This past weekend we held our third annual public speaking competition and it was bigger and better than ever. We held two rounds of semi-finals, from which six students were selected to compete in our final on Saturday afternoon. At the final, each student delivered a prepared five-minute address on the theme "The Wisdom of Youth".
The winner of the event was Sigríður María Egilsdóttir of Verslunarskóli Íslands. She will travel to London in May to represent Iceland at the international competition. The runner-up was Sigurgeir Ólafsson of Menntaskólinn á Akureyri.
We were very fortunate to have British author and presenter Sandi Toksvig as one of our judges at the final, along with MP Árni Þór Sigurðsson and professor Alyson Bailes. Sandi was in Iceland preparing an episode of BBC Radio 4's travel programme Excess Baggage, to be broadcast at the end of March.
All finalists were presented with a framed photograph from CCP Games and a book from either the Indian or American embassy. Sigríður will travel to London in May courtesy of Icelandair.
For the third year in a row, newsreader Bogi Ágústsson was our able moderator for the final and the second semi-final. There was also a news item on RÚV, which you can see here at about the 16 minute mark: http://www.ruv.is/sarpurinn/frettir/18022012-6
Thank you also to all the teachers who assisted as judges and moderators and helped to organize the whole event.
We look forward to seeing many of you at next year's competition!
