This event is in the past.
Run The Rye - Standing Up For Southwark has been developed as a community event run by groups who all have a desire to see some balance restored to the way people view the young people of the area.
Run the Rye as a concept was put together after consultation with local young people. Teams of fun runners (of all ages) will be recruited to run continuously around a route mapped out on Peckham Rye Common for an hour with other groups. The run will be managed as a relay - every hour for eight hours - so that the community is seen to be “running for peace” as a mark of unification against youth violence.
Whilst the fun run is taking place there will be a stage with guest performers and key speakers. The performers will come from positive groups including local youth groups, the South London Press local heroes and The Spirit of London Awards.
One of the main objectives is to create an event that is owned by the young people of the area who want to see the area talked about for the right reasons and if successful will take place every year hereafter. The key objectives are to:
- Bring the local community together
- Show solidarity with the local police “Stand up for Southwark campaign”
- Drive positive stories through the media collaboration
- Develop a sustainable relationship between the participating groups – Run the Rye 2012 etc.
- Have the community speak as one voice against youth violence
The event will be taking place on Saturday 17th September 2011, 10am until 6pm at Peckham Rye Park. We are looking for positive people of all ages to take part in the fun run for an hour. If you have your own group (15-25 runners) please let us know the name of your organisation. Over 18's can also be involved by volunteering as a Steward on the day. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to participate as either a fun runner or a Steward.
