Here at the Heriot-Watt University Debating Society we give our members many things. We give people a place to come together and discuss issues which affect individuals and the world around them. We also provide an environment within which people can improve their confidence, as well as many chances to travel to other universities for competitions all over the UK and Europe.
Our main activities are workshops, public debates and socials. Public debates give all students a chance to come together and hear both sides of issues which affect both the student body and the world around them. Workshops give members a chance to learn how to debate and to argue, thus helping improve many skills such as reasoning, analysis, public speaking and confidence. Socials = good time, banter, pub tours. We will also regularly send willing members to other universities to take part in Debating InterVarsity tournaments (Universities vs each other, called "IV" for short) and other competitions.
Being students we of course don't mind a drink or three. We do our best to give members numerous chances throughout the year to get to know each other better. The ultimate aim of this society is to make sure that our members enjoy themselves. If at the end of the day they accidentally learn something, then our bad.
