Do Business Analysts Make Good Management Consultants?
This short article is just a controversial topic today on whether business analysts Singapore quality glass make good management consultants. It might be considered controversial since there does not exist a perfect reply to the question.
How work analysts and management consultants differ?
While there is no perfect definition of a difference between the two roles, it is essential for us to realize that roles and jobs don't necessarily run by definitions. Both, business analysts and management consultants work towards solving a small business problem for the client with a certain aim in mind.
Personally I don't believe there is an obvious distinction between the two roles. As a consultant I have in the past performed requirement planning, gathering and documentation (some of the core functions of business analysts) but have also labored on project management, change management, stake holder meetings beyond requirements gathering, building assets, performing GAP analysis etc. So basically, I will be placed ranging from a small business analyst or a task manager icon
Do business analysts make good management consultants?
In the strict context of a part definition, a BA deals more frequently with IT in one of the ways or the other. Consultants on one other hands, Personally i think could potentially take a low IT related area of consulting too. This though disputable could potentially be looked at as an area of difference between the two roles.
Again before we jump to fire the gun, I would like to observe that this is not always the case. I understand that my consulting experience involves solving client issues with the utilization of technology and IT. In accordance with CBAP handbook, experience in these areas wouldn't be looked at for CBAP experience criteria.
- Creating Project Plans and Identifying project risks, Weekly project status reporting, leading design workshops, creating project charter or system architecture, testing execution etc.
Personally, I believe sucks. I do believe learning beyond the role is a fantastic tool for career success. But I suppose CBAP excludes these work experience for grounds justified from their end. One major reason might be to differentiate the CBAP certification from PMP certification or some other certifications.
Fortunately, industry and firms are usually on the design out for those who can extend beyond their role. We all know in life the roles of business analysts or consultants are never restrictive. At the very least I haven't seen a firm that will say NO whenever a BA wishes to use up more project management responsibility
So work analysts make good management consultants then?
I my opinion, BA's make exceptional consultants. Using areas, BA's could need to extend beyond their role to guide areas not covered beneath the scope of business analysts such as business processes or project management, change management etc. But I believe that's the secret for a good consultant. If you seek to be a superb consultant, starting as a BA might be your first step to success.
So while from a natural context perspective BA's and Consultants may differ, Personally i think in reality we are exactly the same in plenty of areas sharing our responsibilities. While management consultants could range between strategy, process, operations or other functional regions of consulting, business analysts may be restricting their area of ability when they desire to strictly proceed per the handbook guidelines.
Let's keep in mind - CMC or CBAP, certifications are merely credentials which can be enablers. Actuality experience might be quite different. So keeping an open mind would certainly help.
