Food Justice came to be in 2010, and since then had dedicated itself to helping raise awareness regarding food waste, provide volunteers for local food charities, and help educate students on various food related issues.
We are committed to bringing at least one food related speaker event to Oxford every term. Past talks have included the likes of Tristram Stuart and Sean Rickard. We are also committed to advertising and hosting other food events, such as food waste dinners, ethical cooking workshops, etc. Check our calendar for upcoming events that you won’t want to miss!
Many of our members volunteer with Oxford Food Bank, who run a twice-daily collection and distribution of food from two Sainsbury's and a food distributor to charities in Oxford, such as the homeless centre The Gatehouse. With the help of our volunteers, they have been able to expand their operation, picking up over £4000 worth of food that would otherwise be wasted EVERY WEEK, and there is still potential for further growth as well! Check out their website at www.oxfordfoodbank.co.uk or email them at volunteers [at] oxfordfoodbank.org .
Volunteers help to collect, allocate and deliver the food to community charities, working together with a driver from the Oxford Food Bank.
We also work with the CEF (Community Emergency Food Bank) that provide food parcels to support individuals in crisis. Students help by doing food dives where they stand outside supermarkets and invite shoppers to buy specific goods. It's a wonderful opportunity for communicating with the public! You’re your eyes on our calendar for the next opportunity to get involved. http://www.cefoxford.co.uk/
Our committee that organizes campaigns, events, and researches food justice issues related to food waste, local food, the environment, nutrition, government policy, and access issues.
