The Cambridge University Environmental Consulting Society (CUECS) is a student voluntary organisation with a membership of over 800 undergraduates and graduates. Managed by a committee of around 15 individuals, we also have numerous internal contacts within the university and the town. Our goal is to have to provide solutions to environmental problems by helping organisations and individuals (primarily within Cambridge) to alter their practices in cost efficient and environmentally responsible ways. This is achieved through society projects, such as the Green League Table (GLT), which is a long established and well respected annual project that ranks colleges according to their environmental credentials, based on statistical analysis of their energy use, water consumption, and recycling. Another project, the College Ball Sustainability Project (CBSP) offers advice to college ball committees on how to make their events greener, as well as managing the waste produced by such events through recycling teams. Other projects include the Carbon Calculator, ecology workshops at local schools, and energy conservation audits of university estate property using the society's thermal imaging camera. CUECS is the only university society that offers actual consulting services, and we are working to make such services increasingly professional and wide ranging in the near future.
A new ecological conservation group will be formed at the next CUECS meeting on Monday 7th at 7.15pm in the Engineering Department. Come along to discuss how ecology fits into environmental consulting, and what we can do as a student consulting society to bring the biological side to CUECS!
