Power & Politics in Global Health
University College London, 25th-26th October.
This year, the Medsin National Conference will revolve around the theme of Power and Politics in Global Health. Our aim is to inspire, empower and arm delegates with the knowledge and skills necessary to fight for global health equity.
Global health inequality is one of the most demanding issue of our age. HIV/AIDS ravages southern Africa, whilst in Europe it is a managed chronic disease. Malaria has been eradicated from most of southern Europe, yet it is still one of the biggest killers of under 5 children in many tropical areas. In 2008 food production reached an all time high, yet famines and food shortages raged across the world.
We all want to eradicate HIV, to stop TB and to have enough food for everyone. Each issue can be fought seperately, head on, by dedicated campaigners. And we are proud of Medsin's work on tackling these issue at home and aboard. Medsin's experience, however, suggests that these problems all share underlying causes, and require many overlapping solutions.
The 2008 Medsin National Conference programme will go straight to the heart of what connects all these issues together. Over 4 Plenaries, 16 speakers and 80 Workshops we aim to take a step back, and consider: Who controls our health? What is the impact of poverty on health? Why are some countries poor and healthy and others rich and sick? Why do pharmaceutical companies bend over backwards to meet the lifestyles of the rich but fail the needs of the poor? Why do some countries provide health for all, and others seem to leave their poor behind? What is the role of the media, religion and ideology in shaping our global health views?
In examining these questions, we hope to enable Medsin members to understand the injustices of global health, and to become leaders in finding future solutions.
Plenaries:
1. Politics
2. Economics
3. Status, inequality and class
4. Civil Society
Confirmed speakers include:
*Clare Short MP (Former Minister for International Development)
*Dr Richard Horton (Editor, the Lancet)

*Prof Maureen Mackintosh (Open University)
*Prof Richard Wilkinson (University of Nottingham)
*Prof Jonathan Wolff (UCL)

nutritional, educational and economic support and home-based care to
people living with HIV and their families.
Vumani trains poor people living with HIV in Durban, South Africa to
grow their own organic vegetables as part of a continuum of HIV
treatment, care and support services.

The Global HIV/AIDS Pandemic: A Critical Health and Human Rights Issue
According to UNAIDS, 2.9 million people died of AIDS-related
illnesses and 4.3 million people were infected with HIV in 2006
alone. About 40 million people are living with HIV around the
globe. Young people bear the brunt of this pandemic, as over
half of all new infections occur in people aged 15-24.
The Other Four
Today, HIV is a preventable and treatable illness. Although advances
in medical technology have created powerful new antiretroviral drugs
(ART) that prolong the lives of HIV-positive individuals, for every
one person who receives treatment, FOUR more around the world do not.
Although the current efforts of developed countries (including the
UK) to fund treatment have made some improvements – between 2001 and
2005, the number of people in low- and middle-income countries
receiving treatment increased from 240,000 to 1.3 million - millions
of others have not been so fortunate and will die without access to
therapy. While most live in developing countries - where people not
only need HIV drugs but access to basic health care services as well
– even in the UK some individuals are denied treatment because of
their legal status.
As privileged, empowered and educated young people in the UK, we need
to do everything we can to stop the devastation caused by AIDS at
home and abroad!
What YOU Can Do
Attend our events during World AIDS Week, but don’t stop there!
In 2005, G8 leaders set a target of universal access to treatment for
all people living with HIV by 2010. Nearing the end of 2007, these
goals are far from achieved. The Stop AIDS Campaign and many other
groups have been putting pressure on the UK government ever since to
meet its promises.
Visit www.stopaidssocieties.org.uk for more on the national
campaign.

Hello everyone,
Many of you have expressed interest in being a part of the GHC organising committee - that's fantastic! There are a few committee meetings coming up this week. Please reply directly to the team leaders if you are interested in attending any of these meetings or joining the team.
1) Design & Publicity Team
(dora.steel@balliol.ox.ac.uk or alma-octavia.iacob@keble.ox.ac.uk)
There are lots of different things that need designing:
1. The website. It's up and running but we need to decide on a colour scheme and so on to make it look a bit nicer. We also need to start writing more content (speaker bios etc) for the website.
2. Posters (once we've got the logo fully sorted - it's been designed, but needs polishing.
3. The booklet with the timetable and so on given to all delegates.
4. All the other freebies: bag, T-shirts, neck-tags and so on.
5. Some other stuff, e.g. publicity video
It would probably be a good idea if we can all have a short meeting to allocate
jobs and decide on things to do with overall "branding". Possible times for me
include Thursday and Friday evenings this week, or any time on Saturday. Could
you please let me know which, if any, of these times would be suitable for you? If not everyone can come, just let me or Alma know what you're interested in doing.
2) Entz Team
(biyun.jiang@magd.ox.ac.uk or nisha.sriram@keble.ox.ac.uk)
Organise a mini-Oxford ball at the Oxford Union on Saturday night of the conference weekend!
Next Meeting is at 14th November (Wednesday) at 1.40pm in town outside Rymans stationer
3) Finance Team
(joel.raffel@green.ox.ac.uk or rachael.burke@bnc.ox.ac.uk)
- Companies that could give us some freebies. Looking for fruit, crisps, breakfast bars, doughnuts! Anything else you can think of - creativity is fine!
- Companies worth approaching for money
- Contacts for printing colour A3 posters for cheap
- Counting the number of seats in LT2 of the John Radcliffe Hospital (seriously)
- Contacts for cheap flights between the US and UK as well as Africa and UK, if not willing to give a discount to a charity, at least someone who can tell us of amazing deals!
- Transport companies that hire out coaches for cheap
- Bigwigs in any of the major train/bus/coach companies who'd be willing to offer a discount to students attending the conference by public transport
(Note from Xin Hui: by contacts, we're mostly referring to people you know personally and would be willing to give you a better price than what'd be listed for the general public, but information about any companies/people who offer stuff at really good prices would be welcome, too, of course!)
Have any ideas for the above? E-mail the Finance Team!

E-mail newsletter sent by Xin Hui Chan, Wednesday 7th November @ 12:47am
Hello everyone, welcome once again to the Medsin Oxford newsletter - there's a
lot going on this week!
This week:
1) Sexpression: information session 8th November; Sexball, 24th November
2) Restart, 9th and 15th November
3) STAR (Student Action for Refugees) Conference, 10th-11th November
4) Universities for Access to Essential Medicines Campaign, 20th November
5) Defend Access to Healthcare for Vulnerable Migrants Campaign
6) Global health conference/careers fair at the Institute of Child Health, 24th-
25th November
7) Meetings at the Royal Society of Medicine, 12th/26th November
1) SEXPRESSION: INFORMATION SESSION AND SEXBALL
If you're interested in helping teenagers in secondary schools understand
sexual health, come to our information session at 12pm on Thursday 8th
November, in lecture theatre 2 at the JR. Find out all about what we do and how to do it, and get some free food into the bargain. If you can't make it, e-mail us at annette.stiggelbout@lmh.ox.ac.uk
Also, on the 24th November we'll be holding an afternoon of great talks on
everything from female genital mutilation to AIDS in Birmingham Medical School,
followed by a three-course black tie dinner and a disco. All-inclusive tickets
are £35. Please contact coordinator@sexpression.co.uk.
2) RESTART SESSIONS
The Restart session at 8:45am in Oxford Community School is still looking for a
leader and a couple more trainers (no experience needed for the latter!).
On Thursday 15th, there's a session with a difference: Oxford Community School
has asked for medics - not just Restarters - to come and talk to year 11
students and hopefully inspire them. Help much appreciated, even if you can
only come for an hour (the event's running all day).
Contact david.pallot@medschool.ox.ac.uk.
3) STUDENT ACTION FOR REFUGEES (STAR) CONFERENCE
On the 10th and 11th of November, STAR is running the year's only conference on
refugee issues for students, with workshops and speakers from the UN, Amnesty,
the Refugee Council and parliament. Venue in central London; tickets cost £25
including food, basic accommodation and entertainments.
E-mail conference@star-network.org.uk or see www.star-network.org.uk
4) VISIT FROM HEAD OF UNIVERSITIES FOR ACCESS TO ESSENTIAL MEDICINES CAMPAIGN
UAEM campaigns to make drugs more essential in poor countries, and to promote
research into neglected diseases. The executive director, Ethan Guillen, is
visiting the UK and will be speaking in London on Tuesday 20th November. See
www.essentialmedicine.org or e-mail vanessa.jessop@msn.com.
5) MEDSIN CAMPAIGN TO DEFEND ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE FOR VULNERABLE MIGRANTS
The British governement is proposing to change the law so that migrants in
Britain - including some very vulnerable individuals such as victims of people-
trafficking - cannot access primary healthcare. Medsin UK feels that refusing
help to people in such dire straits goes against the duties of a doctor (and
won't even be efficient, since diseases will end up being treated at a later,
more complicated stage). HIV-positive migrants may be denied access to vital
anti-retroviral drugs. We'll be campaigning against the government's changes -
please join us.
See www.medsin.org/defendprimaryhealthcare or e-mail dontcensortom@gmail.com.
6) GLOBAL HEALTH CONFERENCE AND CAREERS FAIR AT INSTITUTE OF CHILD HEALTH
Tickets now available for a weekend of world-class speakers and workshops on
major global health issues at the UCL Institute of Child Health, 24th-25th
November, and the first-ever International Health Careers Fair.
See www.almamata.net/conference or www.medsin.org/events/show/100
7) CONFERENCE AT THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF MEDICINE
Royal Society of Medicine: Conference series on Climate Change and Health.
Monday 12th November: Global Warming and Food Production
Monday 26th November: Action for the Health Consequences of Climate Change
Meetings run from 5:45-8pm. See www.rsm.ac.uk/diar/diary.php
The longest yet - well done if you read it all. For more information, e-mail
dora.steel@medschool.ox.ac.uk. Have a good week.
