Oxford University student publications have been mainly focusing on artistic, political and cultural issues, either neglecting science altogether or mentioning scientific topics only sporadically. We have realised that this is so and decided to do something about it. To put it in biological terms: we have decided to fill in an empty niche. In our high-tech world, science and technology are essential to many aspects of our lives from simple electricity needs to life saving vaccines and surgery. However, this magazine focuses mainly on life sciences, although it is called a biology magazine. After all, biology is the study of the living world and as such is closely related to all life sciences. The main purpose of the magazine is to give students an opportunity to write about their experiences involving science and to share their scientific and philosophical views about life and its intricacies. It is aimed at a wide readership, targeting non-scientists as well as scientists, so there is no A-level science requirement for reading this magazine. Apart from focusing on non-fiction writing we would like to promote interest and opportunity for science related fiction writing, drawing, filming… We also hope the magazine will offer training and CV points to those wishing to pursue careers in science communication or media.
