Beginning-of-Year Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Sunday, 29th September 2013 @ 10:29pm

Dear all,

I hope you've all had a good summer! I spent the last few months battering away at an intractable thesis problem and watching a lot of Fist of the North Star. These two activities may or may not be connected.

Freshers' Fair

Would anyone like to help staff OAV's stall at this year's Freshers' Fair? It's a fairly undemanding job: chatting to any freshers who're interested, answering their questions and encouraging them to sign up. You can usually snatch a quick break to wander round the rest of the Fair, too, if you fancy.  Matthew, John and I will be doing shifts and we won't be abandoning people to run the stall on their own for long periods of time!

The Fair runs Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of 0th Week – 9/10/11 October – let me know if you want to help out (you can just reply to this email).

New Year Drinks

We'll be having a get-together at Freud (the big neoclassical bar on Walton Street) at 7.30pm on Sunday 13 October. Anyone and everyone is welcome to this – members from last year, people who are just on our mailing list, and freshers – come along to catch up, chat about anime and see in the new academic year!

The Coming Year at OAV

After much headscratching and horse-trading our starting lineup this year looks like this:

  • Big O
  • Mawaru Penguindrum
  • Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun
  • Shin Sekai Yori
  • Black Lagoon (season 1)

We hope this will be an entertaining (if sometimes odd) lineup. Assuming our room bookings work out (...watch this space) we'll be meeting on Fridays at 8pm just like last year.

I look forward to seeing many of you again in the next few weeks!

Best wishes,

Daniel

Week 7 Social

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 3rd June 2013 @ 10:47am

Dear all,

I hope everyone's well and coping with Trinity!

This term's social will be a meal this Friday, at Edamame (on Holywell St). We'll meet at 5:30 outside the restaurant.

All best,

Daniel

Film Night, 18th May, 7.30pm

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Tuesday, 30th April 2013 @ 8:14am

Dear all,

OAV will be holding a film night on Saturday of fourth week, the 18th of May. We'll use the usual Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College, but start at 7.30pm rather than 8.

Provisionally, we're planning to show Paprika (2006) and Redline (2009). Paprika is a mind-bending dream-diving thriller directed by the late Satoshi Kon, and Redline is an over-the-top racing story, Takeshi Koike's directorial debut.

Best wishes,

Daniel

Trinity Term

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 22nd April 2013 @ 10:37am

Dear all,

Trinity Term is upon us, with its warmer weather (hooray) and exams (damn).

Starting this Friday, Oxford Anime Vision will be meeting as usual in the Saskatchewan Room, at Exeter, at 8pm. We'll be at Exeter all eight Fridays of Trinity Term. We'll be wrapping up this year's batch of anime, and perhaps even more importantly we might find time to finish off Garzey's Wing, too... I look forward to seeing you there.

Best wishes,

Daniel

End of term notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Saturday, 2nd March 2013 @ 1:26pm

Dear all,

We're going to have a last-minute OAV social tomorrow night, a meal at Noodle Nation (on Gloucester Green) at 6pm.

The last meeting this term will be Friday, Saskatchewan Room at Exeter at 8pm, as usual.

All best,

Daniel

Wk 6 Notices: (1) OAV at Trinity; (2) Randomthon

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Tuesday, 19th February 2013 @ 10:38pm

Dear all,

OAV at Trinity -- this week only

A reminder that this week -- and this week only -- we're in the Danson Room at Trinity College, at 8pm on Friday.

Randomthon

The day after we'll be trialling a bunch of first episodes in our yearly Randomthon, which will help us build a shortlist of titles to show next year. (Because apparently 'All ninety-two episodes of Mazinger Z in their shoddy bootleg-subtitle'd glory' isn't actually an acceptable viewing programme for some people. Philistines.) This is a good chance to get a quick taste of a bunch of shows which may or may not be any good, and have some input on next year's programme.

The Randomthon will run for four hours from 2pm to 6pm in the usual place, the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College, next Saturday. Come and go as you please if you want to join in but don't have all that time free. And if you have even more time free, some of us will probably go for pizza afterwards...

All best,

Daniel

Randomthon Advance Notice

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 11th February 2013 @ 9:16pm

Dear all,

We sometimes use the random final slot in the evening to try out the first episode of an anime the committee thinks we might show next year. As a supplement to this, we meet once a year and blast through the first episodes of a bunch of extra possible titles in a 'randomthon'.

This year's randomthon will be on Saturday February 23, from 2pm to 6pm, in the usual place (Saskatchewan Room, Exeter College).

Anyone who can come will be very welcome -- your opinions on what we show will help us begin to sketch out next year's programme. It's quite a long session so do feel free to come and go as you'd like, if you'd like to attend but can only make part of it.

--

The meeting this Friday will be at 8pm, in the Saskatchewan Room as normal.

All best,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

Shopping Trip

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 28th January 2013 @ 11:07pm

Dear all,

Maintaining OAV's proud tradition of long-term planning and sufficient notice, we've decided that we're going on a shopping trip to London -- next Saturday (February 2nd).

This is something we try to do every year, and it involves catching an early bus to London and visiting a bunch of shops which sell manga and/or relevant anime/manga merchandise. Shopping aside, it's a good chance to socialise and escape the Oxford bubble. The projected base cost besides anything you buy might be around £25 (bus ticket, Tube travel and lunch).

We're planning to hash out the fine details (by which I think I mean: when and where to catch the bus) at the OAV meeting this Friday, which will be at 8pm in the Saskatchewan Room. So in plenty of time for Saturday morning. In the meantime, if you're interested in coming do email me so we can estimate numbers.

All best,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 14th January 2013 @ 10:37pm

Dear all,

Happy New Year -- I hope everyone had a good break.

This term OAV will be on Fridays at 8pm, in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College every week, except for 6th week (Friday 22nd February). I look forward to seeing you this Friday!

Best wishes,

Daniel

Week 8

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Wednesday, 28th November 2012 @ 8:23pm

Dear all,

With term ending this week, what better way could there be to celebrate than OAV's Friday night meeting?* Which will be in Exeter's Saskatchewan Room at 8pm, as usual.

All best,
Daniel

* Don't answer that.

Week 7 Meeting + Social

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 19th November 2012 @ 10:42pm

Dear all,

This week: 8pm, Saskatchewan Room, Exeter College... except that it's also really time for us to have a social, so if you're free earlier on Friday do join us at 5.30pm at Edamame to get some food before the meeting proper. For anyone new to Oxford who hasn't encountered Edamame yet, it's an idiosyncratic Japanese restaurant on Holywell Street, opposite New College.

All the best,

Daniel
OAV Secretary (who will definitely remember to plug his laptop in this week)

Week 6

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 12th November 2012 @ 9:34pm

Dear all,

This week is OAV's second and last migration away from Exeter this term. We'll be in the Danson Room at Trinity College from 8pm on Friday. As last time, the porters will (we hope!) be happy to let people into the college and point them towards the room.

All the best,

Daniel

Week 5

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Thursday, 8th November 2012 @ 9:19pm

OAV this week will be at the usual time, 8pm, in the usual place, Exeter College's Saskatchewan Room.

Sorry for the late email; this is the fault of people 600 years ago having difficult-to-read handwriting.

Week 4 Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 29th October 2012 @ 9:00am

Dear all,

I hope those who experienced the majesty of Garzey's Wing on Friday night have recovered sufficiently over the weekend. This week we'll be in the Saskatchewan Room in Exeter again, but -- just to keep everyone on their toes -- we'll be starting a quarter of an hour later, at 8.15pm. We'll probably show a shorter random episode in the final slot.

As announced on Friday, we'll start collecting membership fees this week. The membership fee this year will be £5 (less than last year!) and we'll be accepting fees for several weeks, so if you don't have it on you next week that's fine. The money is spent on the stall and flyers for next year's fresher's fair (usually the biggest single cost each year), and on subsidising other things for members (such as travel if we run a London trip). We also maintain a reserve to pay for a room in an emergency if we can't find anything free.

All the best,

Daniel

Week 3 Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 22nd October 2012 @ 1:28pm

Dear all,

After our migration to Trinity last Friday, this week OAV will be returning to our normal room, the Saskatchewan Room in Exeter College, at 8pm.

--

I've been asked to point out that if any completists want to catch up on episodes missed at previous meetings, we can always furnish you with copies -- just bring along a reasonably-sized memory stick and ask me during one of the breaks.

--

Committee member Kajia Wei has expressed interest in coordinating to meet up with anyone who's going to the MCM Expo in London next weekend and wants company. See the messages in our Facebook group.

All the best,

Daniel

Meeting Tomorrow

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Thursday, 18th October 2012 @ 9:51pm

Dear all,

After much to-ing and fro-ing, we think we might have found a room. The OAV meeting tomorrow will, assuming everything goes smoothly, be at Trinity College, in the Danson Room. Again, we'll be meeting outside the college at 8pm. Trinity is on Broad Street, between Balliol and Blackwells.

All the best,

Daniel Sawyer,
OAV Secretary

Oxford Anime Vision -- First Meeting

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Tuesday, 9th October 2012 @ 11:00am

Hi,

Oxford Anime Vision's first meeting this year will be at on Friday of this week (the 12th) at 8pm in the Saskatchewan Room in Exeter College. Exeter is one of the central colleges, just north of Lincoln and opposite Jesus, on Turl Street (Google Maps). We'll station some people at the college entrance to help anyone unfamiliar with Exeter find the room (if you arrive late you can always ask the porters in the lodge to show you the way).

--

So, here’s what we’ll be doing. We will get together on Friday evenings to watch anime, starting at 8 o’clock, finishing at 11.  We'll then head down to G&D's for discussion and unhealthy late-night ice cream or other confectionery.

Each meeting will have six slots for anime episodes.  Five of these slots will be for the series we’re running, which we aim to go through over the course of the year.  The sixth slot is there for random episodes: we sometimes use this slot to try out things we might watch next year, and sometimes we just put on a classic which deserves more attention, or something amusingly bad. Or possibly something which I think is a classic deserving more attention and everyone else thinks is amusingly bad.

This year the plan is to watch Darker than Black, Chihayafuru, Steins;Gate, Ouran High School Host Club and Gunslinger Girl. Gunslinger Girl is only 13 episodes long and will finish about halfway through Hilary Term, at which point we'll fill its slot with something else.

We're on Facebook here, and if you use MyAnimeList you can find us here.

All the best,

Daniel Sawyer
OAV Secretary

Welcome Drinks Tomorrow / Film on Monday

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Saturday, 6th October 2012 @ 12:03pm

Hi,

If you're receiving this email you should either be on Oxford Anime Vision's mailing list from last year, or have signed up to the list at the OUSU Fresher's Fair. If you think you've received this in error or you no longer want to be on our mailing list, please get in touch and I can remove you.

--

1. Welcome Drinks Tomorrow

We're having a get-together tomorrow night at 8 pm at Freud. Any old or new members are welcome, and if you're new this should be a good chance to meet some more of us in an atmosphere that isn't as frantic as the Fresher's Fair. Freud is a slightly eccentric cafe-bar on Walton Street at number 119, just beyond Oxford University Press, in a building which looks like an ancient Greek temple.

--

2. Millennium Actress Screening on Monday

Magdalen Film Society, who are not us but are generally good people, are showing Satoshi Kon's excellent anime film Millennium Actress (2001) on Monday night, at 7.30 pm, in the Magdalen Auditorium (entrance off Longwall Street), with free wine and snacks. The normal price to get in would be £3, but they're offering a £1 discount for Oxford Anime Vision people (say you're a member when buying your ticket on the door). This might well be the cheapest cinema ticket you buy all year, and I recommend it to you if you're looking for something to do on Monday night.

--

Oh, and you can find us on Facebook here.

Best wishes,
Daniel Sawyer

Fresher's Fair Volunteers

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Saturday, 29th September 2012 @ 9:48am

Dear all,

I hope everyone had a good summer!

Fresher's Fair runs Wednesday to Friday next week and we need volunteers to help run the stall. The actual work is fairly simple: answering questions that people have, handing out flyers to those that are interested and just generally convincing people to sign up.

The Fair runs 10:00-17:30 on Wed and Thur, and 10:00-16:00 on Friday. If you're interested, contact me and include the day(s) and time(s) you can help. Once I've filled it in I'll email round a timetable to all those that volunteer.

All best,

Daniel

AnimeSoc Meeting Place

E-mail sent by Christopher Newell, Friday, 4th May 2012 @ 8:41am

Hey everyone,

Just a quick reminder, the AnimeSoc meeting tonight is in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College at 8pm.  We'll be having our meetings there for the rest of the term, unless we let you know otherwise.

Anyways, I hope you all have a great evening... not that I'm hoping the rest of your day is horrible of course.

Bye for now,

Chris
