After our migration to Trinity last Friday, this week OAV will be returning to our normal room, the Saskatchewan Room in Exeter College, at 8pm.
I've been asked to point out that if any completists want to catch up on episodes missed at previous meetings, we can always furnish you with copies -- just bring along a reasonably-sized memory stick and ask me during one of the breaks.
Committee member Kajia Wei has expressed interest in coordinating to meet up with anyone who's going to the MCM Expo in London next weekend and wants company. See the messages in our Facebook group.
All the best,
After much to-ing and fro-ing, we think we might have found a room. The OAV meeting tomorrow will, assuming everything goes smoothly, be at Trinity College, in the Danson Room. Again, we'll be meeting outside the college at 8pm. Trinity is on Broad Street, between Balliol and Blackwells.
All the best,
Oxford Anime Vision's first meeting this year will be at on Friday of this week (the 12th) at 8pm in the Saskatchewan Room in Exeter College. Exeter is one of the central colleges, just north of Lincoln and opposite Jesus, on Turl Street (Google Maps). We'll station some people at the college entrance to help anyone unfamiliar with Exeter find the room (if you arrive late you can always ask the porters in the lodge to show you the way).
So, here’s what we’ll be doing. We will get together on Friday evenings to watch anime, starting at 8 o’clock, finishing at 11. We'll then head down to G&D's for discussion and unhealthy late-night ice cream or other confectionery.
Each meeting will have six slots for anime episodes. Five of these slots will be for the series we’re running, which we aim to go through over the course of the year. The sixth slot is there for random episodes: we sometimes use this slot to try out things we might watch next year, and sometimes we just put on a classic which deserves more attention, or something amusingly bad. Or possibly something which I think is a classic deserving more attention and everyone else thinks is amusingly bad.
This year the plan is to watch Darker than Black, Chihayafuru, Steins;Gate, Ouran High School Host Club and Gunslinger Girl. Gunslinger Girl is only 13 episodes long and will finish about halfway through Hilary Term, at which point we'll fill its slot with something else.
We're on Facebook here, and if you use MyAnimeList you can find us here.
All the best,
If you're receiving this email you should either be on Oxford Anime Vision's mailing list from last year, or have signed up to the list at the OUSU Fresher's Fair. If you think you've received this in error or you no longer want to be on our mailing list, please get in touch and I can remove you.
1. Welcome Drinks Tomorrow
We're having a get-together tomorrow night at 8 pm at Freud. Any old or new members are welcome, and if you're new this should be a good chance to meet some more of us in an atmosphere that isn't as frantic as the Fresher's Fair. Freud is a slightly eccentric cafe-bar on Walton Street at number 119, just beyond Oxford University Press, in a building which looks like an ancient Greek temple.
2. Millennium Actress Screening on Monday
Magdalen Film Society, who are not us but are generally good people, are showing Satoshi Kon's excellent anime film Millennium Actress (2001) on Monday night, at 7.30 pm, in the Magdalen Auditorium (entrance off Longwall Street), with free wine and snacks. The normal price to get in would be £3, but they're offering a £1 discount for Oxford Anime Vision people (say you're a member when buying your ticket on the door). This might well be the cheapest cinema ticket you buy all year, and I recommend it to you if you're looking for something to do on Monday night.
Oh, and you can find us on Facebook here.
I hope everyone had a good summer!
Fresher's Fair runs Wednesday to Friday next week and we need volunteers to help run the stall. The actual work is fairly simple: answering questions that people have, handing out flyers to those that are interested and just generally convincing people to sign up.
The Fair runs 10:00-17:30 on Wed and Thur, and 10:00-16:00 on Friday. If you're interested, contact me and include the day(s) and time(s) you can help. Once I've filled it in I'll email round a timetable to all those that volunteer.
Just a quick reminder, the AnimeSoc meeting tonight is in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College at 8pm. We'll be having our meetings there for the rest of the term, unless we let you know otherwise.
Anyways, I hope you all have a great evening... not that I'm hoping the rest of your day is horrible of course.
Bye for now,
I hope that you've all had a great Easter break, and are now getting settled back into life in Oxford. Our first meeting is this Friday at 8pm at Exeter College, in the Saskatchewan Room.
Note that we only have this room on the condition that no food or drink is to be consumed while we're there, so please refrain from bringing any.
As always, we'll be heading to G&Ds afterwards, and anyone who wants to is welcome to come along.
Looking forward to seeing you all again,
Greetings, loyal members of the OAV.
It is I, Alexei Stephenson, President of years past, long thought banished beyond the limits of dark space after an epic war that shook the galaxy. However, today I return with a special surprise announcement. Selina and I have chosen to keep this secret up until now, but after extensive discussion, we decided it would be fair to let you all know with enough advance warning to get used to the coming changes.
Namely, due to our respective changing circumstances, Selina will unfortunately be unable to continue as OAV President from Trinity this year. On the other hand, I am going to return, and reclaim the post that once was mine. That's right, starting from Trinity, I will be President once again.
And I have some new ideas. You see, I've had ample time since we made this decision to consider ways in which the OAV can be improved. Accordingly, Trinity will see changes including, but not limited, to the following:
- We will be running joint events with the Assassins' Guild. Cosplay will be mandatory, as will the use of special attack names in battle (where costumes permit).
- In light of the soon-to-be-introduced age restrictions for OAV membership, there will now be a hentai slot. Suggestions for the slot first series/OVAs are welcome.
- In the event of projector malfunction, we will attempt religious ceremonies from a variety of faiths, as a group, to attempt to restore it to working order. Members will be able to opt out, except where doing so would reduce the congregation below the required minimum. The current list of faiths to try includes Orthodox and Reformed Judaism, five denominations of Christianity, Tibetan Buddhism, Voodoo, Theosophy, Celtic Druidry, the Elysian Mysteries and the Cult of Veil.
- All female Committee members will be required to wear miniskirts (as a form of Japanese cultural expression).
- In order to redress the unfortunate gender imbalance within the Committee, we will be inviting more female members to join.
- A special, mandatory costume shall be selected for the OAV Mascot based on a vote.
More of the same, I'm afraid. As usual, the meeting is on Friday, at 8pm in Lecture Room 1 in Christ Church College. I hope you all have a great time!
Also, a quick reminder that it's one week until the Randomthon, which will be a week on Saturday (so 7th week, not this week) from 2-6pm in Exeter College.
See you all around,
Just a quick reminder that our meeting is tomorrow, same time and place as always. Christ Church College, Lecture Room 1, at 8pm.
Also, remember that our randomthon is on Saturday 3rd March in Exeter College, and the Geek Quiz is tonight at 8pm in St. John's College, North Quad Lecture Room. To those of you going, have a great time!
See you all soon,
So, Friday marks the halfway point of this academic year, and I hope you've all been having a great time so far. The meeting is as usual at 8pm in Lecture Room 1 in Christ Church College.
Thursday 16th February (that's next week) is the termly Geek Quiz at St. John's College, starting at 8pm. This is courtesy of the Oxford Doctor Who Society, and promises to be a great night. If it's anything like the times I've been, you're in for a treat.
Saturday 3rd March (7th Week) is our Randomthon. You know the random slot we have at the end of the session? It's basically like that, FOREVER! Well, from 2-6pm at Exeter College anyway. It's basically for us to get an idea what we might want to watch next year, so I'd really recommend coming along. If you have any sugestions for episodes to watch then, feel free to chat to the committee about it.
That's all for now, I'll see you all tomorrow.
Bye for now,
I hope you've all had a great week, and for those of you who came on the shopping trip last weekend, I hope you all had as great a time as I did.
Just a quick reminder to say that the meeting is in its usual time and place. Lecture Room 1, Christ Church College, Tomorrow at 8pm. I hope you can all make it!
See you there,
Hey everyone, welcome back!
Sorry about the short notice, but just so you all know, AnimeSoc is back on this term, same time same place. That is Fridays at 8pm, in Lecture Room 1, Christ Church College. Our first meeting is this Friday, 20th January. I hope you can all make it!
We also have a shopping trip planned for Saturday 28th January, so if you could put that date into your diaries and let us know if you're interested in coming. More about it at the meeting, but I can tell you from personal experience that it's a great day out, and well worth considering.
Again, apologies for the short notice, and see you all tomorrow!
I hope you've all enjoyed AnimeSoc this term. This Friday is the last meeting of term. If any of you haven't paid your membership fees for this year yet, Friday is the due date, so please bring in £7 if you haven't already.
The only other thing that needs flagging up is the issue of a meeting room for next term. If you could all check with your colleges to see if they have a suitable room, that would be great. It would need to be able to seat all of us, have a projector and speakers, and ideally be free. Exeter, Christchurch, Oriel and Balliol should all have rooms that can be used for free by college members, so if any of you are from from those colleges, you should see if you can get one of those.
If you find anything regarding rooms, please either tell us at the meeting, or email me.
I hope you all have a great 8th Week. We're almost there!
Okay, the votes are in, and it's been decided that the social will be on Friday of 7th week. That's the 25th November to those of us more in tune with the dates of the outside world. It's being held at 6pm at Noodle Nation on Gloucester Green. Please do try to be on time, as we'll be having the meeting not long afterwards.
This week's meeting is as usual. Today at 8pm, in Lecture Room 1 at Christ Church College. As always, we're looking forward to seeing you there.
Bye for now,
We're planning to have an AnimeSoc social at some point within the next two weeks. We've set up an online poll to see when people are free, so if you could take the time to fill in the times when you're free, that would really help. Once we've decided on a date and time, we'll let you know the details.
Here's a link to the poll: http://doodle.com/n8i3txtfegiw35vw
We're also planning a film night, so if anyone has any suggestions, let us know at the meeting and we'll see what people want to watch.
As usual, the meeting is on Friday, at 8pm in Lecture Room 1 at Christ Church College.
Looking forward to seeing you all there,
Just a quick reminder, we'll be meeting on Friday, same time and place as last time. That is, 8pm in Lecture Room 1 at Christ Church College. This will be where we plan to meet for the rest of the term, so unless you get an email saying otherwise, that's where we'll be each week.
I won't be sending out these reminders weekly any more, but watch this space for any further news about socials and whatever other fun stuff we may have planned.
Also, just as a quick reminder to those who haven't payed their fees yet, it's £7 for the whole year, to be payed by the end of term.
Hoping to see you all there,
Well, it's coming up to the end of third week, and you all know what that means. It's AnimeSoc's third meeting of the year. I hear this week's episode of Madoka is not to be missed, so make sure you come along.
Things will be a little different this week, as we've had to change rooms. We're still starting at 8pm on Friday, but this time the venue will be Lecture Room 1 at Christ Church College. This is where the meetings will be held for the rest of this term, so make a note of that if you haven't already. If you come along a little early, there should be someone around to show you to the room.
Also note that we'll be collecting fees over the next couple of weeks. It costs £7 for the whole year, so if anyone planning to stick with us for the long haul could bring that in, that would be great.
As per usual, we'll be heading off to G&D's afterwards, which we're now just over the road from thanks to the room change.
That'll be all for now. We're looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow.
It was great to see you all at AnimeSoc last week, and we hope you're enjoying the series we're running. We're coming up to our second meeting of the year, same time and place as last time. That is, Friday 21st October, 8pm in the Saskatchewan Room in Exeter college. As always, we'll be heading off to G&D's afterwards, so don't miss out on that.
We're looking forward to seeing you all again, and we hope you have a great time.
See you tomorrow,
