Fish on Toast Members’ Contribution needed!
Dear Fish on Toasters,
Summer time is postgraduate dissertation time. And this year one of our FoT members has dedicated his summer project to discover “The Influence of Experience on Entrepreneurial Confidence”.
Entrepreneurs are said to be highly confident individuals, an attribute that enables them to start businesses where others wouldn’t. Although, or even because of this high confidence, less than 50% of UK start-ups survive the first five years of operation. As confidence is not a static condition, but is influenced by many underlying factors, a new study conducted by Sebastian Dittrich tries to find out if entrepreneurial confidence is related to entrepreneurial experience.
In order to do so, an online survey was published, for which as many responses as possible from all types of entrepreneurs, from nascent and novice to serial and portfolio entrepreneurs are needed.
So if you have or are planning to found, inherit, develop a venture or consider yourself an entrepreneur of some sort or another, this survey is for you!
The survey can be found at: http://bit.ly/aHMvI7. The survey takes between 10-15 minutes to complete. The survey will be available online until Monday, 16/08/2010, 9.00 am, so please participate before then!
Please take this time to help this research become as insightful as possible, so it will be able to shed new light on entrepreneurial education and policy.
Thank you.

I hope your revision and exams are going well!
Just wanted to send you a quick e-mail about an opportunity sent to us by NACUE - The National Consortium of University Entrepreneurs.

Could you work with us to help the world to work better and smarter?
We are looking for smart entrepreneurs, with businesses less than 3 years old, to help us build a smarter planet. If that sounds like you, then SmartCamp London, 21 July could be the most inspiring event to be involved in this Summer.

The winner will take part in a three-month mentorship with IBM where we can assist with everything from technical support to defining your broader business vision. They will also have the opportunity to attend the international SmartCamp finals in Dublin, 15 November, where one business will be named “The World’s Smartest Start-up”.Our SmartCamp partners include Amazon Web Services who are offering $500 credit on IBM software for development and production on the cloud via the "pay-as-you-go" model. We are also partnering with Imperial College London where the event will take place and with Seedcamp.
You will need to register for SmartCamp and submit your entry no later than 2 July, 2010. Semi-finalists will be invited to meet with IBM week commencing 5 July at IBM South Bank, London. Just thought I'd send you a quick update on what Fish On Toast are working on at the moment!
Our main aims currently are to secure top quality speakers for next year as well as sponsors useful to our members. We're also working on bringing a variety of different events to Southampton over the next year such as Doug Richard's School for Startups and the Business Boffins' How To Start a Business Workshop. As well as our usual speaker based events we also want to host even more business competitions such as a university Apprentice challenge, university Dragon's Den and a university wide £100 for 100 words!
As well as doing all this we want to help promote student businesses, by creating a whole incubation process from an idea to a fully fledged business. In order to do this we are working with other entrepreneurs societies such as Oxford, Reading and Surrey as well as targeting selected sponsors that can be helpful to you such as web design agencies, accountants and lawyers.
We want to set this whole process setup to help those of you that are running or want to start running your own business, so we want to hear from you! Send us details of your business and we'll feature you in an e-mail (just like this one) to all our members!
The first featured business, Yoo-Call, is below.

They have donated their money and time for us to run some fantastic events and competitions this year. 100 T-shirts, 140 pizzas, 75 cookies and 100 bottles of water weren't free you know! Most of all they have facilitated epic expansion of our membership, and our reputation on campus. Thank you.
Second, our guest speakers. Every one of you donated your time and expertise for the benefit of all the Fish on Toast members. Loads of lessons were learned and get contacts and connections made. Thank you.
Third, the committee who gave up huge amounts of their time for free to make Fish on Toast a success from the Bunfight all the way through to the AGM.
Fourth, the staff members who have helped us this year (There are loads more who we can't fit here) particularly;
Helena Schulze - Student Enterprise Officer, offering fantastic council, funding and great ideas;
Janice Rippon - Head of Student Services, who made entrepreneurship a real concept for the careers service; and Debra Humphris - Pro-Vice Chancellor, who has promoted Fish on Toast and SIFE to the upper echelons of the university management.
Finally to the members that make Fish on Toast what it is. You are inspiring, exciting and intelligent people and I know that I've met individuals who will change the world for the better.
It's been a great year and I've really enjoyed it - I hope you did too!
