We are the group for fans of the BBC TV series Doctor Who. Past and present students meet up once or twice a week to enjoy all things Whovian. We regularly watch episodes from throughout the show's history, organise the termly geek quiz, and end up in the pub quite frequently. All are welcome!
If you would like a printed termcard, send me an email and one will fly to you as fast as the pigeon post can carry it.
News & Announcements
Posted by Emma Lewis, Sunday 17th January 2010 @ 4:26pm A celebration of everyone's favourite potato-headed aliens, we take a look at two very different treatments of a recurring alien race.
~The Sontaran Experiment:
A Tom Baker two-parter (from back where the episodes were twenty minutes long!), featuring a Sontaran who is carrying out gruesome experiments on the people of Earth. The Doctor, Sarah Jane and Harry spend a surprising amount of time falling down holes and/or getting tortured in the name of science.
~The Poison Sky / The Sontaran Stratagem:
A David Tennant two-parter, showcasing Russell T Davies' obsession with the malevolent possibilities of Modern Technology, UNIT, and *two Marthas*. According to one interview, Catherine Tate (Donna) spent two weeks filming these episodes before she realised that there were people inside the Sontaran costumes! Posted by Adam Povey, Monday 19th January 2009 @ 6:43pm A night to celebrate those Doctor Who stories that might not be cannon, but wouldn't we love it if they were (this does not include Dimensions in Time). Shows likely putting in an appearance are the webcast Scream of the Shalka, starring Richard E. Grant in glorious flash animation, Real Time, featuring Colin Baker and Cybermen with pretty pictures, and The Curse of Fatal Death, a Comic Relief special from days of yore with, among others, Rowan Atkinson as the Doctor and Jonathan Price as the Master.
Posted by Adam Povey, Monday 19th January 2009 @ 6:38pm In keeping with the President's insitence the society not repeat a country's cuisine during his tenure, we attend the reportedly fantastic Slovakian restaurant Moya on St. Clement's. Anyone interested in attending, please contact the address below before 5pm March 3rd so a table can be booked to the correct dimensions. Posted by Adam Povey, Monday 19th January 2009 @ 6:35pm Come watch a classic Tom Baker/Leela serial decribed by Wikipedia as "The cursed island of Fang Rock is a place of rumour and tales of beasts from the sea. Three lighthouse men face their fears when something comes in from the sea which brings death to all it touches." Posted by Adam Povey, Monday 19th January 2009 @ 6:33pm We invite all with an interest in the geeky and fanatical to decend on St. John's North Lecture Room for an evening of pub-quiz style questioning. Attendees form themselves into groups (often based on other university societies) and answer rounds of question brought in by anyone else.
