Michaelmas Term Social

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Saturday, 22nd November 2014 @ 10:41am

Dear all,

Week 7 is upon us—time flies when you're having work—and so next Friday before the main OAV meeting we'll have a social, in the form of a meal at Opium Den (a restaurant on George Street), at 6 PM. If you would like to come to this then let us know, either by emailing Tom or on the Facebook group.

The main meeting will be at 8 PM in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College as usual.

Best wishes,

Daniel

Week 5 & onwards

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 10th November 2014 @ 4:51pm

Dear all,

As per the previous email, all the remaining meetings this term will be in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College at 8 PM on Fridays as normal. For the rest of the term I will only send out emails if something else is happening as well. Speaking of which, here's some advance notice that in week 7 we will probably have our termly social, a leisurely meal before the meeting on Friday evening.

Towards the end of the term, probably in weeks 6, 7 and 8, we will collect this year's membership fee. This won't be more than £5, and most of the money goes to pay for booking a stall at next year's Freshers' Fair. We will spend any surplus on events that happen this year.

Best wishes,

Daniel,
OAV Secretary

Week 3 & film night advance warning

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Sunday, 26th October 2014 @ 6:20pm

Dear all,

Next Friday OAV will meet at 8 PM in Lecture Room B at Queen's College, where we were for our first meeting back in week 1. This will be the last time this term that we use Queen's College. Meetings in weeks 4 to 8 will all be in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College.

Another date for your diary: we will have a film screening on the evening of Saturday 8 November—the Saturday at the end of week 4—in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter from 6 to 10 PM, which will hopefully give us enough time to show two films with a break in the middle for people to stretch their legs. We have a few ideas about what to show but will welcome suggestions; since this is the beginning of the year we might go for fairly accessible material. We'll work out what we're showing with certainty by the time of next week's meeting.

Best wishes,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

Week 2

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Wednesday, 22nd October 2014 @ 10:28am

Dear all,

I hope everyone has survived the first week of term.

As per the termcard (which I've attached to this email again) we will not be at Queen's College this week. Instead this Friday we will be meeting in the Saskatchewan Room in Exeter College, which, you will be pleased to hear, has a bigger screen and speakers. The meeting time will be the same: 8 PM.

Exeter College is another central college. The entrance is on the east side of Turl Street, almost opposite the entrance to Jesus College on the other side of Turl Street. We will try to make sure someone is stationed at the college entrance to guide people in, like last week. Exeter tend to lock their front door fairly soon after 8, so if you come significantly late you may need to ring the college doorbell and ask the porter to point you to the Saskatchewan Room.

Purists (you know who you are) will be pleased to hear that we definitely have a copy of Tsuritama with Japanese audio and English subtitles this time.

Best wishes,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

Week 1

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 13th October 2014 @ 3:40pm

Dear all,

I attach a copy of Oxford Anime Vision's termcard for this term. We will issue another version when more events are added to it, but for the weekly meetings this should, all being well, remain correct.

This week's meeting will be on Friday at 8PM in Lecture Room B at The Queen's College. Queen's should be easy to find: the main entrance is on the High Street, and it's a large wooden door set in a high stone wall, with a statue underneath a small domed roof above the gate. We will try to make sure that we have someone outside the gate to meet people and also someone around to show people the way to the lecture theatre. If you arrive late then you can ask the porters how to find the room.

Another reminder that we have a Facebook group, and that if you have any questions you should feel free to email and ask them.

Best wishes,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

Welcome/Welcome Back!

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Friday, 10th October 2014 @ 10:50pm

Dear all,

Welcome, if you're new, and welcome back if you're not! If you're on this mailing list and you don't think you should be—welcome, please let me know, and I'll remove you.

Sunday night

We're having a beginning-of-year gathering at Freud, a bar in a big neoclassical building on Walton Street, here, from 8pm onwards on Sunday. All are welcome: current members, freshers and anyone who just happens to be on the mailing list. Some of the committee members should be around to see in the new academic year and have a chat.

Meetings this term

On the Fridays of weeks 2 and 4–8 we will meet at 8pm in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College, as usual. We couldn't get the Saskatchewan for the Fridays of weeks 1 and 3 so we're still working on the places and times for those meetings (if you see my hair prematurely greying, it's not caused by the DPhil thesis, but by hunting for OAV rooms...). As soon as we have something sorted out I will issue a proper termcard. We will also try to organise a film showing this term, and we usually go out to eat together in the evening before the meeting in week 7, but we'll send details of those round nearer the time.

Towards the end of Michaelmas term—once everyone's had a chance to decide whether or not to stick around—we will collect a membership fee. We haven't decided this year's rate yet but it's usually around £5 for the whole year. The money covers the costs of next year's Freshers' Fair; surplus may be used to subsidise anything we do this year.

Lineup

Our opening lineup this year is as follows: Tiger & Bunny, Princess Jellyfish, Shiki, Yamato 2199 and Tsuritama. I will try to remember to post more about each one of these in the Facebook group next week. (Please feel free to join the Facebook group if you want to!)

Meeting format

Our normal meetings consist of one episode from each of the five titles we are watching followed by an episode from something we're not watching as a kind of taster. This last slot is often used as a space to showcase something good or test something which we might watch in full next year; suggestions for it are welcome. We show everything with Japanese audio and English subtitles.

If you have any other questions get in touch!

Best wishes,

Daniel,
OAV Secretary

New Year Update

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Tuesday, 30th September 2014 @ 9:25pm

Dear all,

I hope you've had a good summer! OAV will be returning, all being well, on the Friday of the first week of term, Friday 17 October. If anyone has free time on Wednesday 8, Thursday 9, or Friday 10 October that they fancy burning by helping out on our stall at Freshers' Fair, let me know.

Like last year, we're planning on having beginning-of-year drinks from 8pm onwards at Freud on Walton Street on the Sunday at the end of 0th week, Sunday 12 October. As usual we'll probably have lots of new people there but returning members will be very welcome!

If anyone's on this mailing list but doesn't want to be on it anymore, do email to say so and I'll take you off.

All best,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

Week 7 Social

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Saturday, 7th June 2014 @ 11:20am

Dear all,

I hope everyone is well. We'll be having a social as usual before the meeting in week 7 i.e., next Friday, a meal at Noodle Nation at 5:30 PM. I'll make a booking for us, so I would like to know numbers by Wednesday or Thursday next week. If you would like to come to the meal please either reply to this email to let me know, or say so in response to the post I will shortly post on the Facebook group.

Best wishes,

Daniel

Week 3 Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 12th May 2014 @ 7:26pm

Dear all,

This is just a reminder that this week, and this week only, OAV will be meeting in the Danson Room at Trinity College, at the usual time of 8 PM. This is the room we had trouble with last term; John and I are hoping to visit it the day before to confirm that we can make the A/V setup work.

One other longer-term thing to note: we are provisionally planning to hold this term's social on Friday of seventh week, that's Friday 13 June, probably at 5:30 PM.

All best,

Daniel

Trinity Term

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 28th April 2014 @ 9:27pm

Dear all,

OAV resumes this Friday! This term we will be in the usual place at the usual time—the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College at 8pm—every Friday except Friday of week 3, that's May 16th. That day we'll be in the Danson Room at Trinity College instead (and this time we'll move heaven and earth to make sure we can get the AV setup there working properly!). I will do my level best to remember to send an email round that week about the change of location, too.

All best,

Daniel

Week 7 Notice: Social

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 3rd March 2014 @ 7:02pm

Dear all,

Just a quick reminder that this week is the time for our termly social. We'll be eating at Edamame, on Holywell Street, before the meeting this Friday. We'll be meeting at 5.30pm outside the restaurant.

All best,

Daniel

Week 6 Notices: Randomthon & Social

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Saturday, 22nd February 2014 @ 5:41pm

Dear all,

Two quick reminders:

1. Next Saturday (1 March) we'll be showing a bunch of first episodes from titles we're considering showing next year. 3–6pm in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter. Everyone's very welcome whether or not you've been at regular meetings, as your opinions on what we show will be helpful! Feel free to turn up late or leave early if you need to. Some of us might go for a meal afterwards; this will probably be arranged via the Facebook group.

2. This term's social (also a meal...) will happen before the meeting on Friday 7 February (Friday of week 7).

All best,

Daniel

Week 3 Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Sunday, 2nd February 2014 @ 9:58pm

Dear all,

Last Friday: we had an unsolvable audio problem, so we didn't show anything. Sorry! The good news is that if you missed the meeting you didn't miss anything; the bad news is that there'll be fewer random first episodes at the end of meetings as we now have more to catch up on with our main titles.

Next Friday: we'll be in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter at 8pm as usual (and this will be our time & place for the rest of this term).

Social: this term's social will be a meal before the meeting in week 7, on Friday 7 March.

Randomthon: sometimes the 'random' first episodes we show at the end of meetings are trial runs for titles we're considering watching next year. Every Hilary we have an extra session at which we watch a bunch more first episodes from things we might watch next year. This is usually good fun, and we'd like anyone who wants to to come so that we can have your feedback on what we're considering showing. Assuming the room is free for booking, it'll probably be 3–6pm at the weekend in week 5 or week 6, but we have some flexibility on the date so there's a poll in the Facebook group; if you have a preference, please vote/comment.

All best,

Daniel

Meetings in Hilary Term

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Sunday, 19th January 2014 @ 8:17pm

Dear all,

I hope everyone's been well since last term!

This coming term we will be meeting in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College at 8pm on Fridays, just like last term, starting next Friday, 24 January.

Except on the Friday of week 2 (31 January), when we'll be in the Danson Room in Trinity College (this is where we met for the first week of last term; I'll send directions around again next week).

All best,

Daniel

Week 7 Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 25th November 2013 @ 9:52pm

Dear all,

Pizza on Saturday

We'll be going to Pizza Express after the film screenings on Saturday (let this email serve as a last reminder about those, too!). If you're planning to come, please let me know by Thursday evening, as I'd like to book a table for in advance. (Send me an email, or comment on our Facebook group.)

Social: Friday of Week 8, 5.30

We'll also have a social (read: a meal) before the meeting in week 8, on Friday 6 December. We'll be going to Edamame, the idiosyncratic Japanese restaurant on Holywell Street opposite New College; meet outside the restaurant at 5.30. For this you won't need to let anyone know you're coming in advance, but you may need to be prepared to queue outside.

All best,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Tuesday, 19th November 2013 @ 4:46pm

Dear all,

Membership Fees

We're now reaching the point in the year when we'll collect a membership fee. Like last year (no inflation!), the membership fee will be £5 for the year. Each year's fees pay for the cost of renting a table from OUSU at next year's Freshers' Fair, and for printing materials for the fair.

We'll start collecting membership fees this Friday, but we'll have the society monies and the OAV record book around at meetings for the next few weeks, so if you don't have £5 on you this Friday you can bring it later in the term.

Films

As a reminder: we'll be watching a couple of films not at night but on the afternoon of Saturday 30 November (the Saturday at the end of week 7). We'll be in the Saskatchewan Room as usual, starting at 3pm. We'll be watching Jin-Roh followed by The Garden of Words. If you just want to catch The Garden of Words, you can turn up at 5pm. You're very welcome to come regardless of whether you've been able to make our weekly meetings. We'll probably go for pizza afterwards.

All best,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

Films, and Other Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 4th November 2013 @ 8:36pm

FILMS: 3PM, SATURDAY 30TH NOVEMBER

We were trying to sort out this term's film night and it turned into more of a film... afternoon. The plan is to show Jin-Roh followed by The Garden of Words on Saturday 30th November, starting at 3pm in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter (the usual room). We should finish around 6pm and will probably then go for pizza, or something (details to follow).

Jin-Roh is a thriller set in an alternative-history 1950s Japan; it was directed by Hiroyuki Okiura and came out in 1999. Expect sombre intrigue and also body armour. The Garden of Words is the latest short(ish) film directed by Makoto Shinkai. Expect romance, ridiculously lush background art, and also feet. We'll probably start TGoW at around 5pm, so anyone who would like to come but really doesn't want to watch Jin-Roh should turn up at that time.

We'll try to have a film night in Hilary and maybe one in Trinity too, possibly at different times to give more people the chance to make it to at least some.

SOCIAL: ADVANCE NOTICE

We'll probably have an OAV social meal (probably at Edamame) in the evening before this term's final meeting (on December 6th).

OTHER NOTICES

This week's meeting will be at 8pm in the Saskatchewan Room as usual.

The porters at Exeter have asked me to remind everyone not to bring food into the Saskatchewan Room; to which I'll add the remark that finding a college with a suitable room which they'll let us use for free, like Exeter does, is quite hard -- so please don't damage OAV's relationship with them!

All best,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

Second Meeting Details

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Wednesday, 23rd October 2013 @ 10:42pm

Dear all,

I hope this finds you well. This week's meeting will be on Friday, at 8pm, as last week, but in a different place: the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College. We will be meeting in the Saskatchewan Room for all the other weeks of this term too.

Returning members will know where this is from last year. For everyone else: Exeter College is in the same central part of the city as Trinity, where we were last week. Exeter's entrance is a big wooden door on the eastern side of Turl Street, the northernmost door on that side of the street, here. (Lincoln College's entrance is also on that side of the street, but further south.) Like last week, we'll try to have someone stationed outside the door to point the way for you.

Other Notes

I've had queries about a few things, which I thought I'd address here.

1. If you missed the first meeting you're still very welcome to come to the second. Unlike some university societies, we're very relaxed about attendance.

2. A couple of people asked about last week's sixth 'random' episode: although we usually show the first episode of a different series every week in that slot, last week's was a one-shot, one-off story which has no sequel -- at least, not yet: a sequel OVA has been announced but hasn't yet been made.

3. We're open to suggestions for titles we could show the first ep of in that sixth slot, which is intended to showcase anime in all its bewildering variety. We also sometimes use it to trial things which we might consider showing in full next year. Or indeed later this year, because we will have a single-cours open space in our schedule once the first season of Black Lagoon finishes.

Best wishes,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

First Meeting Details

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Wednesday, 16th October 2013 @ 10:40pm

Dear all,

This Friday

As a reminder, our first meeting will be this Friday, starting at 8pm, in the Danson Room at Trinity College. Trinity is fairly easy to find: the college is to the east of Balliol and its entrance is on the north side of Broad Street, around the position of the lurid green dot in this image. We'll try to station someone there with the small banner thing we were using at Freshers' Fair as a marker. The porters in the Trinity lodge should be able to point you towards the Danson Room, as should anyone who was a member last year.

At this meeting we'll be watching five first episodes from five series we'll be watching, plus an episode of something we won't be watching any more of this year (OAV's traditional 'random' episode) to round off the night. At some point the committee will probably briefly introduce themselves. At the end we'll probably head down to the Abingdon Road G&Ds for late-night ice cream and conversation.

Since several freshers asked about this on Sunday evening: we usually show things with Japanese audio and English subtitles. It's unlikely that we'll show anything dubbed this year (because we showed Garzey's Wing dubbed last year and watching that two years running would be far, far too much of a good thing).

The Seven Fridays After That

All our other meetings this term will be in the Saskatchewan Room in Exeter College. I'll probably send another email about that during next week, but after that I'll try not to clog your inbox unless we have something one-off to pass on.

All best,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

Oxford Anime Vision Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Saturday, 12th October 2013 @ 9:07am

Dear all,

Welcome if you're new and welcome back if you're not!

--

Tomorrow Evening

We'll be gathering informally at Freud, a bar in a big neoclassical building on Walton Street (number 119), from 7.30pm onwards tomorrow. All are welcome: current members, freshers and for that matter anyone who just happens to be on the mailing list. A bunch of the committee members should be around to welcome in the new academic year and have a chat.

--

Meetings this term

This term we will meet on Friday evenings starting at 8pm as usual. We will be in the Danson Room at Trinity College in week 1 (Friday 18 October) but we will be in our normal location, the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College, for the rest of the term, weeks 2 to 8. In the early weeks of the term we'll station people at the college entrance to point you in the right direction.

Towards the end of Michaelmas term -- once everyone's had a chance to decide whether or not to stick around -- we will collect a membership fee. We haven't decided this year's rate yet but it's usually around £5 for the whole year. (The main use for the money is renting a table at the next year's Freshers' Fair and getting stuff printed for it.)

--

You can find our Facebook group here. We'll send all useful information out via this mailing list, but we usually post it to Facebook too, and the Facebook group is also a venue for more casual chat and general snippets of anime news.

Best wishes,

Daniel
OAV Secretary
