Howard League for Penal Reform Student Society (Bristol)

The Howard League for Penal Reform is the oldest penal reform charity in the UK. It was established in 1866 and is named after John Howard, one of the first prison reformers. Among its many achievements, the Howard League was one of the key campaigners for the abolition of capital punishment in the UK. We are the student society for the University of Bristol and we aim to raise awareness about the problems with the criminal justice system in the UK and to raise money for the charity.

The Howard League has three core aims/beliefs:
1. to create a safer society with fewer victims of crime 2. offenders should make amends for the wrongs they have caused and become reformed individuals. 3. community service is more likely to make people take responsibility for their actions than a prison sentence and has a better rate of reform.

As a student group we aim to raise awareness, fundraise for the charity and campaign. Of course we will also host lots of socials with plenty of alcohol!

Sponsored Prison Walk

Posted by Lucy Walker, Sunday 7th February 2010 @ 1:36pm

The Howard League Committee (and any lovely members that want to join us) will be walking 15 miles from Bristol to Eastwood Park Women's Prison in Gloucester to raise money for the Howard League. We strongly believe that penal reform will lead to a safer society and reduced crime.

Eastwood Park Prison has a self-harm rate of 2,290 incidents (year ending November 2008)- over 6 reported incidences a day. The sponsored walk comes nearly two months after Jack Straw visited the prison and concluded that 'we should punish and reform females in the community and not in prisons.' We are walking this distance to represent the hardship faced by women in prisons, and the urgency of the need for reform of the penal system.

Please take pity on our feet and show your support through sponsorship: http://www.justgiving.com/prison-walk

On behalf of the committee,

Thank you.

'Are we doing enough to tackle knife crime?'

Posted by Lucy Walker, Friday 27th November 2009 @ 12:09pm

This event promises an evening of heating debate and stimulating conversation, in a panel event with a difference. The Director of the Howard League, Francis Crook, the Student Journalist of the year, and a representative from STOP (knife crime charity) will be discussing whether the law and policies of the Government are doing enough to prevent knife crime, and what else can be done. This will be an interactive evening in a 'Question Time' style, so come prepared with questions to grill our panel.

For all those studying Law, Criminology, Psychology, Sociology, Social Policy, Politics, Humanities or anyone with an interest in current issues affecting our society - this event is for you.

National Day of Action

Posted by Lucy Walker, Tuesday 17th November 2009 @ 2:13pm

The UN General Assembly has designated this day as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It has also been marked by women's rights activists as a national day against violence since 1981.

This day is of particular significance to the Howard League because of our recent campaign against 'Lost Daughters', and this is your chance to get active and petition the government on the rights of women in prisons. We will have a stall in front of the Wills Memorial Building with a petition to implement the recommendations of the Corston Report of vulnerable women in the criminal justice system and prevent the deaths of any more women in prison.

We will be on the stall from approx. 10am - 3pm on Wednesday 25th November. On behalf of the committee I hope to see many of you there to show your support and sign our petition. All it takes is two minutes of your time and you could make a real difference in the lives of women in prison.

Introductory Talk and Social

Posted by Lucy Walker, Wednesday 7th October 2009 @ 11:35pm

When: Tuesday 13th October 6.30pm in the Old Council Chamber, Wills Memorial Building.

Our first Howard League event of the year is upon us! For those of you who want to know a bit more about the work of the Howard League or to officially join our student group, this event if for you! On Tuesday 13th October we have a speaker coming down from London to talk about the relevance of the Howard League's work and its current campaigns. Afterwards we have a social involving a bar crawl ending up in a club somewhere around the triangle (to be confirmed) with guestlist entry.

We will also be selling raffle tickets before announcing the results, so bring along money and any tickets bought at freshers and get involved. The prizes include a Howard League goody bag, a meal for two at Blue Juice and a drink and meal for two at Dragon Kiss, so it is well worth the two pound ticket price and obviously all money raised goes to the charity. Hopefully we will see you there!
