R8 million on the nine-metre high statue of Madiba

JOHANNESBURG – The Department of Arts and Culture on Thursday revealed plans to erect a statue of former president Nelson Mandela at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

Minister Paul Mashatile says President Jacob Zuma will unveil the statue on 16 December.

He was speaking at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Houghton on Thursday.

Mashatile says the ministry spent R8 million on the nine-metre high statue.

He says statues that already exist at the Union Buildings will probably have to be moved around to accommodate the Madiba tribute, which will likely be placed in the centre of the heritage site.

Artist Andre Prinsloo, who has promised to complete the sculpture by November, says his team decided on an open-arm pose to promote transparency and peace in South Africa.
