Alex de Waal is a prominent researcher, writer and activist on African issues. He is a fellow of the Global Equity Initiative, Harvard; director of the Social Science Research Council program on AIDS and social transformation; and a director of Justice Africa in London. His work has addressed the social, political and health dimensions of famine, war, genocide and the HIV/AIDS epidemic, especially in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes. Dr. de Waal received his DPhil in social anthropology from Oxford University in 1988 and has worked with Human Rights Watch, the Mines Advisory Group and the African Union Mediation team for the Darfur conflict. He is the author of Famine that Kills: Darfur, Sudan, 1984-5 (OUP, 1989), Facing Genocide: The Nuba of Sudan (African Rights, 1995) and Darfur: A New History of a Long War (Second Edition, Zed Books 2008). He is lead author and editor of Islam and Its Enemies in the Horn of Africa (Indiana, 2004), AIDS and Power: Why There is No Political Crisis Yet (Zed, 2006), and War in Darfur and the Search for Peace (Harvard UP, 2007).
