the link doesn't work feel free to rail against my technical incompetence and just search for it on Facebook.

Secondly, as you know, my time as Clubnight Director is finishing up at the end of this term, and the committee will be looking for someone to replace me, alongside all the other positions. A motion was recently passed to the effect that two people can run jointly for the post of Clubnight Director, meaning that you would then share resonsibility for the sessions, so one person could just do Thursdays and the other Sundays, or however you wanted to do it. I would strongly urge anyone who makes regular use of the badminton sessions to try for this post, either with someone else or by yourself; you've seen that one person can do it, so two people sharing the job should find it perfectly manageable. You do not need to be good at badminton to apply; I was a beginner-level player when I took up the job a year ago, and you're certain to improve over the year. If you and a friend (or just you) are interested in running than feel free to let me know and I can quite happily teach you some of the basics of the job in the four remaining sessions this term if you would like; there really isn't too much to learn. Also if you would like more information then drop me an e-mail.

That's everthing, thanks to all of you for your enthusiam and good humour; it's been an honour to serve.
Best regards,
Isobel Caton Harrison

Clubnight Announcement

E-mail sent by Isobel Caton Harrison, Saturday, 4th February 2012 @ 2:29pm

Greetings to everyone,

I have an important issue to announce, so bear with me a moment. As some of you will already know, some members are unhappy with the numbers of guests in attendance at the clubnight sessions and have requested that something be done to change this situation. I have given this matter very careful consideration and have decided that, starting tomorrow, guest numbers will be limited to eight on Sundays and to twelve on Thursdays. Since I would like to be fair to both guests and members, I should add that these numbers are not radically lower than the amount of guests who currently play; however they represent approximately the turning-point beyond which there are just a few too many people. I would encourage any current non-members who know that they would like to play fairly regularly to purchase membership; e-mail me if you're not sure how to do this. I will make exceptions for visiting students who are only here for a term.
Having said all this, I would like to add that I cannot make an absolute guarantee that sessions will become immediately less busy following these changes, since all changes take a while to have any effect.

I must also add that these measures are not set in stone and in the case of any unforseen/extenuating circumstances, the strictness of their implementation rests at my discretion. I hope that these measures will go some way to alleviating numbers; I will assess after a period of time how effective they have been.
Thanks to all of you for your cooperation, and see you soon,

Isobel Caton Harrison

P.S. Since policing guest numbers might be difficult on very busy days, I may well ask one or two of you to help me out with this on the day; your generosity is much appreciated here.

Packing-up time

E-mail sent by Isobel Caton Harrison, Sunday, 29th January 2012 @ 11:17am

Greetings all; just a quick note:

Firstly, my sincere thanks to Amog and Gavin for handling the session on Thursday, when the Dinner was taking place.
Secondly, it seems that the Archery Club, who have the courts after us on Sundays, would like us to get off the courts a bit faster at the end of our session. As a rule I don't think we're usually too bad in this respect, but I did let the session go on a bit overtime last week. So this time I'll be making sure that packing up starts at about five to five, and that we're off the courts on time.

Here ends the bulletin, I look forward to seeing many of you later today.

The Annual Dinner - The Final Details

E-mail sent by Tim Barendt, Tuesday, 24th January 2012 @ 7:50pm

To those attending the Annual Dinner,

The OUBaC Committee are really looking forward to joining you all this Thursday. We will begin at 7:30pm for a champagne (including soft drinks) reception in the Christ Church Buttery. Please arrive promptly at Tom Gate on St Aldates and there will be a custodian and signs to direct you the way. Dinner shall be served at 8pm. The buttery shall be open for those wishing to purchase other drinks, please do not bring your own. May I remind you that the dress code is black tie.
After dinner we shall be visiting Christ Church Bar (the (Th)Undercroft). All those who would like to join us after dinner are more than welcome and this invitation is also extended to those who are not coming to dinner. Please e-mail me if you would like to come and I shall explain how you can get into college to join us.
For those who have been asking about payment: this shall be sorted in the days after the dinner once the club has received the bill. It will be approx £34 for drinkers of wine and £28 for non drinkers.

Until Thursday, yours as always,

Tim on behalf of the OUBaC Committee 2012

Welcome back

E-mail sent by Isobel Caton Harrison, Sunday, 15th January 2012 @ 11:38am

Hello all and welcome back!

This is just to make clear that this term I won't be asking for people's names in advance of the Thursday clubnight sessions, since that was just a temporary expedient when there were lots of new people. All of the sessions are nevertheless on as normal and at the same time as last term.
That's all, I look forward to seeing everyone again.

Isobel Caton Harrison

P.S. If you became a member for the first time last term, I've replaced the stickers on your pegs with more permanent ones so they might look a bit different. Very exciting..

Annual Dinner

E-mail sent by Tim Barendt, Tuesday, 10th January 2012 @ 8:29pm

Dear All,

The final numbers will be submitted for the Annual Dinner this time on this coming Thursday so you have 48 hours to e-mail me if you would like to come. There are still some places left. If there are more people than places I will conduct a ballot, and then ALL people who have been successful/unsuccessful will be notified by me. I will then e-mail those who are coming with further details about food, drink and times. So, just to stress please e-mail me in the next 2 days if you would like to come, since I can only make very minor updates to the list after this time. Many thanks,

Tim

Quiz a Professional Badminton Player...

E-mail sent by Tim Barendt, Monday, 9th January 2012 @ 5:53pm

Hello all,

Sorry for more spamming. But one of the guys in the club (Chris Lim to be precise) is doing an interview for The Cherwell with Elizabeth Cann, an England badminton player currently trying out for the Olympics team. If you have any questions you would like answering or you think would be good to appear in the interview then please e-mail him: christopher.lim@st-annes.ox.ac.uk . Get thinking.

Thankyou.

The Annual Dinner

E-mail sent by Tim Barendt, Monday, 9th January 2012 @ 8:58am

Dear All,

Apologies for the faulty link in the last e-mail about The Annual Dinner. The e-mail containing the details can be found below for those considering whether or not to come.

For the first time in a long time I am pleased to announce the appearance of the OUBaC Annual Dinner in the HT calender. The date for your diary is Thursday of 2nd week in Hilary Term. This is open to ALL members of the club (so both clubnight and squad players) and in fact there will be a quota on the evening of half and half from each of these two sections of the club. So I am afraid this does mean that places are going to be limited to 47 at the table. I am going to operate it by a ballot system with half the people being picked at random from the clubnight pool and the same from the squad pool. If you are a member of this years committee (safety rep excluded) then you are guarenteed a place but importantly this will not affect the ratio of clubnight to squad players. So if you want to apply for a place then please reply to this e-mail with just the subject of the e-mail "OUBaC Dinner clubnight/squad" depending on what you are a member of. Please include any dietary requirements and if you would like wine ONLY in the main body of the e-mail.

Now for some details on the dinner itself. Its going to be held in the McKenna Room (a fancy function room) in Christ Church. It will will be 4 courses with the menu as follows:

Honey Roast Parsnip Soup with Crème Fraîche and Parsnip Crisps

Chargrilled Chicken Supreme with Tomato Risotto, Olives, Sun-Blush Tomatoes,
Deep-fried Capers and Parmesan Wafers

[V=Aubergine, Tomato and Haloumi Torte with Tomato Risotto, Olives,
Sun-Blush Tomatoes, Deep Fried Capers and Parmesan Wafers]

White Chocolate Profiteroles with Hot Chocolate Sauce

Christ Church Evening Blend Coffee and Mints

The price is going to be £30 without wine, and approximately £36 with wine. This is an approximation at the moment because I have not chosen the wine or attempted to bargain a better price for us. The price may also rise slightly as I am hoping to arrange a champagne reception aswell. I realise that to many this sounds a little expensive (indeed more expensive than subs for most) but I can assure you that Christ Church put on a fantastic "black tie Oxford Formal" and the company will be nothing short of sublime, we are all badminton players after all! I will keep you all updated with regards to the menu, wine list and prices as I arrange things but for now please reply ASAP if you would like to come in the way described above. I will be closing the ballot at 12pm on Friday of 8th week this term and then doing the draw on Saturday (in public so people can see nothing suspicious happens!). Best of luck,

Tim Barendt
(OUBaC President)

If you wish to come then please e-mail me back ASAP. I will need to submit the final list of poeple by Thursday of 1st week.

All the best,

Clubnight tournament this Thursday

E-mail sent by Isobel Caton Harrison, Saturday, 26th November 2011 @ 10:39pm

Hello all,

I am writing to inform you that this Thursday (1st December) I am holding the annual clubnight tournament! If you were here last year you'll have some recollection of how it worked, but if you're new this year, then it's organised by having four or five pairs on each court all playing in turn against one another, and the pair with the most wins progressing to the next round. There'll be exciting prizes for the winning and runner-up pair.
If you know who you would like to be paired with for the tournament then please let me know before Thursday morning and I'll arrange that for you; note that in order to keep things fair two squad members can't be paired together, but otherwise you're free to choose. If you don't give me a pairing you'll be paired up with someone on the day. Non-members are also free to attend.
Send me your names as normal, but in the interests of general sanity please only send me your name if you're sure you're going to come, and if you don't have a pairing try to come ten minutes early so that I can sort that out.
Thanks for your help! I wish you all an (advanced) Merry Christmas.

Isobel Caton Harrison

(PS. For those of you wondering about holiday clubnight times: we haven't yet been informed by the Sports Fed of the vacation timings, but as soon as we know an e-mail will be sent out telling you what the timings will be. For now, sessions are as normal until Saturday of 9th week (10th December)).
