Cambridge Stop AIDS Society

HIV and AIDS is one of the most devastating crises of our generation. 40 million people are already HIV positive, and that number grows by one every 10 seconds. We believe we cannot stand by and watch people die, watch children being orphaned, societies being devastated and economies crumble.

Our aim is to campaign, raise awareness and fundraise to help those infected or affected by HIV throughout the world. We have teamed up with other local groups, both university and Cambridgeshire based. Although set up initially by university students, we do not want the society to be the preserve of the university, and welcome anyone from the university or from the wider Cambridge community.

We are part of a national coalition of Student Stop AIDS Societies, which are coordinated by SPW. This is part of the national Stop AIDS Campaign.

Posted by Jessica Waldman, Tuesday 4th May 2010 @ 6:59pm

Student Partnership worldwide needs a Steering Rep for the Home Counties region, which includes Reading, Oxford and Cambridge. The role of the steering committee rep for the region is to stay in regular contact with the presidents from each of the universities and provide support where needed to them and help lead the stop aids campaign as a whole with us at meetings in London quarterly, which we will pay for. It is a really exciting position which will lead you to be in meetings with organisations such as Unicef, Oxfam and Christian aid, and an important addition to a CV. SPW pay all travel expenses!

The Stop AIDS Campaign has created a new animation which sets out why the
world desperately needs an HIV patent pool: The 'Push for the Pool'
campaign needs your support today.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vj0dbFgjoh4

It explains what a patent pool is and how it could make a huge difference
to the lives of millions of people living with HIV in developing countries.

Please take a few minutes to watch the animation, sign the Push for the
Pool petition (at www.stopaidscampaign.org.uk) and forward it to all your
friends!

"Care and Love" film screening

Posted by a GroupSpaces user, Tuesday 13th January 2009 @ 11:44am

The Cambridge Stop AIDS Society and Chinese Salon discussion group are holding a joint film screening of "Care and Love" (2007), which tells the story of Liu Xianhong, a Chinese villager who contracted HIV through a blood transfusion during childbirth. Lack of regulation in Chinese blood transfusion practise has leaded to mass HIV infection, and some estimate that the number of people infected this way to be as high as 1,000,000. The film recounts how Liu Xianhong publicized her story, filed a lawsuit with her 8-year-old son against the hospital, and eventually received compensation. The bitter experiences of several families, and the collective effort by people living with HIV to defend their rights, resulted in the "Care and Love Group".

The screening will take place on March 2nd in the Graduate Union (Mill Lane) at 7pm
Entry is free, but donations to the Care and Love Group welcome.
