About this group

The English-Speaking Union is an international charity founded in 1918 to promote international understanding and friendship through the use of the English language. It is an independent, non-political, and educational charity with members in over 50 countries. Its purpose is to create global understanding through English at a time when English is positioned as the increasingly shared language of an interdependent world.

The ESU works through people-to-people exchanges, scholarships, debating and public speaking activities, conferences, seminars and national and international programmes made possible by the generosity, interest and expertise of its members worldwide.

ESU Iceland’s mission is to uphold the objectives of the global ESU, specifically by hosting and promoting lectures and seminars in English. ESU Iceland will also sponsor Icelandic students of English to attend international debating and public speaking competitions.

Anyone can join ESU Iceland.

Most of our speaker events are free of charge and open to all. However, for an annual fee of ISK 4000 (2500 for students), you receive a number of great benefits both in Iceland and the UK. See the page "ESU Membership" for further information about all the reasons to join as a member and then click "Join Group" to join us a full member.

National Public Speaking Competition

Posted by Sigurdur Darri Skulason, Wednesday, 23rd March 2011 @ 10:39pm

  • In 2010, we took part in the IPSC for the first time, sending two participants to London. This year we held our National Public Speaking Competition on the 19th of February. The venue was the new auspicious premises of the University of Reykjavík and we had much higher participation. The adjudicators, who were drawn from the Ministry of Education, the British Council and ESU Iceland, were very pleased with the high standard of the speeches delivered. A fourth-year (graduating) student and a second-year student will represent Iceland in London in May.
