Firstly, apologies for not getting in a report for the Nth Island schools Champs earlier this month. North Island Schools Champs
Wellington riders produced a solid performance over the first two days on the road with what must be one of our most successful Champs to date:
Riders who podiumed at the champs were: Oscar Goodwin U13, Raumati Beach school – Bronze medal in the Road Race; Millie Donald U13, Kena Kena School – Bronze medal in the Criterium; Freddie Dosser U17, Scots College – Bronze medal in the Criterium; and Boston Bright U20, Scots College – Silver medal in the Criterium. Also there were numerous excellent performances by newer riders from Wellington: First time racers Alex Foden, Raroa Intermediate finishing in the top half of the U15 road race and Aidan Danusantoso, from Scots finished in the top 10 in the U13s. Meanwhile James de Hair finishing just out of top 10 and more seasoned rider, Elliot Robertson comes in 5th place in the U15 Boys criterium. So cool to see our up-and-coming riders performing so well. The third day of racing at the Avantidrome certainly showed we had tired legs and lacked the time on an indoor track. However Zoe Perry WEGC and Bridget Olphert, QMC put on a good show in their events and many of our riders were well in the points during the points races.
Anyone keen to get more track time on an indoor velodrome can attend the National Schools Track Cycling Champs at the Invercargill Velodrome in October.
Criterium Series: The annual criterium series, held in Trentham has now been going since 2007. This year we will see the series move onto a new road circuit not used for about 15years. This circuit should prove to have exciting racing once again on open roads. The Race Manager is on the lookout for Marshalls to help with the safety of this event. Please contact Aaron Stagg to offer your help: firstname.lastname@example.org
The final event on the local calendar will be the Wgtn Champs in mid September. Due to unforeseen changes, we will have to change from the long-held 3-event Championships. This year we will have an Ind Time Trial, followed by a Criterium event, all held on the same circuit as the previous series.
Next season there is a planned, separate Hill Climb Champs to make up for not having one in Setember.

Firstly, apologies for not getting this newsletter out earlier. There has been some problems with the support of the Groupspaces website, however this has now been rectified for the season. However, we may be looking at transferring this website over to the Schools page on the PNP Website for next year. Anyone keen on looking into making this possible, please take a look at the two sites and let Gary know if you can help.
We’re now well into the schools cycling calendar with two TTT’s under our belt. After the Hope Gibbons there are two more TTT’s held on the Wainuiomata Coast Rd. Scots College riders George Tompkin, Harry Stew and Elliot Robertson broke the U16 record for this course recently (was held by a strong team with Boston Bright & Louis Hodgkinson in it) which shows we have some young talent coming through the ranks.
Full results of the TTt's are on the events page under the appropriate event. The next TTT is only a few weeks away, so time to start preparing your teams. Please have your entry in on the Friday before the TTT.
New Recruits: Hats off to Henry Tompkin & Freddie Dossor for their work in getting new recruits into the Scots Cycling Team. They have 10 new riders, mostly in the Year 7/8 age and have been coaching them up in their skills over the last few months. They’ve now completed a Pedal Ready course on the road and have started their own morning bunch rides. We look forward to seeing them at the schools cycling events soon.
CNZ Coaching Course: quite a few people have put their names down for the CyclingNZ coaching course to be held at Scots College over next weekend. The course runs from Friday evening through to Sunday afternoon, which is quite a commitment. Thank you to all participating as it goes a long way to helping Schools Cycling. May you all bring everything that you learn back into cycling to make the sport stronger.
Entries are now open for the North Island Schools Road & Track Champs. This is three days of excellent racing over the first weekend of the upcoming school holidays. Held in Cambridge, the 3rd day is at the Avantidrome.
please get your entries in as soon as possible: https://schools.cyclingnewzealand.nz/events
Track bikes are available for use from the Track Shed if needed. Wgtn Schools will all be together at the drome with a Manager and mechanic to help you. Please see Francis de Hair (Team Manager) to let him know you will be there.
Junior Bunch Rides: riders from 10yrs of age + are welcome to join us on the group rides, Sunday mornings 8.30am at the Windwand, Evans Bay Marina Carpark. Rides are not cancelled, but transferred to indoor training if bad weather. Contact Gary for more information: email@example.com
Nutrition: while on those longer rides it's essential to keep your energy up with food. Why not make your own energy bars, save a little money & know what's in the ingredients? Better still, put the bars in your own wax-paper wrapper too. Here's a great recipe from Liz Tomlinson that some riders are using now: Chocolate Chip Granola Barslr.pdf
