The Oxford Society for Third Sector Research aims at promoting an interdisciplinary dialogue on civil groups, be they the more institutionalised non governmental organizations (NGOs), the traditional social movements, the new wave of independent media associations, or many others. All of these clusters of engaged citizens have made it their purpose to participate in the enhancement of democracy, the assessment of governments and supranational bodies, the defence of their stakeholders’ rights and the alleviation of their grievances, as well as a wide range of other activities. Overall, they have achieved a high level of legitimacy among the general public in a time when political parties and governmental institutions are losing it rapidly. This has strengthened such organizations in local, national and international political, financial and social spheres.
