Cambridge University International Development (CUiD)

CUiD is a student-run society whose mission is to provide a non-partisan platform to raise awareness on international development issues and to promote the open discussion of them.

We aim to motivate students to discuss, debate and take action on issues in international development, such as poverty, global health, climate change, and education - to name just a few. We do this by organising speaker events, panel debates and discussion fora that stimulate dialogue between students, academics and development professionals from developed and developing countries, and that encourage students to question assumptions and opinions.

Our termly magazine, Vision, provides another platform on which students can explore issues that interest them and voice their views, as does the Cambridge chapter of the U8, through its events and its research projects.

CUiD was set up in 2005 by Sheena Sumaria. We are a member of the Humanitarian Centre and the Cambridge Hub, and are also a founding member of the U8 Global Student Partnership for Development.

Open Debate with Manpreet Singh - "Current Affairs: War in the Developing World"

Posted by Kelly, Sunday 22nd February 2009 @ 9:51am

Should France be prosecuted for its role in the Rwandan genocide?

In the last of this term's series of CUID open debates, we'll be looking at the factors leading up to the Rwandan genocide, and what role France played in the genocide. We'll then take a broader look at the role the international community plays in war situations in the developing world.

CUiD open debates are informal discussion groups which meet every other Thursday at the Cafe Project on Jesus Lane to talk about development issues. All are welcome, and participants are encouraged to share their views with the rest of the group. No prior knowledge required!

This term, our open debates are led by Manpreet Singh, a 5th year medical student at Cambridge. He spent his third year at MIT researching appropriate technologies for the developing world. While there, he was part of a team that won a World Bank grant to work on the links between indoor air pollution, fuel use, and respiratory infections. He was one of the student organisers of the International Development Design Summit in 2007 and 2008.
