E-mail sent by Edgar Napoleon Asiimwe, Friday, 15th January 2016 @ 1:13pm

AIS SIG GlobDev 2016 Pre-ECIS Workshop
Istanbul, Turkey, Sunday June 12, 2016

Workshop title: ICTs and Development: Strategies, Synergies and Alliances

Format: The workshop is expected to last a full day from 8am – 5:30pm and will include:
- Keynote Presentation
- Multiple Paper Sessions
- Panel discussion

The issue of the role of ICTs in the various dimensions of national Development continues to be a significant area of IS research that has attracted the interests of IS researchers at several European universities as well as other universities in developed and developing economies. Globally, several ICT for development initiatives have been developed and deployed by a range of stakeholders in the public and private sectors and non-governmental organizations. Some of these initiatives are undertaken at a national level, while others are undertaken in specific target areas, organizations or communities. Further, some of these initiatives are developed through partnerships, while others are undertaken by individual organizations, several of which may be working in the same area. The ways in which synergies and alliances have been used or can be developed to enhance the role of ICTs in global development will be a focus of this workshop. This workshop can be considered to be a continuation of GlobDev’s Conversations on Development, in which we further explore how ICTs can support the development, promotion and realization of a model of ‘development’ that is holistic, just & sustainable, and that will lead to an appropriate quality of life for each individual on the planet. Our focus includes not only development issues relevant to ‘developing’ countries but also those relevant to migrant and other minority communities or enclaves in Europe and North America.

Relevant topics include: Theoretical lenses and/or empirical studies that enable an understanding of the role of strategies, alliances and partnerships in research and practice in ICT for development, and the potential impact their use or non-use has on sustainability of initiatives; the role of ICTs in socio-economic and community development, development of human capital and supporting infrastructure.

The course will contain a mix of lectures, paper presentations and group discussions based on the participants’ ethnographic research interests and written contributions.
This PhD seminar is targeted to PhD students who have conducted in-depth qualitative ethnographic fieldwork within media and communication studies, and who are about to begin – or already in the process of – analysing these data.

All PhD students will be expected to present papers on relevant aspects regarding the analysis of their own ethnographic research.

The seminar is co-organized by Moi University and the research project Critical Perspectives on New Media and Processes of Social Change in the Global South, and sponsored by the Nordic Research Councils for the Humanities.

Research Positions

PhD program in Information Systems for Data Science
The PhD program in Information Systems for Data Science track at the College of Management, UMass Boston is accepting applications for admission beginning Fall 2016.

Program Description and Overview
The Information Systems for Data Science doctoral program of study is a specialization of the Ph.D. in Business Administration program administered by the College of Management at UMass Boston. The Data Science field is growing rapidly, creating a need for professionals who can use insights derived from big data to make effective business decisions. Data analytics has become a critical need in industries ranging from health care and financial services to marketing and government. Leveraging the strengths of the College of Management's faculty, the University of Massachusetts Boston is offering a cutting-edge and flexible doctoral program in this field.

Positioned at the intersection of technology, business, and strategy, our program allows students to have a holistic view of data science and the role it plays in competition. Students will get exposed to a variety of state-of-art research streams in information systems and data science, with a relative focus on both data analytical techniques from a design science perspective and the application and management of data analytics in business settings from an organizational perspective. All students engage actively in research projects with faculty.

The program requires coursework for the first two years, followed by dissertation-related research. In their coursework, students explore a range of courses in statistics and research methods to develop their methodological skills, and department offers a number of seminars focusing on conceptual Information Systems foundations and emerging research topics. From the start, doctoral students work with multiple faculty to gain familiarity with their research interests, and in combination with their coursework this provides students with the theoretical knowledge and methodological skills needed to become productive researchers and to achieve successful careers. The department's faculty are active researchers publishing in top-tier journals such as Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management Information Systems, Management Science and various other leading journals. Some of the current research areas of faculty include Big Data, Social Media and Innovation, Healthcare IT, Cybersecurity, IT Strategy, Risk management, among others.

The application deadline is January 15, 2016. Accepted students are eligible for Ph.D. assistantships, which include full tuition and fee waivers along with an annual stipend of $25,000 for the first three years.

Tribute to Dr Paolo Brunello

E-mail sent by Edgar Napoleon Asiimwe, Friday, 16th October 2015 @ 11:55am

- A good name is better than fine perfume... (Ec. 7:1)

Dear IPID Community!

It is with great sadness that I am emailing to inform you of the death of Dr Paolo Brunello, a member, colleague and great friend to our IPID group, this past week in Vicenza, Italy.

Paolo was a practitioner, educator and scholar in ICT4D. Based both at RHUL and at Università della Svizzera italiana  (USI, Lugano), Paolo was awarded his PhD in March 2015 from the Royal Holloway University of London. He was a real force in the ICT4D community, connecting many people across Europe, Africa, Asia and the US and facilitating key events and workshops at IPID Symposia and ICTD conferences. His PhD thesis is entitled ‘Broken Premises: Steps to an intercultural Understanding of ICT for Education. An Ethnographic Study of a Bilateral Cooperation Project in Burundi.’ I encourage you to read his thesis, and visit his website or YouTube channel.

Paolo was passionate about his work and shared what he had learned freely. Many of us will always remember his warm personality, passion for justice, thoughtfulness, and witty sense of humour. Paolo exuded a keen interest in living life to the fullest and yet struggled with mental health issues. As a community, we can be united in remembering Paolo, what we learned from him, and in wishing he has finally found the peace and fulfillment he was looking for.

If you would like to send your own message of condolences, memories and thought for Paolo, his family have created an email account to receive them:

Friends and family are in the process of selecting a foundation where donations can be made. If you would like more information about the associations they prefer, please contact

Our thoughts are with Paolo, his family and friends.
