MUN Debate: Emerging Nuclear Powers

Monday, 26th October 2009 at 8pm - 9:45pm

Location: Danson Room, Trinity College

This event is in the past.

Our third Model United Nations debate of term will be on the topic of "Emerging Nuclear Powers: New Approaches to Disarmament and Non-Proliferation".

In recent years, the Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea shook the world (quite literally) when seismic monitoring equipment confirmed that it had conducted underground nuclear tests. This brought the question of how to respond to states developing or possessing nuclear weapons outside of the framework of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT). Currently, India, Pakistan, DPRK, and Israel are non-parties to the NPT either known or suspected to have nuclear weapons.

For more information on this question, which is a topic of discussion at this year's OxIMUN Disarmament and International Security Committee, consult the OxIMUN study guide at http://oximun.org/OxIMUN09_DISEC_A.pdf.

Before the debate, we will briefly discussing the procedure regarding draft resolutions, so be sure to come along so you can get to know this important part of MUN debating.
