Oxford Gumboots Dance Troupe

Gumboot dancing originated in the gold mines of South Africa. The mines were often flooded so to protect their feet mine workers wore gumboots (rubber mining boots). At the end of their shift the mine workers, who came from all over southern Africa, would entertain themselves by slapping their boots and combined this with their traditional dances. Gumboot dancing was born.
