'Sex and Potency in Babylonian Medicine', Prof Mark Geller
Tuesday 3th week (28th Oct), 8pm
The Queen’s College (New Lecture Theatre)
Love is a many splendoured thing... that has for millennia caused humanity much angst and trouble. Come along and find out how the Babylonians went about getting the girl/guy of their dreams with a little love magic, how they kept them with their own versions of 'the little blue pill', and how they dealt with lovesickness (yes, that feeling when you can't eat, sleep, or even think of anything but that one special person was in fact considered a DISEASE for many centuries). Who knows, you may even pick up a few tips!
Professor Mark Geller is former head of the Department of Jewish and Hebrew Studies at University College London, where he lectures on Assyriology. His research concentrates on magic and medicine in the Ancient Near East, and he
has published a large number of works on the subject including 'Ancient medicine: the patient's perspective', 'Mesopotamian Love Magic: Discourse or Intercourse?' and 'West Meets East: Early Greek and Babylonian Diagnosis'.
Port, orange juice and freshly baked brownies will be provided!
