British Bats

The Bat Conservation Trust has an excellent page on British Bat Species, of which there are 17 which are known to breed in the UK. Click HERE to link to their page. You can also listen to heterodyne detector recordings of each species.

To date in Worcestershire we have recorded 14 species

Common Pipistrelle
Soprano Pipistrelle
Nathusius Pipistrelle
Brown Long Eared
Noctule
Leisler's
Serotine
Daubentons
Natterer's
Whiskered
Brandt's
Bechstein's
Barbastelle
Lesser Horseshoe

The three remaining UK species that have not so far been recorded in Worcestershire are...

Greater Horseshoe – There occur in Gloucestershire and Herefordshire, so we are hopeful of one day finding one in the county!

Grey Long Eared - This bat is found only in Southern Britain (Devon and Dorset), however a colony has recently been found in south Wales.

Alcathoe - This species is remarkably similar to the Whiskered and Brandt's bat, and it's likely that it is resident in the county, but it has yet to be positively identified.  It's hopefully just a matter of time before this is added to our Worcestershire list!
