News and Announcements

Week 4

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Thursday, 19th May 2016 @ 3:37pm

Dear all,

Just a quick reminder that this week's meeting is in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College at 8 PM tomorrow as normal. (We will be back at The Queen's College in week 5, on Friday 27 May).

Best wishes,

Daniel

NB: different room this week

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Thursday, 12th May 2016 @ 4:20pm

Dear all,

A final reminder that we are NOT in our normal room at Exeter College tomorrow, but rather in Lecture Room A at The Queen's College. (This is the room we used for a couple of weeks in Michaelmas.)

Queen's is located on the north side of the High Street, where the bus stops are, between Queen's Lane to the east and All Souls to the West. Its distinctive entrance is a set of wooden doors up some steps from the pavement, underneath a statue which is itself underneath a kind of domed canopy thing. You can find it on Google Maps at https://goo.gl/maps/mPqTY9csds62, and I attach a picture of the entrance. Some of us will probably gather as a group before going in.

We will probably double up on one of the shows we're watching rather than showing a random first episode in the sixth slot this week, in order to fit everything into the year.

Next week we will be back at Exeter as normal, and then in week 5, the week after next, we will be at Queen's for one last time.

Best wishes,

Daniel

Week 2 Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Sunday, 1st May 2016 @ 5:08pm

Dear all,

Oxford Anime Vision will meet as normal in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College at 8 PM this Friday.

You may remember that we were unable to book the Saskatchewan Room for the Fridays of weeks 3 and 5 (13 and 27 May). We have booked Lecture Room A at the Queen's College for our meetings on those dates. Regulars may remember this room as we used it a few times in Michaelmas term. I will make sure that directions to it are sent out in week 3.

Best wishes,

Daniel

Trinity Term Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Friday, 22nd April 2016 @ 8:24pm

Dear all,

I hope everyone has been well for the last month or so! Trinity Term is upon us and so regular Oxford Anime Vision meetings at 8 PM on Fridays will return starting next Friday. This term we will be in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College every week except for the Fridays of week 3 (13 May) and week 5 (27 May). We haven't sorted out rooms for those two weeks yet but we will let you know as soon as we know where we will be then.

So, for this coming Friday, we will be in the usual room at Exeter at 8 PM. For anyone who needs to catch up or who is keeping track, we will be watching Ping Pong 4, Shirobako 17, Last Exile 18, Baccano 5 and Gankutsuou 17.

In other news, the Phoenix Picturehouse in Oxford is having a season of Ghibli films which will run for most of term (and beyond it), mostly on Saturday afternoons and Monday evenings: you can find the details here.

Best wishes,

Daniel,
OAV Secretary

Social & Film Night

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Tuesday, 1st March 2016 @ 2:14pm

Dear all,

As this is week 7, we will have our termly meal before the meeting this Friday. We don't have a time or place for this yet but if you want to be included let me know by emailing oxanimevision@gmail.com or on the relevant Facebook group post.

This term's film night will happen this coming Sunday, 6 March, starting at 7:30 PM in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College. We will be watching The Cat Returns (2002; dir. Hiroyuki Morita; Studio Ghibli) and something else (to be decided!). As usual, everyone's welcome, even if you haven't been able to get to our regular meetings.

Best wishes,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

Post-Randomthon Meal, 27 Feb

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 22nd February 2016 @ 7:26pm

Dear all,

After the randomthon this Saturday (so at around 1800) we're going to head to Taberu, the rather good Japanese restaurant on Cowley Road, for a meal. If you want to come, let me know by emailing oxanimevision@gmail.com or by commenting on the relevant Facebook post. I've made the booking for twelve and may or may not be able to extend it if we get more interest, so letting me know sooner rather than later would be safest!

Best wishes,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

Randomthon, 27 February

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Sunday, 21st February 2016 @ 12:58pm

Dear all,

The annual OAV randomthon will happen next Saturday, 27 February. This is an event at which we watch the first episodes of a bunch of shows that we’re considering showing in full in future, to help us decide what to watch next year. It’s usually a fun chance to sample a bunch of things and have some input on next year’s scheduling—though we’ll be canvassing opinion online and at regular meetings too. A very much not-final list of the first episodes we’ll be trying this year, not necessarily in this order, is as follows:

Seirei no Moribito
Welcome to the NHK
Planetes
Mushishi
Dennou Coil
Erased
Samurai Champloo
Kino's Journey

Note that these are by no means the only things we’re considering showing next year, as we also have a lot of titles that we’ve tried out over the last few years to think about.

The randomthon will happen this Saturday from 2 PM to 6 PM in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College, and if you have other things on or that is simply too long for you, do feel free to come and go during that time as you please.

We’ve also booked the Saskatchewan Room for a film night on Sunday 6 March, starting at 7.30 PM, though we haven’t decided what to show yet so watch this space.

Best wishes,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

Hilary Term Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Thursday, 14th January 2016 @ 4:31pm

Dear all,

Happy New Year! OAV will return on Friday 22 January, Friday next week. We will be in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College at 8 PM as usual, and, pleasingly, we have been able to book this room for all eight meetings this term. For anyone who is keeping track or wants to catch up, we will be starting this term with the ninth episode of each of the shows we're watching (Rage of Bahamut, Shirobako, Last Exile, Paradise Kiss and Gankutsuou).

While nothing apart from the regular meetings has definitely been arranged for this term yet, Hillary Term is normally when we have the annual 'Randomthon', an attempt to sample and evaluate some of the titles we might watch next year, and we will probably have some kind of meal in week 7 as usual. There may be other events too, so watch this space!

Best wishes,

Daniel

Week 8: Different Room

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Wednesday, 2nd December 2015 @ 9:43pm

Dear all,

This week's OAV meeting will not be in the usual place, but rather in Lecture Room A at Queen's College. Queen's is on the north side of the High Street, here, it has a pillared dome right above its front gate, if that's any help spotting it. Veteran members will remember that this is the room we used sometimes last year too. We will be starting at 8 PM on Friday as usual.

This will be the last meeting of this term. The first of our weekly meetings next year will probably be on Friday 22 January. Many thanks to everyone who's come along this term, whether you were at just one of our events or all of them or somewhere in between!

Best wishes,

Daniel

Week 7 notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Tuesday, 24th November 2015 @ 7:39pm

Dear all,

The end of term is nearly upon us, with just two more of the normal Friday meetings to go.

Social -- this Friday

We normally have a meal before the Friday meeting in week 7 of each term, which is this week. This time the plan is to try Thaikhun, the Thai restaurant on George Street, at 6:30 PM. If you want to be included in the booking, email oxanimevision@gmail.com or comment on the relevant post on the Facebook group.

Mardock Scramble marathon -- this Saturday

This coming Saturday there will be a marathon showing of all three Mardock Scramble films, in Lecture Room A at Queen's College, starting at 10.30 AM. Contact our member Piotr Nosalik (piotr.nosalik@some.ox.ac.uk) for more details. Mardock Scramble is a futuristic action series about a vengeful cyborg. I understand that it contains a considerable amount of violence, some sex and some grotesque imagery, so it's a little outside the run of what we'd show in a normal meeting and viewer discretion is advised, or whatever it is they say in these circumstances.

Best wishes,

Daniel

Week 6 Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Tuesday, 17th November 2015 @ 8:03pm

Dear all,

I hope everyone is well. A few notices:

Membership Fees

This week's main meeting will be happening as normal at 8 PM in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College. This week we will begin collecting membership fees and sign-ups. The fee will be £5 for the whole year. We will do this for several weeks so don't worry if you forget to bring the money this week. Each year's fees are used to pay for the cost of booking space and printing flyers for the Fresher's Fair for the next year; if there is a surplus we will see what we can do for the club with it.

Film Night II

On Sunday we will have this term's second film night, at 6 PM in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter. We will be watching the Cowboy Bebop film, a very cool action-thriller about the effort to stop a terrorist in a battered, rather run-down version of the future, with lovely animation and a fine jazzy soundtrack. Don't worry if you're not familiar with Cowboy Bebop, as the film works fine on its own (and I can say this with confidence as it was the first Cowboy Bebop thing I saw). Note that this is on Sunday, not Saturday like our previous film night.

Mardock Scramble Marathon

On Saturday 28 November—at the end of week 7—there will be a marathon showing of all three Mardock Scramble films, in Lecture Room A at Queen's College, starting at 10.30 AM.

Other notes:

  • We will probably have a meal before the meeting in week 7 (on 27 November), restaurant and time TBA.
  • Remember that the final meeting this term, in week 8 (on Friday 4 December) will be in Lecture Room A at Queen's College, not at Exeter College.

Best wishes,

Daniel

Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Tuesday, 10th November 2015 @ 6:01pm

Dear all,

This week OAV will be meeting at 8 PM in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College as normal.

On the following day, this Saturday, we will run our first film night this term, at 6 PM in the same place. We'll be showing Magnetic Rose and the 2010 Black Rock Shooter one-shot. Everyone's welcome, even if you haven't been able to make our normal meetings.

Then, about a week later, on Sunday 22 November, we'll be meeting again at 6 PM in the same place for our second film night, watching the Cowboy Bebop film.

Longer-term notices:

  • We will probably begin collecting membership fees in week 6's meeting (Friday 20 November), once people have had more time to work out whether they're enjoying what we're showing. The membership fee will be £5 for the whole year.
  • We will probably arrange an OAV meal together before the meeting in week 7 (Friday 27 November).
  • Our final meeting this term, in week 8 (Friday 4 December) will be at Queen's College, in Lecture Room A, because the Saskatchewan Room will be busy.

Best wishes,

Daniel

Film Nights & Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Wednesday, 4th November 2015 @ 10:55pm

Dear all,

I'm pleased to announce that we will have a couple of film nights this term. These will be a chance for us to show stuff that wouldn't fit our regular meetings.

1. Saturday 14 November, in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College, 6 PM onwards

This evening we will be watching two medium-length things: Magnetic Rose, a mind-bending story about a small group of astronauts who discover the gothic, musical remnants of a past obsession (originally from the anthology film Memories); and the 2010 Black Rock Shooter action-drama one-shot, which plays a real-world friendship and a mysterious otherworldly battle off against each other.

2. Sunday 22 November, in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College, 6 PM onwards

This evening we will watch the Cowboy Bebop film Knockin' on Heaven's Door, which is a very cool action piece about the effort to stop a terrorist in a battered, rather run-down version of the future. Don't worry if you're not familiar with Cowboy Bebop, as the film works fine on its own (and I can say this with confidence as it was the first Cowboy Bebop thing I saw). We might throw on a few interesting really short films beforehand too, to warm up.

* * *

We will be meeting in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter this coming Friday as usual. A few notes looking further ahead:

  • We will probably begin collecting membership fees in week 6's meeting (Friday 20 November), once people have had more time to work out whether they're enjoying what we're showing. The membership fee will be £5 for the whole year.
  • We will probably arrange an OAV meal together before the meeting in week 7 (Friday 27 November).
  • Felix Zhou and Piotr Nosalik are organising another movie marathon like the ones they ran last year. Provisionally the plan is to hold it on Saturday 28 November and to watch the Mardock Scramble films. I will let everyone know when it is finalised.
  • Our final meeting this term, in week 8 (Friday 4 December) will be at Queen's College, in Lecture Room A, because the Saskatchewan Room will be busy.

Best wishes,

Daniel

Week 2 Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 19th October 2015 @ 10:03pm

Dear all,

Here are this week's notices for Oxford Anime Vision:

1. This week's meeting will be at 8 PM in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College, just like last week.

2. Cai Jauncey is looking to gauge interest in setting up an Oxford University cosplaying group. Any students who might be up for that are encouraged to contact her at caitlin.jauncey@some.ox.ac.uk.

3. A couple of us are planning a day trip to London to catch these film screenings: http://cinema.alltheanime.com — they're showing Miss Hokusai, Gundam The Origin I and II, the Love Live film and Empire of Corpses — (although I'm not sure I will be staying to see Empire of Corpses myself — and note that Gundam The Origin is a prequel to something, while the Love Live film is the sequel to something else!). If you want to join us, grab a ticket (note that this event is separate from the MCM expo, so a ticket for that won't count) and let me know if you'd like to catch the train down with us.

Best wishes,

Daniel

Oxford Anime Vision Start-of-Year Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Saturday, 10th October 2015 @ 9:19pm

Dear all,

If you signed up to Oxford Anime Vision at Freshers' Fair, welcome to the mailing list! Welcome back to pre-existing members!

A few notices. First, a reminder: we are having an informal get-together at The Mitre, the pub on the High Street, from 7:30 PM onwards tomorrow evening. Everyone is welcome, old and new members alike. For new people, this is a good chance to meet some of the committee and ask any questions you have, or just to relax and talk about anime.

Second, we now know where and when most of our regular weekly meetings will be this term. For the first seven weeks of term we will meet every week on Friday at 8 PM, in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College. This means that the first regular meeting will be there next Friday, 16 October. Exeter College's entrance is the northernmost door on the east side of Turl Street, the street in the city centre running between Broad Street and the High Street. We will try to have people stationed at the college door to guide newcomers in.

Third, for new members, about the format of meetings: a normal weekly meeting usually lasts from 8 PM to 11 PM and consists of six episodes of anime and two breaks. We normally watch one episode each from five different regular anime and then finish with one episode from an anime that we are not watching regularly, as a taster (or sometimes purely for entertainment's sake). We show everything with Japanese dialogue and English subtitles. The opening lineup of regular anime this year consists of Rage of Bahamut, Shirobako, Last Exile, Paradise Kiss and Gankutsuou. If you're not sure whether you would like any of these, or you don't know them, come along to the first meeting and see what you make of their first episodes!

Fourth, a few people asked about membership fees: we do charge a membership fee of £5 for membership for the whole year, but we only collect this later in Michaelmas Term, once people have had a chance to decide whether or not they enjoy our meetings.

Fifth, I should remind you that we have a Facebook group here which you are very welcome to join if you want—informal stuff and minor notices tend to appear there—but any important notices will be sent round this mailing list.

Thank you for your patience—future emails are likely to be much shorter notices as we sort out extra one-off events such as meals and film nights, or reminders of the location and time of weekly meetings. (If you think you were added to this mailing list by mistake, or if you would like to be removed, get in touch.)

Best wishes,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

Hello / Welcome Back!

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Tuesday, 6th October 2015 @ 7:06pm

Dear all,

Welcome back to our returning members, and for any new people keen enough that they have already signed up to the mailing list, hello and well done! I hope everyone had a good summer. A few Oxford Anime Vision notices:

(1) For anyone coming to Freshers' Fair, we have table 553 in Room 9—a spot near the door out of the room. Come and say hi!

(2) some of us will be gathering to celebrate the beginning of the new OAV year at The Mitre (the pub/restaurant where Turl Street meets High Street, right in the city centre) from 7:30 PM onwards on Sunday night. We've booked the big round table at the back and I will have some kind of notice saying 'OAV' on the table. Existing members are very welcome—the more the merrier—and it should also be a good chance for freshers to get to know people, ask questions &c.

(3) as a reminder, the five shows with which we'll be starting the year are Rage of Bahamut, Shirobako, Paradise Kiss, Last Exile and Gankutsuou. We are, as usual, still working on room bookings, but it is highly likely that our first meeting will be at 8 PM on Friday 16 October.

(If you no longer want to be on this mailing list or are on it by mistake, let me know and I will remove your address!)

Best wishes,

Daniel

[OAV]

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Saturday, 20th June 2015 @ 3:34pm

Dear all,

We've now held the last OAV meeting of this academic year, marking the end of Trinity Term and bringing everything we have been watching to a conclusion. Thank you to everyone who came along, whether that was for just one meeting, all of them, or somewhere in between!

OAV will return in Michaelmas Term, and it's very likely that our first standard meeting will be on Friday 16th October.

One last notice about external stuff: for folk who like events and are generally interested in Japan, I believe Hyper Japan is happening in London on July 10th–12th.

Goodbye and good luck to those members who are graduating this year! For everyone else, have a great summer and we hope to see you again in the autumn.

Best wishes,

Daniel

Meal Notice

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 8th June 2015 @ 4:37pm

Dear all,

The end of Trinity term is nearly here. As this week is week 7 we will be having a meal before the meeting: provisionally, this will be at 6pm this Friday at Bangkok House, the Thai restaurant on Hythe Bridge Street. If you would like to be included in the booking please let me know either by emailing me (oavdes@gmail.com) or by commenting on the announcement on the Facebook group, in both cases before Wednesday evening.

For anyone who's keeping track of our schedule, we're now two episodes from the end of everything we're watching, and Friday 19 June, Friday of week 8, will be our last meeting this year.

Best wishes,

Daniel

Week 1 Notices

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Friday, 24th April 2015 @ 12:33pm

Dear all,

Trinity Term begins next week, and so Oxford Anime Vision will be returning next Friday, Friday 1 May. We will be in the Saskatchewan Room at Exeter College from 8 PM to 11 PM as usual. Indeed, pleasingly, we've been able to book the Saskatchewan Room at at the usual time for all eight weeks of the term.

--

For anyone keeping track, or anyone who wants to catch up, here are the last episodes that we watched at the end of the previous term:

Tiger & Bunny 16
Eccentric Family 4
Space Battleship Yamato 2199 18
Silver Spoon 3
Shiki 16

--

Remember that the second and final marathon session of the Kara no Kyoukai film series, the follow-up to the marathon held last term, is scheduled for Saturday 9 May, at 10 AM in the Cockpit at Holywell Manor. Contact Piotr Nosalik or Felix Zhou for more details.

--

Also, the best of luck to those of us who have exams or other assessment this term. Remember to work hard, but not too hard, and to make room for discrete, defined time off (like coming to OAV!).

Best wishes,

Daniel
OAV Secretary

Wk 7 Meeting and Social

E-mail sent by Daniel Sawyer, Monday, 2nd March 2015 @ 7:16pm

Dear all,

This coming Friday we will be at Queen's College in Lecture Room B, not at Exeter. For those of us not keyed into the Oxford academic year: this will be the second-to-last meeting of term (we'll be back at Exeter for the last one).

Also, since this is week 7, it's time for the termly social meal, which will provisionally be at 6pm on Friday, before the main meeting. This time we're thinking of going to SoJo, the Chinese place just across the bridge on the way to the railway station. If you'd like to come to the meal please let me know by emailing by Wednesday evening, or by commenting in the Facebook group, so I can make a booking.

Best wishes,

Daniel
