E-mail: [OAV] First Session! Friday! 8:00! Platnauer Room, Brasenose College!
 | |
Sorry those of you just on this list for the late email, though there probably isn't very many of you.
And sorry if you already got this email Via the Announce List. But hey, this is the Special Edition!
Welcome to Oxford for the First time.
Welcome Back to Oxford.
And Hey again if you're always in Oxford.
I am Jonathan Barrett, OAV Mascot (Curse you, Alexei!), also known as Lord Of the Black Scarf!
A New University Term Has Begun, and With it, another Term of Anime Soc Sessions!
This will mostly be a direct copy of the email sent out on the Announce List. But it is is the GroupSpace Special Edition, With Extras Including Secret Links, and Behind the Scenes Features on Fresher's Fair, so you don't mind getting it twice.
First about our first meeting of term and other stuff that was in the first email, as was written by Janice... mostly (I've made a couple alterations...).
If you've already read this, you'll probably want to scroll past it...
********************************
Greetings to new members, existing members, and people who now regret signing up for all those societies during Freshers' Fair. (Those of you in the last group can scroll down to section 5. But that would be a bit cruel of you.)
Welcome to Oxford Anime Vision, otherwise known as the Anime Society or AnimeSoc. This email reads in decreasing order of importance, allowing you to flee whenever convenient.
------------1. IN (VERY) BRIEF
The society: Holds weekly screenings of episodes from five anime series, in running order, as well as one Random Episode each meeting.
Anime: Japanese animation. A medium, not a genre. Includes everything from the Japanese equivalent of Saturday morning cartoons and romantic comedies to gritty Noir thrillers and supernatural epics. We try to show a mix of stuff; see section 3.
------------2. THE FIRST MEETING
Where: Platnauer Room, Brasenose College
When: Friday 17 October, 8 pm - 11 pm
Brasenose College faces the Radcliffe Camera, which is that domed building tourists like to photograph.
Here is a map:
The Platnauer Room is located up Staircase XI in the New Quad. Turn left after the lodge, go through the archway and around the garden beyond it, and you should find yourself in New Quad. Taking that position as the lower-right corner, Staircase XI is along the 'top' side.
Failing which, you can simply loiter in Brasenose lodge just before 8 pm. We'll have people waiting there to lead you to the room; you may recognise them from (a) having seen them at the Freshers' Fair Stall, (b) their OAV T-Shirts of Awesome (c) By the Black Long Scarf of Super Special Awesome (possibly, though there is a good chance I will be late... :( ).
We'll be holding the traditional First Meeting raffle, with chances to win anime-related prizes such as DVDs, figurines, Figures and manga volumes. And Even DeathNotes and a Giant OAV Poster! Membership fees won't be collected this week. There is post-screening ice-cream and chat at G&D's. And if all that isn't enough to entice you, check out our line-up below.
[------------2.5 THE NEXT MEETING
The Platnauer Room is unfortunately on the small side, but Week 2's meeting will be held in the much more accommodating Lecture Room XI of Brasenose College. Just so you know.]
------------3. THIS TERM'S SERIES
CLAYMORE
In a world filled with shape-shifting demons known as Yoma, a shady organisation has created Claymores -- half-human, half-Yoma hybrids -- to protect the human race. This is the story of one such Claymore, Clare, and the village boy who joins her as she battles against Yoma, conspiracies, and her own demonic side.
CLANNAD
The heart-warming tale of a disaffected high school boy and the sweet, quiet girl who changes his life. Romance, drama, comedy, cherry blossoms, and enough supporting characters to suit everyone's tastes in fictional teenage girls.
TRIGUN
Vash the Stampede is an outlaw with a trail of destruction behind him, a sixty-billion-dollar bounty on his head, and a strange dislike for actually killing people. Meryl and Milly are two insurance agents sent to track him down. Nicholas D. Wolfwood is a bad-ass gunslinging preacher. It's a Western. In space. Need we say more?
BACCANO!
It's 1930, and rival mafia gangs are painting Prohibition-era New York a sinister shade of red. But this isn't your run-of-the-mill mafia anime: there's alchemy, kidnappings, a pair of 'idiot thieves', a trainful of shady agendas, and more narrative threads than you'd expect, all set to a jazz soundtrack. Think Pulp Fiction with a touch of the supernatural.
CREST OF THE STARS
An elegant space opera based on a series of popular sci-fi Japanese novels. Set in an extremely detailed futuristic universe, it follows the adventures of Jinto and Lafiel, who are caught up in the beginnings of a great war. Despite the space war settings, this series is better known for its gritty character development, and isn't one for the action junkies. (Action junkies: see Claymore and Baccano!)
------------4. OTHER THINGS
Besides the weekly meetings, the OAV also holds termly socials at legendary Japanese restaurant Edamame; shopping trips to London; day-long marathons; and possibly Other Stuff, so do speak up if you have ideas.
http://groupspaces.com/oav/ is where you will find all relevant info, including upcoming events and our now-running Caption Competition, to which our OAV Mascot makes the following suggestion as a entry: "Izuru Kira Confesses his Secret Shame. He Once Appeared in an Episode of Dragon Ball Z".
And then there is the untamed wilderness of our forum, which we hope you will help to populate: http://z2.invisionfree.com/Text_Based_Theater/index.php?act=SC&c=11
The committee:
Frances 'F' Weightman, OAV President and force for justice [silverstar1809@yahoo.co.uk]
Duncan Lugton, Treasurer [freedmind@gmail.com]
Janice Heng, Secretary [divisionbyzero@gmail.com]
Alexei Stephenson, President Emeritus
Jonathan Barrett, OAV Mascot, forum admin, and owner of much of our Freshers' Fair stall And General Lord of Awesome.[shadow_mask_sm@hotmail.com]
Kajia Wei, Vice Treasurer (note the absent hyphen) Court Jester, or Shadow Councillor, depending whom you ask

Now for Behinds the Scenes at Fresher's Fair.
As with last year, and as stated above, most of the stuff on the stall belonged to me again.
We tried to tone it down a bit, and this time there was not a giant Optimus Prime (Though I did include a Deluxe Class Animated Soundwave, but for the obvious reason shown below)(alright, so I also smuggled in a Tiny Ghost of Starscream...).
We had two table this year, so one was taken up by books, including many Art Books, Manga (including some of this year's prizes) and our Death Note for Sign Up. Oh yes, the Death Note once again was used, and took many victums again this year.
In fact, this year, we had a Shinigami on the stall... two even! We had good old Ryuk pestering Mikuru in toy form, we had a Lifesize one too on the first day! That's right, we had Chaos Cosplaying as a God of Death. Only from the wrong series. Oh well, close enough.
Here's some glimpses of what the stall looked like... The Toy End Part one. The Toy End Part two. Our Mecha Fanservice Girl. (well My Mecha Fanservice Girl...) Animted Soundwave and Eva Unit 00 play Guitar Heroes. One of our Talented Staff. He's Single Girls... and you can probably tell why... And another sneaky photo of me... This and the previous one were taken by our neighbours, the Photography Soc. They were using my Camera though (with the Macro Lense, so very shallow focus depth).
And a look at our other tab-AGHHH! UnHoly Mother of Cthulhu! Ahhhhh Much Better....
However, due to some.... Postal issues (Curse you Parcel Force, Curse you Customs!), the stall was actually missing some things I intended to have in time and set up. Indeed, even Itsuki(and his Background set up) in the pictures of the stall was only there on the last Afternoon!
Here is some of the... Deleted Content that didn't make the deadline. The Full SOS Brigade Dance Squad, AND THEN SOME! Who Do You Think We Are? We're the Oxford Anime Soc! Seriously, that Gundam Action Base is awesome...
Alas, I only got them Friday Morning.... and only had time to open Itsuki before my afternoon shift.
Also, extra! Dragon Half Manga!
Well see you friday.... Tomorrow even.... And remember...
You Don't Stand...
Yeah, we'll still be making Abridged Series References...
-Jonathan Barrett,
OAV Mascot, and Mask of Nyarlathotep
And now for one last extra thing... A TF Wiki Link! Movie Devastator!
