Invading London

E-mail sent by Jan, Tuesday, 3rd February 2009 @ 2:12pm

Hello again to all; hope you enjoyed yesterday's snow. Some among you may recall a certain London Trip of Awesome, ostensibly planned for last Saturday. Unfortunately, scheduling problems sort of... got in the way. So we're giving this another shot. If you're interested in going to London (anime! manga! games! tasty Japanese meals! Pocky!), please, please, please join the forum topic so we can work out which Saturday is best for everyone.

Forum topic: http://z2.invisionfree.com/Text_Based_Theater/index.php?showtopic=265

That aside, some among you may wish to invade London for social rather than economic reasons. Our sources reveal that the London Anime Socs are planning a event of epic proportions THIS SATURDAY. Also, it's free. Yep. Free. Here are the specifics, shamelessly stolen from their Facebook event:

"UCLU Animesoc are hosting an Inter-Uni Animesoc Quiz and Gaming event on Saturday 7th February. We are collaborating with a number of university anime societies throughout London to hold this.

Saturday 7th February
11:30am - 4pm @ Conference Room, 2nd Floor, Bloomsbury Building"

The great and glorious Jonathan has spoken to the VP of one of the societies, and OAV members are welcome to attend for the gaming and socialising, though not the quiz. Games available include:
PS2: Guitar Hero (w/ custom anime songs), Street Fighter, ParaPara, Taiko no Tatsujin...
Wii: Super Smash Bros Brawl, Tatsunoko vs Capcom...
PC: DDR (StepMania), Touhou...

The OAV doesn't have membership cards, but show your Bod card at the door and you should be able to get in.

Finally, a note that our Caption Competition deadline is apparently TOMORROW. Yes. TOMORROW, 4 FEB, WEDNESDAY. Quick! Post while you still can!

Dear OAV Members,

Frances-chan is very sad that everyone forgot about Frances-chan's starfish last week, and so no-one is coming to Frances-chan's society's shopping trip. Frances-chan and Jonathan-kun have had to cancel the trip this weekend, but we will not give up!

Frances-chan thinks Frances-chan should put off the shopping trip to another time, when people will remember Frances-chan's starfish and not be so busy. Frances-chan will do her best this time to find the perfect date for everyone!

If you please, accept this email!

The London Trip Of Awesome

E-mail sent by Jan, Wednesday, 28th January 2009 @ 8:59am

Hello again, loyal anime watchers. We hope you had a good start to term (made better by OAV meetings, obviously). You've no doubt spotted a pattern by now: unless otherwise noted, all subsequent meetings will indeed be in Worcester College, Lecture Room B, 8 pm to 11 pm on Fridays. And if you need a catch-up, you can pidge a DVD-R to me; the Caption Competition continues to run; etc. etc.

Right. Now, details of the London Trip Of Awesome:

--------------GETTING THERE

We're meeting:
- at Gloucester Green Bus Station
- this Saturday, 31 January
- at 10:45 am
...to catch either the Oxford Tube or the Oxford Espress into London. A student return is £13 on either service.

In case you plan to leave early from London, here are maps of the return trip stops:
Oxford Tube stops in London: http://www.oxfordtube.com/londontube.php
Oxford Espress stops in London: http://www.oxfordbus.co.uk/main.php?page_id=60

--------------(A RATHER ROUGH) ITINERARY

10:45 Meet at Gloucester Green bus station
11:00 Depart Oxford by bus (disembarking at Marble Arch stop)
13:00 Tottenham Court Road shops: Forbidden Planet, Gosh! Comics, Orbital
14:00 Lunch at Abeno
15:00 Piccadilly Circus shops and the Japan Centre
17:30 Catch the bus back to Oxford

--------------LONDON SHOPPING GUIDE

***Near Tottenham Court Road Tube Station***

Forbidden Planet
A shop devoted to science-fiction and fantasy goods of all types. They carry a large selection of comics and graphic novels, including manga (with lots of heavily discounted titles), as well as every UK anime DVD there is (but no imports). A good place for anime toys, figurines and bric-a-brac such as Gundam models and Macross t-shirts.
Map: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=WC2H8JR
Web: http://www.forbiddenplanet.com/

Gosh! Comics
Just around the corner from Forbidden Planet, opposite the British Museum. Very good at getting English language manga translations quickly but don't have the largest of stocks. Downstairs has (probably) the UK's best collection of political cartoons.
Map: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=WC1B3PH&scale=10000
Web: http://goshlondon.blogspot.com/

Orbital Comics and Orbital Manga
Two shops near Tottenham Court tube station, the latter being more relevant.
Map: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=WC2H0LB
Web: http://www.orbitalcomics.com/

Abeno
A specialist okonomiyaki restaurant. Okonomiyaki is a speciality of Osaka, resembling a cross between an omelette, a pizza and a pancake. Cooked on special hotplates built into the tables of the restaurant, the fruit sauce you get with them is a particular treat.
Map: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=WC1A1LY&scale=10000
Web: http://www.abeno.co.uk/

***Near Piccadilly Circus***

Mitsukoshi and JP Books
A Japanese department store in London, relevant mainly for the bookstore in the basement: JP Books, which carries a good selection of Japanese novels, manga, and magazines. Has a good display of art books as well as the Japanese Ghibli DVDs.
Map: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=SW1Y4PH%20&scale=10000
Web: http://www.mitsukoshi.co.jp/

Japan Centre
Japanese magazines, books, stationery, food, travel centre and video hire. On the ground floor is a Japanese supermarket where you can buy various exciting Japanese foods -- including Pocky, Calpis or sake -- and in the basement a Japanese bookstore. Next door is a restaurant, with a sake and sushi shop in the basement. Note to those who've seen Ouran: they have affordable ootoro sushi.
Map: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=W1J9HG%20&scale=10000
Web: http://www.japancentre.com/

Kitchoan London
Japanese confectioners selling gorgeous, tasty and horribly expensive Japanese desserts and sweets. Worth a look even if you can't afford to buy.
Map: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=W1J0DS&scale=10000
Web: http://www.kitchoan.com/

Tower Records
In the basement, in the games section, they stock a selection of Japanese game and anime music - mostly Final Fantasy soundtracks and the like.
Map: http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?pc=W1J0TR&scale=10000
Web: http://uk.towerrecords.com

Rice Wine
Apparently a good place to get lots of Japanese sweets cheap. And probably sake as well, given the name.

Read, Then Buy: London Shopping Trip Preliminaries

E-mail sent by Alexei Stephenson, Wednesday, 21st January 2009 @ 11:07am

Greetings, loyal fans of Sumiregawa Nenene and her paper-wielding bodyguards.

As you are doubtless aware, it is the time-honoured tradition of the Sumiregawa Fan Club that, once a year, we descend upon London to purchase Sensei's latest work, as well as any interesting-looking manga and anime that are still around from the January sales. This year, due to the late start of term, we are likely to have missed any signing/attempted assasination events, but we still have two possible slots left open to us.

Either, with sadly short notice, we depart this Saturday the 24th, or next week on the 31st (more time to prepare, and payday for our graduate members, but the sales will be nearly over).

The final decision will be made at this Friday's Sumiregawa prose reading, so please find out by then which date(s) you will be able to make. It would be even more helpful if you were to also make these known in the relevant forum thread at z2.invisionfree.com/Text_Based_Theater/index.php

Welcome Back!

E-mail sent by Jan, Saturday, 17th January 2009 @ 4:39pm

Happy New Year (and term) to all! We hope you had a lovely festive season, anime-watching optional. Oxford Anime Vision is meeting the new year with various shiny new things, including a swank new location and two upcoming series -- details below, of course.

------------1. THE FIRST MEETING

MARVEL! at the plush environs of the OAV's new home
DISCUSS! our upcoming epic journey to London [see 2.]
THRILL! at the continued adventures of various hapless and not-so-hapless protagonists
REVEL! in the ice-cream-filled post-screening G&D's meeting

Where: Lecture Room B, Worcester College
When: Friday 23 January, 8 pm - 11 pm

Worcester College is just northeast of Gloucester Green bus station. Here's a map:
http://i39.tinypic.com/1195dev.jpg

Upon entering Worcester College, you'll be facing the main quad. The second staircase along the right side of the quad is Staircase 5, which has a brown plaque helpfully reading 'Lecture Room B'. Go straight *down* the stairs -- do not turn off at the first landing -- and you'll see a door with coat-hooks to the side. That's Lecture Room B, our base of operations for this entire term. Hurrah!

------------1.5 CATCHING UP

If you missed the last session of Michaelmas, just pidge a blank CD-R or DVD-R to Janice Heng at Brasenose College; indicate your full name, college, and which week you need a catch-up for (i.e. Week 8); and wait for said CD-R or DVD-R to be returned with the relevant past episodes on it.

------------2. SHOPPING TRIP TO LONDON

In ye olde OAV tradition, we're planning an anime and manga shopping trip to London, provisionally scheduled for 31 January, Saturday. Details to be discussed during the first session of term, so be sure to turn up and get your opinions in!

------------3. CAPTION COMPETITION

The Caption Competition [http://groupspaces.com/oav/pages/] is still very much alive -- the current deadline is 4 Feb, Wednesday.

------------4. COMING SOON

Midway through Hilary Term, we'll come to the end of Baccano! and Crest of the Stars, as well as the start of two new series: Genshiken and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. The former chronicles life in an anime club which in no way resembles this one; the latter is a comedy series about negativity, cynicism and despair. No, really.

------------5. AND IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY NOTICED

Our migration to the Groupspaces mailing list heralds the decline of staid, point-by-point emails such as this one. Eagle-eyed readers will already have noticed December's Caption Competition announcement, made by none other than the OAV President Emeritus. Be prepared for much more in that vein...

Capture Competition III

E-mail sent by Alexei Stephenson, Saturday, 6th December 2008 @ 6:06pm

Attention, junior officers of the Bernardelli Insurance Society.

It has come to our attention that Vash the Stampede is still at large in spite of weekly efforts to track him down. All members are therefore required to reinforce their impending doom recognition skills by participating in the latest round of Bernardelli Insurance Society's Vash Capture Competition.  Please study the sample image of Impending Doom found here, and post your interpretations by Sunday 4th February.

The most accurate assessment, as judged by the Board of Directors, will receive the usual prize, as well as eternal glory and their very own Predatory-Looking Black Cat(tm), subject to Terms and Conditions.

First Session! Friday! 8:00! Platnauer Room, Brasenose College!

E-mail sent by Jonathan Barrett, Thursday, 16th October 2008 @ 2:01am

Sorry those of you just on this list for the late email, though there probably isn't very many of you.
And sorry if you already got this email Via the Announce List. But hey, this is the Special Edition!

Welcome to Oxford for the First time.
Welcome Back to Oxford.
And Hey again if you're always in Oxford.

I am Jonathan Barrett, OAV Mascot (Curse you, Alexei!), also known as Lord Of the Black Scarf!

A New University Term Has Begun, and With it, another Term of Anime Soc Sessions!

This will mostly be a direct copy of the email sent out on the Announce List. But it is is the GroupSpace Special Edition, With Extras Including Secret Links, and Behind the Scenes Features on Fresher's Fair, so you don't mind getting it twice.

First about our first meeting of term and other stuff that was in the first email, as was written by Janice... mostly (I've made a couple alterations...).
If you've already read this, you'll probably want to scroll past it...

********************************

Greetings to new members, existing members, and people who now regret signing up for all those societies during Freshers' Fair. (Those of you in the last group can scroll down to section 5. But that would be a bit cruel of you.)

Welcome to Oxford Anime Vision, otherwise known as the Anime Society or AnimeSoc. This email reads in decreasing order of importance, allowing you to flee whenever convenient.

------------1. IN (VERY) BRIEF

The society: Holds weekly screenings of episodes from five anime series, in running order, as well as one Random Episode each meeting.
Anime: Japanese animation. A medium, not a genre. Includes everything from the Japanese equivalent of Saturday morning cartoons and romantic comedies to gritty Noir thrillers and supernatural epics. We try to show a mix of stuff; see section 3.

------------2. THE FIRST MEETING

Where: Platnauer Room, Brasenose College
When: Friday 17 October, 8 pm - 11 pm

Brasenose College faces the Radcliffe Camera, which is that domed building tourists like to photograph.
Here is a map:
The Platnauer Room is located up Staircase XI in the New Quad. Turn left after the lodge, go through the archway and around the garden beyond it, and you should find yourself in New Quad. Taking that position as the lower-right corner, Staircase XI is along the 'top' side.

Failing which, you can simply loiter in Brasenose lodge just before 8 pm. We'll have people waiting there to lead you to the room; you may recognise them from (a) having seen them at the Freshers' Fair Stall, (b) their OAV T-Shirts of Awesome (c) By the Black Long Scarf of Super Special Awesome (possibly, though there is a good chance I will be late... :( ).

We'll be holding the traditional First Meeting raffle, with chances to win anime-related prizes such as DVDs, figurines, Figures and manga volumes. And Even DeathNotes and a Giant OAV Poster! Membership fees won't be collected this week. There is post-screening ice-cream and chat at G&D's. And if all that isn't enough to entice you, check out our line-up below.

[------------2.5 THE NEXT MEETING
The Platnauer Room is unfortunately on the small side, but Week 2's meeting will be held in the much more accommodating Lecture Room XI of Brasenose College. Just so you know.]

------------3. THIS TERM'S SERIES

CLAYMORE
In a world filled with shape-shifting demons known as Yoma, a shady organisation has created Claymores -- half-human, half-Yoma hybrids -- to protect the human race. This is the story of one such Claymore, Clare, and the village boy who joins her as she battles against Yoma, conspiracies, and her own demonic side.

CLANNAD
The heart-warming tale of a disaffected high school boy and the sweet, quiet girl who changes his life. Romance, drama, comedy, cherry blossoms, and enough supporting characters to suit everyone's tastes in fictional teenage girls.

TRIGUN
Vash the Stampede is an outlaw with a trail of destruction behind him, a sixty-billion-dollar bounty on his head, and a strange dislike for actually killing people. Meryl and Milly are two insurance agents sent to track him down. Nicholas D. Wolfwood is a bad-ass gunslinging preacher. It's a Western. In space. Need we say more?

BACCANO!
It's 1930, and rival mafia gangs are painting Prohibition-era New York a sinister shade of red. But this isn't your run-of-the-mill mafia anime: there's alchemy, kidnappings, a pair of 'idiot thieves', a trainful of shady agendas, and more narrative threads than you'd expect, all set to a jazz soundtrack. Think Pulp Fiction with a touch of the supernatural.

CREST OF THE STARS
An elegant space opera based on a series of popular sci-fi Japanese novels. Set in an extremely detailed futuristic universe, it follows the adventures of Jinto and Lafiel, who are caught up in the beginnings of a great war. Despite the space war settings, this series is better known for its gritty character development, and isn't one for the action junkies. (Action junkies: see Claymore and Baccano!)

------------4. OTHER THINGS

Besides the weekly meetings, the OAV also holds termly socials at legendary Japanese restaurant Edamame; shopping trips to London; day-long marathons; and possibly Other Stuff, so do speak up if you have ideas.

http://groupspaces.com/oav/ is where you will find all relevant info, including upcoming events and our now-running Caption Competition, to which our OAV Mascot makes the following suggestion as a entry: "Izuru Kira Confesses his Secret Shame. He Once Appeared in an Episode of Dragon Ball Z".

And then there is the untamed wilderness of our forum, which we hope you will help to populate:
http://z2.invisionfree.com/Text_Based_Theater/index.php?act=SC&c=11

The committee:
Frances 'F' Weightman, OAV President and force for justice [silverstar1809@yahoo.co.uk]
Duncan Lugton, Treasurer [freedmind@gmail.com]
Janice Heng, Secretary [divisionbyzero@gmail.com]
Alexei Stephenson, President Emeritus
Jonathan Barrett, OAV Mascot, forum admin, and owner of much of our Freshers' Fair stall And General Lord of Awesome.[shadow_mask_sm@hotmail.com]
Kajia Wei, Vice Treasurer (note the absent hyphen) Court Jester, or Shadow Councillor, depending whom you ask
*********************************

Now for Behinds the Scenes at Fresher's Fair.

As with last year, and as stated above, most of the stuff on the stall belonged to me again.
We tried to tone it down a bit, and this time there was not a giant Optimus Prime (Though I did include a Deluxe Class Animated Soundwave, but for the obvious reason shown below)(alright, so I also smuggled in a Tiny Ghost of Starscream...).
We had two table this year, so one was taken up by books, including many Art Books, Manga (including some of this year's prizes) and our Death Note for Sign Up. Oh yes, the Death Note once again was used, and took many victums again this year.
In fact, this year, we had a Shinigami on the stall... two even! We had good old Ryuk pestering Mikuru in toy form, we had a Lifesize one too on the first day! That's right, we had Chaos Cosplaying as a God of Death. Only from the wrong series. Oh well, close enough.
Here's some glimpses of what the stall looked like...
The Toy End Part one.
The Toy End Part two.
Our Mecha Fanservice Girl. (well My Mecha Fanservice Girl...)
Animted Soundwave and Eva Unit 00 play Guitar Heroes.
One of our Talented Staff. He's Single Girls... and you can probably tell why...
And another sneaky photo of me... This and the previous one were taken by our neighbours, the Photography Soc. They were using my Camera though (with the Macro Lense, so very shallow focus depth).
And a look at our other tab-AGHHH! UnHoly Mother of Cthulhu!

Ahhhhh Much Better....

However, due to some.... Postal issues (Curse you Parcel Force, Curse you Customs!), the stall was actually missing some things I intended to have in time and set up. Indeed, even Itsuki(and his Background set up) in the pictures of the stall was only there on the last Afternoon!
Here is some of the... Deleted Content that didn't make the deadline.
The Full SOS Brigade Dance Squad,
AND THEN SOME!
Who Do You Think We Are?
We're the Oxford Anime Soc!
Seriously, that Gundam Action Base is awesome...

Alas, I only got them Friday Morning.... and only had time to open Itsuki before my afternoon shift.

Also, extra! Dragon Half Manga!

Well see you friday.... Tomorrow even.... And remember...

You Don't Stand...

Yeah, we'll still be making Abridged Series References...

-Jonathan Barrett,
OAV Mascot, and Mask of Nyarlathotep

And now for one last extra thing... A TF Wiki Link!
Movie Devastator!

Help Wanted- Free T-shirts for volunteers...

E-mail sent by Jonathan Barrett, Wednesday, 1st October 2008 @ 2:16am

Greetings again people,
You'll all either be coming back to Oxford soon, or already here, so Welcome Back. Let's make this the best year Yet! But first, some pre-term matters to discuss...

Now before I begin, I would just like to point out my T-Shirt states quite plainly, I am in no way a Villain, so please do not worry about a thing. I am not trying to end the world. And despite the fact I own three Deathnotes, I am Not Kira.

Now that's out of the way, I'll continue. About a week ago, I asked for volunteers to help with Fresher's Fair. Basically, as some of you may remember from last year, or even the year before that, every Zero Week, the OAV, that is Oxford Anime Vision, also known as the Oxford Anime Soc, has a stall at Fresher's Fair (and also Re-Fresher's Fair). Fresher's Fair is of course where all the Uni clubs try to attract new members from those starting at Our great University that year. It is on the last three days of the week (Wednesday 8th, Thursday 9th, Friday 19th), with stalls being set up on the Tuesday. The times of the fair are 9:30 to 16:30 on Wednesday, and 9:00 to 16:00 on the last two days.

Having the same person on the stall for those long hours without a lunch break will probably leave us with some very poor stall holders, who will scare away any who might otherwise dare put their names in the Deathnote. Thus it is that we would like as many volunteers as possible, so volunteers can enjoy short shifts, and keep bright and smiling to welcome potential new members. All people would need to do is stand/sit behind the table, explain what we do (meet every week, watch a load of anime, go eat Ice Cream [Ice Cream bit V. Important, don't forget it!], and probably mention we have Marathons and a yearly shopping trip up to London to visit the Comic Book shops, which strangely enough also tend to stock Manga, etc etc), explain how our Deathnote works (be sure to point out it Doesn't cause death, that's a very important detail!) for our signing up, give out fliers, and answers any other questions asked to the best of your ability. I'll probably try to send a lot of time on the stall myself to help out (I've been helping out with it for a few years now, I kinda know what I'm doing).

Also, I won't exactly be asking you to do this for free...
Those Freshers who saw the stall last year, may remember the people working on it wore Special T-Shirts (or Awesome Cosplay, but that was only part of the time). Don't remember them? Then...
     ....Let Me....

                      ....Refresh Your Memories.
And here's an Unused design.

That's right, you get your choice of T-Shirt if you help out by keeping the stall warm for a bit. The only catch is that you have to wear the T-Shirt while at the stall (unless you're going to Cosplay).  But don't choose your design quite yet, as this year, they are joined by EIGHT new designs.  Also included below are the quote I intend to print on the back. Enjoy:-

I'm Definitely Not A.....
"But that Doesn't mean I'm Not Evil."

I'm Definitely Not Kira
"And I definitely Don't have a Death Note."
[and possibly "What's a Death Note?" under that]

We're Definitely Not Like...
"Our President's a Girl."

This is Not a Magic Missile...

"But with less Tactics, More Explodey."

My Other Mecha's A...

"This One's a Samurai."

My Other Mecha' An...

[With an image of a chibi SD Eva on the back]

[And finally last year's President's pick of my new bunch]

Smile And Nod...
"...And then Run Like Hell!"

I'm here to Kick Butt and Chew Bubble Gum

"Thanks, er Revy, you can do the rest..."
[Also considering a version with Only the text at the top on the front, and the text at the bottom
is put on the back of the T-Shirt]

A Black T-Shirt featuring one of these awesome designs could be your's, if you just help us out a bit and take a small shift of looking after the stall. I won't lie to you. These will just be Iron on transfers, which do not last Forever. But they are free, so no complaining. Also I'm the on who irons them on, so don't expect that to be perfect neither. (though if you volunteer early, I may be able to get my Mum to iron them on for me when she visits this weekend, so Act Now!). Be sure to tell me what shirt size you'll need (Small? Medium? Large? X-Large?), else your free shirt won't fit you very well.

We could also probably do with some more Raffle prizes, and of course some help setting up on Tuesday.

Emailing me directly
is probably best, specially if you want a T-Shirt, or contact another committee member to offer your help, with such detail as what day you can help, what times you can do, and how long you are willing to help us for, along with what design you want and shirt size.

I hope to hear from some of your soon. And welcome back to Oxford.

-Jonathan Barrett, OAV Mascot.

Haruhi Suzumiya Wants You To Help Out At Fresher's Fair!

E-mail sent by Jonathan Barrett, Thursday, 25th September 2008 @ 8:22pm

Greetings Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is I, Nyarlathotep, Lord of the Black Scarf, better known to you people as.... Jonathan Barrett(or that guy who has that Really Long Black Scarf when it isn't too warm). As the New Term approaches, there is much preparation to be done, and stuff to announce etc. It has fallen to me, the OAV Mascot, to inform everyone, and send out the call to arms.... What terrible times we have fallen on. What Chance Do We Have?

Before talk of next term and fresher's fair, something a little sooner. Those of you who have checked the forums will have noticed we had a newcomer, who will be hoping to join us this year, introduce themselves on the forums, and were not scared off by us, even though a Certain Someone, who shall be unnamed, tried their best, by, >gasp< posing as our beloved President. They will be arriving in Oxford on, well  today(Thursday)(in fact, they're probably already here, among us!), and members of the committee, myself included, are thinking of greeting them, by having a meal at Edamame on Friday, at 5:30, we hope at least. I apologise in advance if it turns out they can't make tomorrow now, but some of us will still be meeting to discuss other things, other OAV things, such as Fresher's Fair Preparation, and this year's T-Shirt designs (see Below). Can We Do Less? Any other OAV members in Oxford already are free to join us, and join in the discussions, and make your opinions ignored.... I mean known.

After this Dinner, the next main things for the OAV are the Fresher's Fair and the First Session. Both of which, You can help with.

As tradition in the first session of term, we have a raffle, and give away prizes. We already have a pretty damn good selection, however any  donations of old manga or anime that you no longer want, are very welcome. Or anything else Anime related you think would make a cool prize for that matter. At the moment, I am the holder of the Prizes (and the DeathNote, which means, since a couple of the prizes Are Also Deathnotes, I have Three Death Notes.... Mwahahahahahaha!), so email me, or another committee member, if you have anything, or bring it on Friday (Edamame or even the first session of term itself). Who knows, maybe we'll have some Surplus To Requirements...

Next is the thing we really need help with. As you should all remember, at Fresher's Fair we have a stall, which had some people on it (sporting Super Special Awesome T-Shirts), trying to get you to join the OAV. This year will be no different. It may surprise you to find this out, but those people were all Members of the Anime Soc, including a couple old ones. You TOO can help out in this way! Also, if you help out, you Too get an Awesome T-shirt. Last Year's Designs will be returning (links below), along with some new designs, which I will be asking opinions on which images to use at Edamame. Freshers, and Refreshers fair will be on the 8th, 9th, and 10th of October, Which is the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of ZERO week, between 9:30 and 4:30 on the first day, and 9:00 and 4:00 on the second two. There will also be a set up day on the Tuesday, and help then is also welcome. We're not expecting one person to man it for an entire day, of course, we tend to have two people on the stall all day, but they swap with other in shifts. Also some of you may also remember we had a Cosplayer this year. IF anyone who can man the stall for a while Does Cosplay, or knows someone who can help us out, them it will be very welcome as the Cosplayer was a big draw last year. So What Are You Playing At, email me for more details and your offers to help!
And remember, T-Shirts.

And there will be new ones for this year too. So don't go choosing the one you want straight away. As the New Ones will Give You the Worst Case of Indigestion You've Ever Had!(Wait, that made even less sense than the other ones).

Well hope to see some of you Friday- I mean tomorrow, and even more of you at the first session of term. Like Some Predatory Bird.

Farewell for now. It's Over-- Finished!

-Jonathan Barrett.

London And Shiny Things Therein

E-mail sent by Alexei Stephenson, Monday, 14th July 2008 @ 6:11pm

Greetings, fellow victims of the Nihon Hikikomori Kyokai.

In an effort to help you endure this agonisingly OAV-less summer, I offer an e-mail from Akemi Solloway, who organised a very fun tea ceremony demonstration for JapanSoc last year.

Epilogue

E-mail sent by Alexei Stephenson, Wednesday, 18th June 2008 @ 1:47pm

Attention, remaining OAV members.

The end of the world is upon us, and as we all know, there is only one way to greet it - with wild partying. Thus, we assemble at Jonathan's flat (Flat 2, Folly Bridge Court, Shirelake Close, right opposite the Head of the River pub, also just down the road from G&D's) in order to watch School Rumble OVAs, the Utena movie (allegedly twice as confusing and freaky as the TV series) and other random junk tangentially related to this year's series (including, if we have time, a preview of School Rumble Second Semester).

The year is 2008. The date is today. The time is 7:45pm.

See you soon, and I look forward to standing alongside you in the afterlife, flanked by the ghosts of Gin-san, Dios, Harima's love life and Sagara Sousuke.

Surprise Inspection

E-mail sent by Alexei Stephenson, Sunday, 1st June 2008 @ 4:43pm

Attention, OAV members.

The next OAV President, presently codenamed F, is coming for a surprise inspection of the Society. All members are required to attend a special debriefing session at Edamame (the Japanese restaurant on Holywell Street) at 5:45pm on Friday 6 June. Bribes may, but are not guaranteed to, help you pass the loyalty testing phase of the session.

Survivors will be permitted to attend the subsequent OAV meeting, which will take place as normal.

Afterwards, there will be cake.
